Broken Devotion Book Two in the Vows of Power Series
Nia Payton thought working for the Leary family was her way out of the orphanage and into freedom. Instead, she found herself trapped in a world of power, secrets, and dangerous men who played by their own ruthless rules.
Drawn to Stephan Leary—the cold, arrogant middle son with eyes as sharp as his words—Nia’s obsession only grows with every stolen glance and cruel dismissal. But when a single reckless night shatters the fragile boundary between them, their lives spiral into a storm of passion, jealousy, and control.
Stephan doesn’t want her. At least, that’s what he tells himself. Yet he can’t stand the thought of her belonging to anyone else. His devotion is twisted, his love brutal, and his desire for Nia comes at a cost she never imagined.
Caught between loyalty to the family she serves and the forbidden bond she craves, Nia must decide if her heart can survive Stephan’s merciless grip—or if her devotion will destroy them both.
THIS BOOK IS RECOMMENDED FOR READERS AGED 18 YEARS AND OVER. IT CONTAINS SEX AND SUBMISSION.
I was thrilled to see that E.L. Beth released a new book!
We’re now diving into Part 2 of The Vows of Power series, and just like I guessed, the focus shifts to Nia and Stephan’s story. I’ll be honest—I did not like him one bit. Normally, her male leads eventually soften or show redeeming qualities, but Stephan? He only had maybe two or three fleeting moments where he wasn’t a complete jerk, and even those moments only lasted for half a second. For the rest of the book, he treated Nia horribly. It felt like she couldn’t catch a single break. His words cut deep, and his actions were even worse.
Nia is truly an unlikable female lead, like she seriously got on my nerves. You’ll see what I mean if and when you read this one. She’s young and naive and at first I could feel Stephan’s frustration and annoyance with her, but as the story goes on, she does grow and realize her crush since 16 has cost her in the worst possible way.
Broken Devotion is unapologetically dark, violent, and merciless. The brutality in both the writing and the storyline is intense, and Stephan is one of the harshest MCs I’ve ever read from Beth. I actually found myself hurting for Nia. If you’re looking for something twisted, raw, and not afraid to push boundaries (Dark & extremely VIOLENT), this one absolutely delivers.
This one was a miss for me, which is tough to admit because E.L. Beth is one of my favorite authors. I usually start her books with a baseline of 4 stars, expecting to enjoy them—and most of the time, I do. The first book in this series was a solid 5 stars, so while I didn’t expect this sequel to match that, I definitely didn’t expect such a letdown.
The main issue for me was Stephan. He came across as a major a-hole and a coward throughout the entire book. There was no romantic tension, no emotional push and pull—just straight-up verbal abuse. Of all E.L. Beth’s antiheroes, Stephan is by far the most verbally abusive. He constantly belittled Nia from start to finish, and whatever “happy moments” they supposedly shared were off-page. We’re told they had good times, but we’re never really shown them. If Stephan felt anything other than hatred for Nia, it didn’t come through. The vibe was toxic, no in a sexy way.
I kept waiting for the story to turn around, for the usual highs and lows that make her couples compelling. Her heroes are often jerks, but they usually have redeeming qualities. Stephan, unfortunately, had none. He just gave me the creeps.
Honestly, Nia being away from him feels like the perfect happy ending.
The stars on this book go to Jheia and Zaiden's being present in it.
Looking ahead, I’m excited for Zaiden and Jheia’s next book. Fingers crossed it includes Stephan getting hit by a truck and exiting the series for good.
Not my favorite read. I really didn't like Stephen nor did I like Nia, she has to be the most TSTL mfc Ms Beth ever wrote. I don't think I'll read this book again. Love seeing Jheia and Zaiden again, can't wait for their 2nd book.
