WHEN EVIL HIDES BEHIND A BADGE, NO ONE IS SAFE . .. It’s 1976, Los Angeles. Sarah Collins, a young mother of two, is brutally raped and murdered at the Hollywood Reservoir. For nineteen years, the murder remains unsolved and the case goes cold. In 1995, the streets of Los Angeles are being terrorized by Jake Babbage, a traffic cop who uses his position of power to rape and murder innocent women. On his way to court one day, Babbage sees Judge Daniel Hart. The two recognize each other, and the terrifying night of nineteen years ago comes back to haunt the highly respected judge. The aftermath of the encounter brings long-buried secrets to light and tests the moral fiber of Judge Hart, who has committed himself to protecting those victimized by the very crimes of which he is now accused.
Garret Holms is a judge and a criminal trial expert with more than fifteen years of on-the-job experience. He has worked all aspects of the justice system, from superior court judge to defense attorney to criminal prosecutor. Holms has tried every type of criminal case imaginable, including special circumstances homicide, sexual assault, police corruption, and gangland murder. Garret Holms knows the justice system as only an insider can, and he brings that expertise to his prose, creating one of the most truthful, accurate, and tension-filled suspense novels ever written.
Did you ever wonder about the background of some of the judges who pass judgment on others?
In "Grant of Immunity" Danny Hart was a teenager who was talked into joining his friend Snake for a night of fun. Danny was age fifteen. He used to babysit for the two little children of Snake's girlfriend, Sarah. On this night, Snake was showing off and after smoking a bit of weed, things got rough. Snake made sexual demands of Sarah and Danny wanted no part of it but Snake threatened to cut her if Danny didn't agree. By the end of the night, Sarah had been murdered by Snake and he had a knife with Danny's prints on it.
Years later, Jake is a Marine vet and had worked for the Chilean secret police. He has joined the police department and is a sergeant in the patrol department using his position to demonstrate power and make women submit to his cruel desires. He pulls women over for minor or made up traffic violations and then forces them to do what he wants.
The reader hopes someone will stand up to him but his victims are chosen for their submissiveness and are intimidated. We have seen crooked police on the TV show, The Shield and are familiar with some characters in Joseph Wambaugh novels so the reader doesn't know what to expect.
Not to reveal plot, Snake (John Babbage) finally picks a woman to exercise his power over but after beginning to have his way with her, he gets a radio call from the department and has to leave. Later, this person reports him and the drama boosts up.
A case goes to court and Danny Hart is now a judge and he and Babbage have a confrontation.
The plot is very realistic and the author who has over fifteen years of judicial experience, weaves an exciting, fast moving and realistic plot that is hard to put down.
In a case of good against evil, Hart takes a stand but how will he come out of this? The courtroom action and the behind the scenes moves by the prosecution and defense make this a story that will be hard to put down. The ending took a bit to reach the finale but otherwise I felt that this was an excellent read and totally recommend it.
I was asked to read and review this book. I received a free book in exchange for an honest review. This story centres around two people and how past actions can still haunt you so many years later. It is also a lesson in how people must face the consequences of their actions. The characters are believable and so convincing that I ended up cringing whenever one of the main characters (who is a bonafide psychopath) appeared in the story. Garret Holms has a background in the legal system and it certainly shows. I thought that the British legal system was complicated but it appears that the American system is just as complicated. However the writer gave further explanations of the legal speak but wrote it in such a way that even I understood it and I didn't feel stupid. The writer's style is such that I felt as though I was an invisible onlooker. The courtroom scenes were reminiscent of an episode of Law & Order. I really, really enjoyed this story and would most definitely read any further books by this author. I found this book was more appealing and exciting than anything by such as John Grisham. Well done.
Wow! What a fantastic story. I haven't read a crime story in awhile because I get obsessed with them but wow this was so good. And it's a kindle unlimited so you can read it for free. Talk about suspense and angst. Holy cow I wanted to stop reading and put it down so many times but it kept pulling me back in. A murder of a 22 year old single mother is committed. We know from the beginning who did it so no spoiler will be told. What we don't know is how the heck this guy gets away with everything else he's done and how the heck he's so smooth about it. A detective, 2 motherless children, a judge a mouthy D. A. And a bad cop that continues to commit crimes as though it's his right. There were a few unanswered questions left at the end I could obsess over but I'll try not to. Great book and totally worth the 5 stars I gave it. If you like suspense and angst drama then get reading!
