The White Necromancer holds a grudge against the Phantom Badgers, and time is running out for the motley band of sell-swords. They are locked into the death-vise of an implacable foe, and the only key to escape is a desperate long shot at acquiring an enchanted Torc.
Eighteen months have passed since Dark Obligations, and the Phantom Badgers are facing the fact that the long-delayed wrath of the necromancer is drawing near. With death looming Durek leads a detachment on a desperate mission to locate the key to their survival, a mission made of secrets and deceptions which snowball into a twisted net of plots and subterfuge.
Their quest takes Durek, Dimitri, Kroh, Starr, Rolf, and the others of the Company’s inner circle from the Red Shores, through the Border Realms, and on to the Blasted Plains. Enemies abound, from Direbreed in the mountains to Eyade horsemen on the Plains, and on to the deadly spy corps of the Dark Threll. Once again the Badgers must face long odds, moving fast, fighting hard, and trying to stay one step of everyone else.
With spells, steel, and simple courage the men and women, Dwarves and Threll of the Phantom Badgers face their obligations and enemies with equal amounts of audacity and bravado. From Rolf Lightseeker, the hulking half-Orc devoted to his friends, to Elonia Starshine, the enigmatic half-breed Seer, and on to Arian Thyben, the retired cult-hunter, the Phantom Badgers take the reader down a dark and bloody road to a destination that will only beckon them onwards.
Born and raised in the icy wastelands of North Dakota, RW Krpoun joined the US Army, serving two enlistments before being honorably discharged at Fort Hood, Texas. Delighted to discover a land where snow was a novelty, he settled in Texas and took up a career in law enforcement, serving thirty years before retiring. His service included a Sheriff's Office and two Municipal police agencies, as well as two enlistments in the Texas National Guard as a Criminal Investigator.
RW lives on lakeside acreage with his lovely and amazingly tolerant wife Ann, and a band of ill-mannered animals who are all highly photogenic. His hobbies include reading, history, various forms of shooting, collecting battle-ready examples of medieval weaponry, and learning to use such weapons.
The Phantom Badgers continue to inspire, motivate and defy the odds in their never-ending quests for loot, adventure and notoriety. RW Krpoun continues to deliver, through masterful storytelling, with imaginative world building and intense action. The Badgers deliver and receive heart breaking losses, yet the Badgers move forward in their deadly dance towards their goal. RW Kpoun has created a franchise that truly deserves to continue, I truly enjoy this series, and will continue to support it. Strong writing, great adventures, well done RW, very well done. Onto book three.
One of the best day - to - day accounts of a mercenary band. The book shows you in detail how a small force of professionals can cut swathes through the enemy. Detailed planning, smart leadership and proper gear.
RW brings a depth to his characters that makes them seem real
I enjoyed the second book in the Phantom Badgers series and will continue the journey. The only thing i found annoying was the spelling mistakes. Whoever is editing the book needs to pay more attention, using “course” for “coarse” and “ tenants” for “tenets”, spellcheck and grammar check are not always right!
You have to enjoy the way this great author weaves his stories. He brings you in for the excitement of a good battle, keeps you there with the mystery of the wonder if what is planned will work. Finally he adds a little romance to keep you reading.
