L.L. McAlister's Beating For You is a powerful, intense, and deeply emotional journey that absolutely captivated me. I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars, primarily for the incredible story that unfolds within its pages.

From the moment I delved into the complex world of the "broken, tortured man with secrets stitched into his soul" and the "girl with a failing heart," I was completely invested. McAlister masterfully crafts a narrative where love isn't just a feeling, but a visceral struggle for survival. The push and pull between the characters, the raw vulnerability, and the sheer desperation to make their hearts 'beat' for each other creates an almost suffocating tension that I utterly devoured. The author isn't afraid to explore the darker, more "criminal" side of obsession, which makes the ultimate "sacrifice so final, it's beautiful" resonate even more profoundly. It's a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat and genuinely caring for these flawed, yet compelling, characters. The emotional depth and high stakes make this an absolutely amazing story.

Now, for the reason it's not a perfect five-star read for me, the cover. While certainly eye-catching, it does feel a little generic and "non-original." In my opinion, it doesn't quite capture the unique depth, darkness, and emotional complexity of the story inside. It's a minor quibble, but when a story is this strong, you want the packaging to reflect its brilliance.

Despite my small reservation about the cover, Beating For You is an absolute must-read for anyone who enjoys deeply emotional, character-driven dark romance with high stakes. L.L. McAlister has woven a truly amazing story that will stay with you long after the final page. Prepare to have your own heart race. Highly recommended!

it's nearly 3am i can't even see through my tears im so sad 💔😭

apologies in advance for the sound of my heart breaking into pieces….. completely speechless and heartbroken wrapped into a ball of emotion. i love books that deal with mental health on the darker side of the scale and don’t hold back. i love the raw emotions and the way someone can so beautifully put into words an emotion someone could never describe in a million years, but llmcalisterauthor did exactly that. this way tramua is represented through this book, how it can affect you, how it affects you, how we cope, etc, BEAUTIFUL ❤️‍🩹

i am not the same person I was before reading this book y’all 🥺❤️‍🩹 I will carry these characters with me for a long time. Hawk deserves the entire world, and reading everything he’s had to endure broke my heart. I adored his relationship with Peace, their relationship was so wholesome and made me wanna cry because it was so innocent and sweet. Jay…..jay 😭❤️ my entire heart is within the pages of this book. I am just speechless over the rollercoaster this one, I didn’t even know how it was going to end and by the time I reached the last page I sobbed like a baby at 3am and woke up with puffy eyes.

This was heavy, cute and sad. So many mixed emotions.
I got my heart ripped out when I read their backstory, rage but there were also funny moments where I laughed.

Broken pieces that’s try’s to fit together.

It could have been a 4,5⭐️ book but there were to many things/questions left unanswered so that’s what I missed in the book. But still a good book.

Literally writing this review with tears rolling down my cheeks. My heart cannot take this right now.

Some scenes had me absolutely sick, heartbroken, and devastated. Then …There was a point where I literally laughed harder than I’ve ever laughed reading a book. Now… I’m absolutely sobbing. This book was an absolute rollercoaster.

I highly suggest immersive reading. It was quite an experience.

The bond between Jay and Hawk felt so so real. And then there's the connection between Hawk and Peace it wasn’t just written, it lived and breathed. I was fully invested, heart racing with every moment between them.

And then came that twist. I swear it made me feel like I had multiple personalities for believing everything, I didn’t know whether to laugh at myself or cry. McAlister blindsided me in the best way, and I loved every second of it.

The ending? Absolutely shattered me. The kind of heartbreak that lingers in your chest long after you’ve closed the book. This isn’t just a story, it’s an emotional ride that will wreck you, rebuild you, and leave you begging for more.

3.5 stars! I went into this knowing it was going to be a romantic tragedy. Those are my favorite kind of books. While I did like this book and the story line, I felt it was alittle predictable and I love a good shock factor. It doe hit on some really rough and hard topics. I feel like I needed more questions answered about the dad though? All in all it was a good read!

Firstly, I owe L.L. McAlister an apology.

This ALC was kindly sent to me through Audible, and somehow it disappeared into my ever-growing audiobook library. I genuinely wish I had discovered it sooner because this wasn’t just another audiobook—it was an experience I’ll be thinking about for a very long time.

Beating For You: She Put The Body In The Nobody That I Was is one of those rare stories that quietly settles into your soul before completely breaking your heart.

