“Unshackled: A 365-Day Devotional for Women,” by Debra A. Chapman, feels a lot like sitting down with the kind friend who understands exactly where you are. There are dozens or even hundreds of women who are stepping over other people’s assumptions about them, who have begun demanding more of their spiritual selves than just passing beauty. It’s surprisingly manageable in its daily format, just a few minutes each morning with some scripture, some reflection on the topic of mothering, and something to pray about as you go through your day.

What I liked most about Chapman was how honest she was. She doesn’t write from some ivory tower of perfection; rather, she is incredibly open about her own struggles with anxiety, trauma, and solidifying tough relationships. That vulnerability is why the book feels authentic and not preachy. Every day, she pairs scripture with her own reflections and specific prayers, resulting in what truly feels like a toolkit to use when dealing with actual emotional hardships.

This approach can be genuinely helpful for someone who is grappling with the fallout of toxic relationships or trying to shed patterns that are no longer serving them.

The writing is friendly and accessible, which makes it easy to stick with it throughout the whole year. Chapman has a rare ability to render spiritual truths understandable at street level without reducing them to trite clichés. The rhythm of each day – scripture, reflection, prayer – offers a comforting tempo that forms a steady spiritual workout. A lot of people will find it grounding, particularly when life seems hectic.

That said, this is an unapologetically Christian devotional, written primarily for women who actively practice or seek to explore their Christian faith. If you’re not from a faith tradition or if you want something more interfaith or secular, this isn’t likely your book. Finally, those who desire profound theological analysis or intricate literary expression might consider it to be a little mortal. The ease with which it can be approached also makes it seem a little generic on occasion. That is why I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

In its niche, however, “Unshackled” actually delivers. It’s an excellent tool for Christian women, particularly those seeking daily encouragement and guidance to experience freedom in Christ. Chapman establishes a space where readers feel seen, supported, and gently guided rather than judged or lectured. If you’re a Christian woman in search of real, daily, and faith-based encouragement, then this devotional is one to be read.
