The war devil is mother, literally. (But all jokes aside, this was a depressing volume with Denji saying that he will just find a new family if everyone around him happens to die again. Poor boy.)
I surprisingly enjoyed this volume a lot. It felt a lot more like the first half of the series; the pacing was great, we got to see a lot of Asa and the war devil, so that's always a win. I still feel a bit like I've missed five chapters somewhere because things will happen out of nowhere and just aren't acknowledged much. I'm hoping that this improves in the coming volumes, as it's been a bit rough for me the past 3-4 volumes, but I love the beginning of this series so much.
DENJI. MY POOR BOY. IT WILL GET BETTER TRUST ME (this shit is so fucking gas tho. a little confused! sure! but i....) ITS COOL THO. all the devils in this volume.... goD DAMN
Gun statue of Liberty?? Are you kidding???? Just when I think this series is as cool as it can get, Fujimoto takes another hit of his blunt and says "you know what else would be sick?"
basing my review on the idea that chapters 176 - 186 will become this volume.
this volume was insane. it follows fujimoto's frustrating pattern of making denji struggle with heartbreaking deaths and lots of unwanted sexual advances & thoughts and then trying to turn it into character development somehow. poor denji and asa were going through hell in this volume. i still hold out hope for asaden after them cooperating, but first i'll have to see how they beat the aging devil. i love how crazy that whole forest setting is. i did like some of the emotional depth like denji reflecting on what he wants, getting that one painful flashback, him regaining his positive mindset and him coming up with a genius plan. i also loved the fights in the middle of the volume!! the art was really cool there, even tho it was frustrating to wait two weeks for a minute worth of dialogueless reading sometimes. it has made me stop reading it for a few months, so i could let the fight marinate. i'm thrilled to catch up now though.
here are my thoughts from chapter 172 (when that one fight started) to illustrate how happy i was with the change in vibes: PEAK. WE ARE SO BACK. BADASS FIGHT PANELS, COOL BLACK BACKGROUND PANEL & A CRAZY ENDING.
Once again getting smacked with beautiful panels of symbolism. Peak action and character introductions. I absolutely adore how gutting Fujimoto’s use of femininity, motherhood, sacrifice, and control is