The beginning is very sexually explicit and sad. I thought that i would NOT like this book. I kept reading and by the end was a huge fan. The story just pulls you in with the humanity of the characters and wondering what is next. Could not put the book down. You will not be disappointed. This book has so many twists and turns, it keeps you spinning. The only problem i found was that this is the only book i could find for this author. Might be hard for him to top or even match this one! I would certainly be interested in reading more from this author.A
What a story! I was literally on the edge of my seat. I could feel the tension in the court room. This was not two dimensional! I could see everyone's face, feel their breath, it was crazy, I couldn't put it down. I wasn't sure til the very end that the good guy was going to come out of this alive or with his freedom! In the end, all I know is that I want to read more from Garrett Holms.
I enjoy crime novel and particularly enjoyed the court room drama. The portrayal of the thoughts of the Judge during the trial felt realistic and I was not surprised when finished to find that Garret Holms had been a Judge. Well done, we need more and never leave out the court scenes!
This was an awesome book, I couldn’t hardly put it down. I finally finished it at 2:00 in the a.m. it was a wild roller coaster ride reading all the different turns and twists the author takes you through. Can’t wait for his next book to come out!
I love this & I can't wait for more. I will be also leaving a review on Goodreads @ Amazon. And letting everyone know about it. So i gave it a 5 Stars.
I hope this is the start of a series as it was very well done. It won't appeal unless you're into courtroom dramas, though, as most of it is set in and around the courtroom. It got a little heavy at times and confusing, I found, as of course I'm no lawyer. Some of it seems so confusing, though it is pretty fascinating to learn about all the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on we never get to see or hear about. I didn't understand at all why Fitz objected to Erin's rap-sheet not being run by the prosecutor in one instance. I'd have expected he wouldn't have want it run......so this left me somewhat baffled. I did like Judge Daniel. He was a decent bloke, I thought, as were both Fitz and Sean. It was nice to see the really powerful lawyers in the courtroom were women as well. That makes a change. He got the apostrophe right in victims' once then wrote it as victim's later on in !! He missed one in Collins' murder and Reynolds' response, too. He used ringer and not wringer, then all of a sudden between pages 340 and 346 he got his speechmarks totally messed up. Only in those pages, not before or afterwards so I'm not sure what happened there !! One minute the bailiff of the court was a male but then "the bailiff shook her head." This aside, it wasn't horrendously full of errors which was good. I'll definitely take a look and see what else he's written and download another.
This really deserves a 4.5. What a riveting read. In 1976 a teen and a young man are involved in a brutal murder and rape of a young mother. The teen is actually an unwitting bystander to the crime but nonetheless present when the crime was committed. Nineteen years later the lives of the 2 males are pulled together in an almost unbelievable way. The teen is now a judge and the young man a member of the LAPD. When they encounter each other, a series of tragic events unfold that bring the decades old crime to light. An extremely well-written book that will keep you turning the pages.
Garret Holmes did a great job of making me want more with this book. On the edge of my seat reading that kept me switching between believing characters. If you like these types of stories, this is definitely a must read
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The pace was smooth and even where it needed to be and then picked up with the right burst of suspense at the appropriate moments. That is what kept me interested alongside the actual storyline.
There was a predictability within the story which normally puts me off slightly...but you know what...it actually worked well in this book. I am still wondering if that was just coincidental or the author actually planned it that way. Despite feeling intentional it was cleverly written and again made the story all that more interesting.
The characters within this book also had a likeability factor...well most...as I found it hard to like Jake Babbage, the antagonist. Daniel Hart, the main character in this book is very likeable. He feels real, down-to-earth and as a reader, I felt empathy towards the situation he found himself in. As I mentioned earlier, Jake Babbage is a down right...well...he is mean, nasty and very unlikeable...which means the author did his job. I really despised him. He was weak, a bully and I kept hoping someone would come along and basically kick his arse! Then you have the legal eagles: Amanda for Daniel vs Doris for Babbage ...great characterisations. Each fit the person they were representing to a "T". The contrast between the pair was clearly evident and well presented. I did wonder if Doris was just a bit too arrogant at times but then remembered I was reading book and not a Court Transcript so who cares! Sean and Erin...hmmm...I liked them, but never felt truly connected to them despite both playing fairly big roles in the story.
