Zandra had blossomed from the love and kindness of Mrs. Thrikell, who had rescued her from a gypsy caravan at the age of twelve.
Now, blissfully unaware of the radiant beauty she had become, Zandra was unprepared for the jealousy and hostility she would encounter from London society... and for the strange, new emotions borne by the passionate gaze of the dashing Captain Fitzallen.
But, dare she trust her own feelings of passion? He had known so many women. Would she be just another of his heedless conquests?
Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, Clark began her career in show business with the Pittsburgh Children’s Theater and later acted at the Rochester Arena Theater. In the late 1940s, she moved to New York to take the female lead in the Buck Rogers TV series, “Captain Video and His Video Ranger,” which ran 1949 to 1955.
Her marriage to lighting designer David Clark ended in divorce.
She is survived by husband, Dimitri Vassilopoulos, her two daughters, Megan Clark and Emily Carvajal, and two grandchildren.
It was a lovely April morning at market day: small children skirting legs, smiles and chatter. Mrs Thirkell, a widow, was chatting with her friend, Mrs. Hooper. There was a quiet snip and strings fluttered; the lady’s reticule was in the hands of a young dirty girl. Annie, Mrs. T’s maid, spotted the little Gypsy and shouted. The girl turned blindly and ran into the path of a carriage.
The wispy 12-year-old ragamuffin was nursed, bathed and cared for; when no one came to claim her, Mrs. T -childless and a very nurturing woman- formerly adopted her. The entire household fell in love with ‘Zandra’.
Within a short time, Mrs T’s sister came for a visit with her 15-year-old son and heir, Lucus. Zandra refers to the prim and oh-so-proper young man as Luc -he doesn’t like the nickname- and invites him to her favorite spot on the property. What happens next is priceless.
~~~Everything I just told you is in the first two chapters.~~~
Years go by and Zandra is 18: now-tutored, beautiful and still as refreshing as ever. Mrs. T’s deceased husband’s nephew comes for a visit. He brings his fiancee, her mama and a host of little problems. At the same time, Luc/Lucus/Luke has retired from the military and is on his way home when he is saved by Zandra.
I liked Luc. He had a maturity beyond his years. He dealt with Zandra with a winning combination of patience and dry humor. The nephew and his betrothed provided the drama. I was more than ready for their conclusion.
I especially enjoyed Luc and Zandra’s unusual HEA. I love it when literary scenes provide me with a smile.
