We're talking cute, but with a Calvin and Hobbes-ian twist." --Mike Wilson, features editor, St. Petersburg Times
In the spirit of Snoopy and Charlie Brown, or Calvin and Hobbes, please welcome Sophie and Doug.
Dog Eat Doug is the cartooning creation of Brian Anderson that follows the daily exploits of Sophie, a cheese-loving chocolate Lab with a nose for the nuances of sarcasm and irony, and baby Doug, a healthy, happy newborn with no concept of jealousy and a limitless curiosity.
Together, this dynamic duo adjusts to sharing the spotlight, the toys, and the affections of Mom and Dad, while exploring nature and its majesty, the couch and its cushions, and the cookie jar and its contents.
Brian Anderson is the creator of the upcoming graphic novels and animated series “Sophie”, based on his syndicated comic, “Dog eat Doug”.
He is also the author of The Conjurers trilogy (Rise of the Shadow, Hunt for the Lost, and Fight of the Fallen) as well as the picture books Nighty Night, Sleepy Sleeps; The Prince’s New Pet; and Monster Chefs. He lives in North Carolina with his family, which includes a herd of rescued dogs and cats.
This is an amusing comic strip about Sophie the dog and Doug the baby. It's primarily told from the dog's viewpoint, for a slightly different perspective than normal. It's decent art, minimalist in art and context in comparison to Calvin & Hobbes, yet effective for what it is. There are some geek references and touching moments. I'd read more from this artist.
It Came from the Diaper Pail (Dog Eat Doug #2) by Brian Anderson is another funny collection of Doug and Sophie. They remind me of a younger version of Calvin and Hobbes. I get a giggle out of them and their antics. Some of them are sooo true they are funny. Great book.
A bit odd reviewing my own book. So instead, a little info on its creation. The most frequent question I get is "When is another Dog eat Doug collection coming out?". Well, now. When you want something done you do it yourself. After years of trying to get more collections put together through the usual channels, I decided to buck up and get it done on my own.
Page after page of laugh out loud fun. I've been reading about Doug and Sophie for a while and just love their adventures. This is a good read for all ages.
What a cute collection of comics. I found IT CAME FROM THE DIAPER PAIL through either a Kobo email or BookBub and I think it was free. I’m all for comics so I scooped it up and ended up reading it on a train traveling from Philadelphia to New York City.
I love the way they’re drawn and the adorable hijinks the characters get into. Sophie is a cross between Garfield and Hobbes, leaning more toward Hobbes on the lovable side, but still with a hint of Garfield cynicism. Doug doesn’t say a whole lot, but he and Sophie have their own language and communicate just fine.
There isn’t a story here; just a collection of comic strips a la Calvin and Hobbes or Garfield (can you tell what I used to read as a kid/still read???). If you’re looking for cute, quirky, fun, and greatly drawn, IT CAME FROM THE DIAPER PAIL will give you an hour or two of entertainment. For sure.
It is similar in some ways to Calvin/Hobbes, but a more gentle/sweet humor. Calvin was a little kid & Doug is a baby, so their interactions with the world are way different, & Sophie is more innocent than Hobbes, possibly because she is only a puppy. It was enjoyable.
Anyone enjoying Calvin and Hobbes, Family Circle, Dennis the Menace just has to have this book --- it’s a chuckling fun laugh your heart out book, …as only a baby and a puppy could see the World! Makes me smile every time I think of them!
What a cute comic strip! Sophie the dog and Doug the baby have so much fun playing together! Every season brings something new and thrilling to their lives. Great family fun for everyone! I highly recommend Dog Eat Doug!
I have loved Dog Eat Doug for years. Sophie is cute, adventurous, mischievous, and though she will never admit it, loves little Doug. Who else would help her with her schemes?
Hilarious comics about a puppy and a baby! Love the cartoon images! Some of the text was a little hard to read, but the pictures just scream. A fun read!
I think this is a great book. I totally recommend it to young and adventurous readers. Especially the way they created this book. The comics are amazing and well drawn. And I love the plot of the book. Another great book for people interested in this book is Calvin and Hobbes. Amazing book. I truly love it.
I love Calvin and Hobbes. I did not love Doug and Sophie. Maybe if the expectation of it to be as funny as C&H wasn't so high, I could have appreciated it more. While cute, this failed to be as clever, funny, or sharp-witted as the boy and his tiger.
Got this for free through Amazon.com. If you were like I was and grew up reading Calvin and Hobbes (and miss them terribly), this collection may fill the boy and tiger sized hole. I didn't think it was quite as funny, but it does have the same vibe.