The author is a Judge in "real-life" and this was evident in his attention to detail. The court scenes were well written and made me picture myself sitting alongside the others in the public gallery.
The ending seemed somewhat abrupt in the sense that there was a massive build-up throughout the pages and then...it just ended a little too happily-ever-after for me. Regardless of this, I did really enjoy this book and definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspense/legal-thrillers!
Fast paced, exciting and quite gripping this book is a must for any crime/law novel fan.
On July 4th 1976, fifteen year old Danny Hart is involved in the murder of a young mother of two named Sarah Collins. His friend 'Snake' as he was known then, a manipulative and violent man killed her in cold blood for not removing her clothes for him. Shaken and disturbed by the event Danny considers telling the police everything but 'Snake' has made it so that if Danny says a word it will look like Danny did it since his fingerprints are all over the murder weapon. Struggling to come to terms with everything Danny decides to become a judge to help make things right by saving the innocent from fates they don't deserve.
19 years later Danny has achieved his goal but 'Snake' is back and is now a cop going by his real name Jake Babbage. Using his badge and power to stalk women he is still committing crime and getting away with it. His next target is Erin Collins, the grown up daughter of the woman he murdered in 1976. When Erin makes a complaint of sexual assault against Babbage, he stops at nothing to make her life a misery. However she is well protected by her older brother Sean and William Fitzgerald (the Detective who was dealing with the murder case of Sarah Collins nineteen year earlier). Can Babbage find a way to finally get his revenge on Erin like he did her mother or will he finally be outwitted by a more mature Danny Hart and William Fitzgerald?
I enjoyed this book a lot, the chapters are quite short and switch between the perspectives of the different characters. Every time you turn the page the unexpected happens in the plot and you can't help but keep reading. You can tell the author has a vast knowledge of the Law and the Justice System and it makes it more believable than other books of its genre.
I received this book in a Goodreads First Reads draw.
This is an excellent legal thriller. Garret Holms, a judge and a legal expert centres his novel around the courtroom. His writing of the unfolding courtroom drama and all its intricacies are gripping. He has an excellent knowledge of legal processes and can write about them in a clear and entertaining way.
Garret Holms writes short chapters often only a few pages long, each from the perspective of one of the characters in the book. I found this style to be particularly effective turning the story into a real page turner. I found I consumed large amounts of this book in single sittings.
His descriptions of the lack of empathy and conscience of a psychopath were believable, particularly when involved in the legal process, showing that the author was able to write from experience.
What let the story down for me was the descriptions of the individual characters and their psychological motivations outside of the courtroom and I believe the book would have benefited from more concentration in this area. Taking more time to build and develop each character. It was hard for me to feel empathy for the characters at times.
Overall, this was a thoroughly entertaining read and the story would easily be adaptable for a TV series or a film.
To my mystery crime thriller reading friends, pick this one up, you won't regret it. It's just a nice fast read and, yes, there were things that you can pick apart (like I know some of you will) but it's just a good one to entertain you on a long flight or a rainy day at home.
For instance, I don't know that if I had witnessed or been part of such a traumatic event at the age of 15 I would have just been able to put myself into my studies and eventually become a judge. I think I might have needed some "help" by then but people are wired different, I guess.
The cop is a psycho, that's all I'll say. Anyone that keeps boas for pets I kind of raise my eyebrow to, just kill a couple of rabbits, no problem, it's just snake food.
But then again, the assistant DA was just as nutty. Her actions in the courtroom during the trial were a little too theatrical for me and I know of a lot of judges that wouldn't have been as patient with her as in the book. In a small way what happens to her at the end is kind of karma coming around, although they really don't say much about what her final status, like apologizing to Judge Hart might have been appropriate!
My favorite characters were the surviving children, Sean and Erin.