I have always gravitated towards books that don’t shy away from the darker side of mental health. Not because they’re easy to read, but because when they’re written with honesty and compassion, they remind us that behind every diagnosis is a person simply trying to survive.

L.L. McAlister has written something incredibly powerful.

Hawk is one of those characters who will stay with me long after I’ve finished listening. Watching him navigate the complexities of Dissociative Identity Disorder, carrying the weight of unimaginable trauma while desperately trying to protect the people he loves, was both heartbreaking and beautifully portrayed. His internal battles were every bit as gripping as any action scene could ever be.

Then there’s Peace.

Her empathy, patience and unwavering kindness created some of the most tender moments in the entire book. She didn’t try to fix Hawk—she simply saw him. Their relationship felt genuine, hopeful and achingly beautiful.

The prose throughout this novel is stunning. Emotional, poetic and completely immersive. There were countless moments where I found myself pausing simply to absorb what I’d just heard.

But this is also an audiobook review…

And what an audiobook it is.

Ann Dahlia captured Peace perfectly, bringing warmth, vulnerability and quiet strength to every chapter she narrated.

Dean Miller, however, carries much of this story, and his performance is nothing short of exceptional. The emotional range required for Hawk is immense, yet every shift felt authentic and deeply human. He didn’t simply narrate the story—he invited me inside Hawk’s fractured world, allowing me to experience every fear, every moment of hope and every ounce of heartbreak alongside him.

There were times I completely forgot I was listening to an audiobook.

My headphones disappeared.

Only the story remained.

This is a beautifully written, emotionally devastating dark romance that explores trauma, identity, love and healing with remarkable sensitivity.

I must be a masochist because I really enjoy the ones that break me and make me cry. And BFY did exactly that. This one hurt, but it hurt. so. good.

I absolutely loved this story. L.L writes in stunning, knowing prose as they weave a beautiful and tragic tale, centered around Hawk and Jay, twins with a trauma filled childhood that has left them scarred in the worst ways. Especially emotionally. And Peace, a young woman with her own heartbreaking story. I identified with each of these characters, on a very personal level, for various reasons, and it made them very real for me. The more I can identify with a character, the more into their story I get. At first I was a little thrown by our masterful wordsmiths occasional use of the third person POV. But I ended up feeling really grateful, as it added a certain texture and emotion to the story that I feel would have been detrimental to leave out. I really want to say more, but I feel like I'd be taking away from your experience as a reader. But I will say that if you enjoy books that include themes like...

This one covers some really dark topics and I vehemently encourage you to read the trigger warning and content list. Your mental health and well-being are more important than any book, and I know the author feels the same way. This was an over all 5 outta 5 ⭐'s read, for me, and I'll also be giving it 2 outta 5 🌶️'s. Which was the perfect level of spice for BFY, in my opinion.

Brilliance! With echoes (no pun intended, IFKYK) of a modern gothic Jekyll and Hyde, we see a young man split apart by trauma, coping by way of disassociation and it begins to wear against his very being. Functioning and not knowing when your dark alter may take over is living in a constant state of fear, high stress, and having to keep people at length. But in Peace, he does connect and it's oh so beautiful.

She is so empathic and kind. She allows him to have precious moments of care free teenager fun, to experience a fraction of the youth he lost due to his horrible and abusive childhood. He manages his episodes quite well, but it becomes increasingly volatile as his love grows for Peace. Jealous, protective, posessive, lustful...the ID is very much a presence in his alter. But that too, is still a piece of him, a facet of this complicated, beautiful, scarred, sensitive, and tormented man.

Achingly beautiful prose, so raw and unfiltered with Hawk's fragile mind, it's a peek behind the curtain of this broken man's state of psychology and awareness of Dissociative Identity Disorder that just undid me with its poignancy. The scenes where he battles within himself is as gripping as any action scene. I absolutely am in love with Hawk.

A bold and unfliching story. It reaches into the recesses of painful human emotion, catapulting you into a deeply engrossing drama and an equally tender romance; hard edged and sharp with danger but shimmering in rare moments like a diamond, with pure, sparkling love at its core. Your heart will be tugged very hard and it will hurt, but sometimes life is bittersweet just like this.

This book will stick with you. You will cry. You will yell. You WILL even gag. It makes you feel just about every emotion possible.

L.L. McAlister writes in an almost poetic way, and she quickly became one of my favorite authors and a friend. She writes about mental health from a place of understanding, and you can feel that throughout this story.

