With burglaries at one end of the town and a CBD store on the other, Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan is stretched thin juggling small time crime on Edisto Beach. But someone stops the burglaries ahead of her, someone whose methods remind her of someone all too familiar. Vigilante justice only adds more issues to her plate as lines blur between criminal and hero.
The problem is that the vigilante has an attraction for the chief. And she's not too eager to put the cuffs on him.
C. Hope Clark was born and reared in the South, from Mississippi to South Carolina with a few stints in Alabama and Georgia. The granddaughter of a Mississippi cotton farmer, Hope holds a B.S. in Agriculture with honors from Clemson University and 25 years’ experience with the U. S. Department of Agriculture to include awards for her management, all of which enable her to talk the talk of Carolina Slade, the protagonist in most of her novels. Her love of writing, however, carried her up the ranks to the ability to retire young, and she left USDA to pen her stories and freelance.
Lowcountry Bribe‘s won several awards to include finalist status of the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense sponsored by Romance Writers of America. The novel enjoyed semi-finalist status (top 100 out of 10,000) in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest. The book went on to win the Silver Falchion Award for Crime Fiction twice and the EPIC E-book Award for Best Mystery three times.
Her books cover three mystery series in the Carolina Slade Mysteries, the Edisto Island Mysteries, and the Craven County Mysteries.
Hope is married to a 30-year veteran of federal law enforcement, a Senior Special Agent, now a contract investigator. They met on a bribery investigation within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the basis for the opening scene to Lowcountry Bribe. Hope and her special agent live on the rural banks of Lake Murray outside of Chapin, South Carolina, forever spinning tales on their back porch, bourbon and coke in hand, when not tending a loveable flock of hens.
She also currently manages FundsforWriters.com, a weekly newsletter service she founded that reaches 28,000 writers to include university professors, professional journalists and published mystery authors. Writer’s Digest has recognized the site in its annual 101 Best Web Sites for Writers for two dozen years.
She’s published in The Writer Magazine, Writer’s Digest, and other trade and online publications. She speaks at writers’ conferences, book clubs, libraries and more, and has taught many webinars for the Writer's Digest University world. Hope is a member of Mystery Writers of America.
CHClark gets better with each book. I read this in paperback, on my e-reader, and on my desktop just so I could get through it as fast as possible, depending on my activities. Having finished the first quick read, I will now go back and read paperback thoroughly. WOW. 10 out of five stars. I agree with another review this book reveals yet one more layer to the complex of Callie. Yes, there are many types of affection and admiration. Yes, family may remain loyal to criminals. Just enough of the regular characters without crowding the scenes. Sophie starting to get just a might too cranky and loud for my taste. Ditto realtor Janet. Nice call back to former nemesis on council. Perfect timing as to seasons in the book and the actual seasons here on the East Coast. Interesting insight into the minds of thieves, and their kin. Dual perspectives well done. Vigilante identity a wonderful surprise. Perhaps a new series of books based around that character? * possible to give Callie a break from fire? * looking forward to update on Stan and Donna in next book? * would LOVE a map of the area included, soon? * as always, more to learn about the people and the geography of the area * more ways to die added to list, eek
Hidden on Edisto is the latest compelling entry in the Edisto series by C. Hope Clark. The story begins with the grand opening of a new business on Edisto Beach and the unprecedented amount of attention this particular store draws from the public, including several protestors. While keeping watch over the event, Police Chief Callie Morgan scans the crowd for potential trouble and sees a familiar face at a distance. But she thinks she might be imagining things with only the quick glimpse she caught before he was gone. Still, she can’t shake the idea that a recent visitor to the island has returned, or perhaps never left after their previous encounter.
The book continues in chapters alternating between character perspectives, answering some questions as the story develops but keeping the reader guessing as to the bigger picture. Many recurring characters in the series make entertaining appearances, and new Edisto personalities are introduced.
Hidden on Edisto includes multiple story lines, each of which makes for good reading on its own. But Ms. Clark masterfully ties them all together in the surprising finale. This is another “don’t miss” book from the author, and I look forward to reading more of her Edisto stories.
With Hidden on Edisto, the reader finds Chief Callie Morgan splitting her attention between the new problems of a CBD store opening on the beach and burglars hitting homes on the other end. But a new wrinkle develops when it appears that a vigilante seems to know the plans of the burglars before they make a move. More surprising the vigilante seems intent on protecting the beach and its people as much as Callie. Or is it because of Callie?
Having read and enjoyed all of Ms. Clark's novels, I have to admit this one is her best yet. In this installment, she has peeled back a layer of Callie's personality to reveal a side of her that isn't so much 'by the book', acknowledging neither life nor law enforcement is black or white. And when a character from a previous novel has reappeared...or maybe never left the island...she feels his presence at the edge of the happenings.
Five big stars for this latest in the series. Can't wait to see what the next one has in store for readers.
I have been reading Hope's books sonce the very beginning. She always finds a way to surprise me. In Hidden on Edisto, we are once again met with a place and people we are linked to. I like that this one is different and shows another side of the beach life. Sometimes we forget that no matter how idealistic a place is, it can still be influenced by the outside world. I did get quite confused with some of Callie's split feelings and then some of her action wasnt as drawn out as other books, but I definitely think this one was still a wonderful Fall read. I highly recommend this whole series!
I believe that Hope Clark just keeps getting better and better. This book was one I couldn’t put down. I loved how she brought in a character from the last book she wrote. It was good mystery and had some surprising things happen in this book. Some of the characters that you think couldn’t be bad, was! This is a great read. Rather you are on the beach or sitting on your front porch you will enjoy it!
C. Hope Clark’s books have everything I love: strong women, Southern mysteries, and the beach. This series in particular is a favorite. Police Chief Callie Jean Morgan, her family, friends, and the quirky characters of Edisto Island are people I always want to learn more about.
What tips Clark's books over into great reading are her descriptions of Edisto Island. Edisto Island becomes another character and another old friend I like to return to.
What a great book! Callie is once again on the case, with the usual buffet of interesting and rowdy characters that are sure to hook you on the first page. Throw in a vigilante who may or may not be a stranger, a CBD store dilemma and a grandmother with a hidden secret. Whats not to love? Once again C. Hope Clark has found a way to make a story feel like visiting friends and will make you long to read the next book already.
C. Hope Clark gets better and better. The Edisto residents are so real and so well developed that you feel caught up in their inner most lives! This is one that kept me up late!
Hidden on Edisto is an exciting Edisto Island mystery. It takes a deeper dive into what makes Callie tick while telling an interesting story, possibly the best one yet. A great read.
You instantly feel like you’re home on Edisto Island. The characters like old friends. The suspense builds and the plot thickens. I look forward to being on Edisto again soon. Don’t miss this installment.
