This book is awesome! It is 100% excellent! I’m glad I read it. The stories are all very good. I flew through this book like Superman. I’m going to read the next book in the series.
This was such a unique, memorable collection of chilling stories. I have never read anything by any of the authors included, but this collection has definitely made me want to explore them some more. I gelled with some of the stories more than others, mostly the standalone ones. There are some real hidden gems in this collection!
I chose this book as a background read for me. One that I could pick up between books and read a couple stories from over the past month or so. It started out that way, but they got so good that I just could not stop.
Out of the 15 stories in this collection, my top 3 were probably: Grotesque, Dingo the Clown, and Deadr. All of which are by the same author, Ian Fortey. While all of the stories in this collection were good in their own ways, these 3 were stand out for me. Chilling, imaginative, while still having the bones of classic horror that I love. These 3 stories all got 5 stars from me, though they were not the only ones by far. Below is a breakdown of all the stories and my ratings:
1. Stakeout on Mortuary Row (From the case files of Max Mooney P.I.) by Simon Cluett - 4* 2. Steady Burn by A.I. Nasser - 4* 3. One Way Down by Ian Fortey - 4.75* 4. Terror at the Blue Anubis (From the case files of Max Mooney P.I.) by Simon Cluett - 3* 5. In a Dark Window by Ian Fortey - 4.75* 6. Sparky by David Longhorn - 5* 7. Grotesque by Ian Fortey - 5*! 8. Massacre at Shadow Cross (From the case files of Max Mooney P.I.) by Simon Cluett - 4.5* 9. Dingo the Clown by Ian Fortey - 5*! 10. Trail of the Blood Scorpion (From the case files of Max Mooney P.I.) by Simon Cluett - 3* 11. Red Devil Bend by Ian Fortey - 4.75* 12. Old Growth by David Longhorn - 5* 13. Deadr by Ian Fortey - 5*! 14. Toop by Jon Barron - 5* 15. Short Stories by Ron Ripley - 5*
It is nice to see a new collection of short stories from Scare Street. They are always well written and deliciously frightening. This collection is no exception. I especially enjoyed meeting Max Mooney, P. I. He is a fun character. I think he'd make a perfect part time partner for Shane Ryan. Speaking of whom, Shane shows up in one of the stories as well. This is frosting on an already sweet cake. Seeing as how this is Book 1, there will be more of these wonderful tales. I, for one, can't wait.
An enticingly scary cover enwraps a new collection of frightening and thought-provoking tales. 15 stories from 6 accomplished Scare Street authors will waken your imagination and render your nights sleepless. A great sampler to introduce new readers to the imaginative wonders of the Scare Street universe, and a welcome addition to the lore for long-term readers.