Hawk and Peace's love story had me hooked from the beginning, but once you hit Chapter 4? Hold on because the emotional roller coaster STARTS.

I felt anger, heartbreak, hope, despair, and everything in between. I never knew what was coming next. There were moments when I genuinely couldn't tell what was real and what was imagined, and that made the experience even more intense.

And that ending?! UGH. I cried for so many different reasons.

Now let's talk about the audio. 🎧

Dean delivers so many different personalities, voices, and ages throughout this story. Every time someone new appeared, I was impressed by how distinct they felt. Jay and Hawk especially got me. I could feel what they were going through, and those performances have stuck with me.

Ann Dahlia as Peace and Mrs. Lawson was INTENSE. I loved Peace and absolutely hated Mrs. Lawson, which tells you everything you need to know about how well those characters were performed.

Peace and Hawk are both broken in their own ways. Neither one comes into this story whole or untouched.

They're two broken people who find each other, fight for their love, and somehow make you desperately want them to find their way through the darkness together.

This isn't one you simply finish and move on from.

You finish it, sit there for a minute, and realize you're still carrying pieces of Hawk and Peace with you. 🖤

This book completely caught me off guard. I knew I was going into a romantic tragedy, but what truly elevated it for me was the way the author built such a clear unreliable narrator from the start… and still managed to pull the rug out from under me. By the end, I was just as convinced as Hawk of what was real, so when the truth finally came crashing down, it hit just as hard. 

Hawk and Peace have a deeply complex dynamic. Watching the early stages of their friendship and seeing her navigate through his trauma while teaching him that touch doesn’t always equal pain… It was handled with so much care. Their love was as beautiful as it was devastating. 

Peace is patient, soft where he is fractured, always mindful of his boundaries. But love isn’t some magical cure, and at times I couldn’t help but ache for her. Not knowing which version of Hawk she would get, the emotional codependency threaded through every part of him… it felt suffocating, almost anxiety-inducing. And yet, she stayed. She accepted all his broken pieces while quietly hiding her own so he wouldn’t unravel. That’s what broke me the most. How both of them constantly swallowed their pain and secrets just to give the other their “best” version. She sacrificing herself to hold him together, him trying to bury his demons so they wouldn’t taint her. That, to me, was the real tragedy.

I won’t say much more because the less you know, the better. I still have questions…and honestly? I love that. There’s something unsettlingly real about a story that doesn’t hand you clean answers. You’re left sitting with it, turning it over in your mind, trying to make sense of something that refuses to be fully understood…

Wow...just wow

I was lucky to receive this book as an arc! And all I can say
Without giving any spoilers is this book takes you through the emotions you feel like you are right there with the characters. I have never read a book so deeply written it is destructive and heartbreakingly beautiful I really didn't know what I was in for with this book. Without spoiling the book you follow the story of Hawk, Jay and Peace. Twin brothers who have suffered greatly by the hands of their abusive father. Hawk meets peace and finds not only a friend in her but love and that not all people in his life are out to hurt him. The love between them is raw, unforgiving and rough. Heavily focussing on mental health issues and the trauma hawk and Jay have suffered, this book isn't your average love story, yes there is love and lots of it. However it's much deeper than that. The author writes occasionally in 3rd person and the book is somewhat confusing at times but this is all important to the story line and the biggest plot twist at the end of the book and will completely make sense at the end it is written incredibly well and I found myself not being able to put it down staying up late to finish it. It absolutely wrecked my soul and is absolutely a five star read for me! Please check your trigger warnings when reading!

I didn’t even think I was going to rate this book shortly after finishing it tbh! Thought it was going to take me forever! But I decided to force myself to so I can try and fully move on from what this book did to me! The audio WAS EVERYTHING AND THEN SOME! Let’s just say… I didn’t see or predict any of what had happened at all and I had to FORCE MYSELF TO FINISH THIS BOOK AND SIT AND ENDURE ALL THE PAIN WITH THE MMC! He deserved that, he deserved for me to sit with him all the way through! This book truly broke me open in ways I didn’t think possible but it also felt like I was feeling everything He was feeling and there’s comfort in that! This book and audio deserves to be talked about more and deserves a dang award! First book I threw, first book that I can’t even bring myself to look at, first book that idk will make it to my actual bookshelf instead of being in my closet! I am completely ruined over this book!

