Prologue: It has been thirteen years that peace has reigned throughout the continent of Bruen. It has been even longer since Ariella Stormrage last laid eyes on the capital city of Sheathelm. Raised by the renowned dwarven privateer, Red Beard, this human female has returned to the eastern waters in search of the lost fortune of her adoptive father. An attempted mutiny claimed Red Beard's life just over a year ago, and now Ariella captains the Red Dawn, a ship that she has lived her entire life aboard.
The timing of her return could not be more unfortunate as several ships have gone missing recently in the area. The king of Sheathelm—a human by the name of Arioch Ravenguard—has charged his friend and most trusted adviser, an elf by the name of Chance Na'Moon, to look into the matter. A hero of the Dragon War and the Second Orcnea War, Chance is about to set forth on an adventure where he will confront his past, find new allies in the present, all while setting in motion events that will affect Runefell's future.
As long as I can remember I have always been a daydreamer. In fourth grade it became more of a distraction than normal. My grades were marginal, and at the end of the year I was informed that if I were to continue on to the fifth grade I may find it too difficult. Ultimately, my parents and the school left the choice up to me. While it was a hard decision, it was not one that I regret. I repeated the fourth grade with my best friend at the time who was also struggling. One silver lining was that I was going to be able to hear my teacher, Mr. Sheathelm, read from The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis for a second time. Out of all of books that he read The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was my favorite. Despite having to repeat the grade, Mr. Sheathelm became my favorite teacher. My short attention span and daydreaming didn't end there. To this day, I often find myself thinking of places within my imagination. I have even wondered if I spend more time daydreaming than thinking about reality.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book, however I was completely blown away with the world that came to life on the pages. I am a huge fantasy nerd and this book hit every beat I could have wanted. It had adventure, thrills, humor and well written characters that I legitimately enjoyed reading. If you like fantasy, adventure and a fun story that pulls you in, this is a great book to check out.
The DND world has come alive and with it a good story that has both great female and male heroes. So no matter who are you plenty of great characters to choose from for a favorite. Looking forward to the next book.
This book did a great job of keeping me reading. The action was fast-paced. The characters were interesting. I do not read many fantasy books, but I enjoyed this one. I imagine fans of fantasy will find even more to like.