In 1976, a young mother of two named Sarah Collins is raped and killed, but when the guilty party remains undiscovered, the case goes cold for 19 years. 19 years later, Jake Babbage, the man guilty of the assault, continues to rape and murder young women. But when he fails to kill Erin Collins, Sarah Collins' daughter, he is finally seen for what he is. On his way to court, he recognizes his forced accomplice Judge Daniel Hart from 1976. The case is then revived and drags the main characters in. But will Babbage be the one who is charged for the crimes committed?
Grant of Immunity is a very well written legal thriller. It is captivating, intelligent, and exciting. A few events in the story did feel a bit convenient, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I highly recommend it to anyone on the lookout for a gripping read.
Excellent Read! Fast paced and intelligently written, the characters jump of the page and stay with you. Holms explores moral ambiguity and human dilemmas in such a way that you find yourself wondering, 'what would I do in a situation like this?'. The story is tightly plotted around courtroom scenes and relationships between characters. It is a gripping read. I couldn't put it down. Holms gives us an inside look at parts of the justice system not often examined and he does it with strong characters, a well woven plot, and an ending that suits the beginning yet still comes as a surprise. The story lingers long after you've read the last page.
Fans of the legal thriller genre: heads up! Way, way up! There's a new guy in town and he can write courtroom drama with the best of them. Lean spare prose and nothing tricky here. Just good old fashioned story telling with a great cast of characters. Angelenos especially will love the accuracy of the backdrop for this riveting tale of murder, prosecution and criminal trial. Judge Holms clearly knows the courtroom and its inhabitants well. This one has a particularly satisfying ending and a nice little surprise twist that I didn't see coming. I hope this is the beginning of a legal franchise. More please, your honor!
I highly recommend Grant of Immunity, which takes you behind the scene of the L.A. justice system, and then builds to a crescendo featuring a face-off between a LAPD Sergeant and a sitting trial judge, both who were at the scene of a horrible crime and murder when the cop was 21 and the judge was only 15. Who is telling the truth and who is lying? Which seeks immunity from prosecution? Holms keeps the reader guessing in this thriller and uses his extensive background as prosecutor, defense attorney, and judge to realistically describe each facet of the court process leading to the gripping trial and surprising aftermath. –R.N. Shapiro, author of ‘Taming the Telomeres’
Pretty good book with a few twists and turns. Interesting read, even knowing "whodunnit" from almost the beginning. Were a few loose threads that I kept waiting for the author to tie up, which he did not, but those did not affect the story overall. Also a few idiosyncrasies in some of the courtroom scenes, but again, did not affect the overall outcome. (Just made me flip back and forth a few times to make sure I had read things correctly the first time around.)
Overall, not bad and I would read more from this author.
Anything less than five stars wouldn't do this book justice. This novel has everything you need to read all rapped up in a mesmerizing storyline, having some involvement in law enforcement I scrutinised this book expecting to find all kinds of flaws in the legal representation of the story with respect too the facts of the case, the research work for the legal aspects of the book was amazing to say the least. You will find yourself glued to this book from page one.
Taut thriller with more authenticity than you can shake a stick at.
Grant of Immunity has something many legal thrillers simply do not: the realism that an author who has served as a judge and criminal trial expert can provide. Many legal thrillers are written by corporate lawyers imagining life in the trenches. Not this one. Not only did I enjoy this story of an evil cop out for revenge immensely but I got an education as well. Not bad for what some might call a ‘beach read’. Grant of Immunity is the real thing.
I received this book free from Goodreads giveaways. This was just a story but written by someone with first hand experience in the legal system and it showed. Very well written with believable characters. It was just plain scary and I felt for all of Babbage's victims and for Daniel Hart as he to was a victim. I've always thought the justice system flawed and this showed how badly it COULD be manipulated by unscrupulous or ambitious people.
I chose this rating because it was terrific reading. The story line was very believable. It took my mind through a range of emotions. I really had a hard time putting this book down. The trial was good and held my interest throughout. The ending was action packed and exciting. This is my first read of Garrett Holms and it definitely won't be my last. Good luck Garret...
A beach-worthy thriller; the kind that makes your stomach twist in knots, has you rooting for the "good guys" and wanting more from same characters. Nice twists and turns and action to make you want to keep reading but with characters who despite the flaws win you over. I am hoping a second book will follow.