There’s so much more I want to say with this book but I just can’t! Yes I loved it but at the same time I HATED it! I didn’t hate it in a bad way whatsoever… I hated it in ways that it made me sit with the pain and endure it all with the MMC because that pain is something I don’t think most people can tolerate! It deserves more than 5 stars! 1000/10 for me is really how I feel!

I have read this book and had the honor of hearing it recorded to be released on audio.

This book is...everything! You will laugh, cry, feel such joy, be so disgusted you'll want to puke, be devastated and feel like your heart has been ripped from your chest. You WILL feel ALL the feels!

Hawk and his brother Jay are abused by their alcoholic father as punishment for their mother dying in childbirth. They eventually end up adopted by a family who loves them. This brings with it both joy and great pain for Hawk.

It's during a summer at the beach that Hawk meets the love of his life, Peace. She truly is his safe place. But Peace has secrets too.

Hawk will do anything to protect Jay and Peace. The question is, who is he protecting them from?

You will absolutely love this book. It will stay with you long after you read it. A re-read almost immediately after finishing is absolutely warranted!

Coming soon to Audio and I HIGHLY recommend you listen to it as well!!! I promise you won't regret it!

Check your triggers, because some of it gets rather dark but if you can, hang in there, it's worth it. I personally am not triggered by anything in this book.

This book needed more trigger warnings for sure, so if you go into this book PLEASE research before diving in. I went into this blindly, I will say the audio for this book is probably one of the best audios I've listened to and I'm a HUGE audiobook girlie, the narration was pure perfection 👌 this book is DARK, there is so much that goes on in this book and hard to wrap your head around its a good book overall, I'm tempted to do a re-read now that I know what I know but that's going to be a hot minute. I actually threw this book across my living room towards the end and I never cried so dang hard for a solid 20min straight holding my cat and rocking back and forth! This book is nothing but pure trauma, it is brutal but also extremely sad. I felt so much pain through the main character it honestly broke my heart and I had to remind myself its just a book, these are just fictional characters but you know what it doesn't help with this book because real life people have gone and lived through this kind of pain this character goes through. This book is not talked about enough so let's talk about it! ❤️🥺💔

What a rollercoaster I just went on with this story !!!! I had to take a min or 30 to sit back and let it all sink in!!!! Hawk .... what a poor soul..... has been through it all his whole life... I felt his pain through the pages.... the way Jay was there for him was beautiful..... Peace .... was just that for Hawk...... It was just this dark gut-wreching story that tore me apart.... I did have a few laughs in here though ... I also gag when other people gag ..so that had me giggling bc I know exactly what that is like !!!! lol ...
This book shattered my heart into a million pieces and will live rent free in my head for a long time!!!

This book was so emotionally heavy I needed a fluffy romance as soon as I finished it because damn was this HEAVY!

Hawk is so broken and damaged and deserved so much better 💔 his childhood and everything he goes through in the present day is just heartbreaking! I liked how Peace brought out a lighter side of Hawk but he’s just battling too many demons in his own head.

The ending of the book, I did see how it was going to end but I was still completely & utterly devastated. When I finished I sat and thought about different scenes and it was almost more heartbreaking looking back than reading it at the time.

I stared off into the abyss after finishing the book.
Did I feel like I was predicting some of the things that happened, yes. I didn’t expect the ending. I also feel like I had a few lingering questions… but to me they weren’t plot holes. Just my genuine curiosity of how things transpired maybe after everything. The characters were perfect. Jay, Hawk, Echo, Peace….. the dynamic, the love, the loss, the surrender.
This was super emotional. Is this book going to be for everyone, absolutely not. But it’s worth a read if you like emotionally driven romance.

Wow, I absolutely loved this book!.

The storyline, the characters, the plot just everything about this book was fantastic! I did not see the ending go the way it did but wow I can't imagine it going any other way than it did. The plot twists in this book will have you gripping your seat, I could not put this book down and devoured it within the day! It had me laughing and ugly crying! What a story- absolutely a 5 star read. You will not regret picking this up!

Oh be still my heart. This one was so beautifully tragic. Initially I thought one thing but then I doubted myself because how everyone else acted. And then at the end I turned out to be right. I was so not prepared for the ending. I definitely cried a handful of times throughout this one, and had to take breaks.

The narrator’s did such a good job with it. The way Dean portrayed Jay was so perfect.
