Eyes of Awakening #1

Eye in the Blue Box

Rate this book
Fast-paced dark fantasy filled to the brim with eerie monsters and action-packed battles. A must-read for those who enjoy strong character development and world-building.

NO DREAMS. JUST NIGHTMARES.

A dark fantasy world rife with monsters, blood, and fear.

Yet the seeds of friendship still strive to bloom …

James Mun likes his internship, his daily doses of instant ramen, and late mornings when he can roll around in bed. He dislikes the gym, people who take up parking spaces, his sister’s annoying family get-togethers, and anything else that gets in the way of his chosen pace of life.

When he’s born into “the Flowering,” a surreal dimension that select humans enter each time they fall asleep, needless to say, he is not happy. He’s not exactly thrilled, either, to travel throughout the Flowering with Crew Blue, a group of humans who follow a giant, blue wolf as their guide. Above all, though, he dislikes the crew’s leader. She’s always forcing him to battle the nightmarish monsters that prowl the Flowering’s many planes, which change as swiftly and unpredictably as sweet dreams morphing into nightmares. It’s hard enough simply surviving every night without risking getting eaten!

But as James becomes entangled in the return of an ancient evil spawned within the Flowering, he discovers that what he’d once deemed as nuisances aren’t so troublesome after all. His dark and harrowing adventures open his eyes to see how the bonds forged between friends and family can change the fate of everything.

*My first langue is Korean, so I'm posting this review in Korean and using Google translate for English :D

The writing is so well done, there's no flow to it. It's a gripping story that once you start reading, you won't want to put it down. At times, the tension is so intense that I feel like I need to take a break. But there are also heartwarming, comforting moments and subtle humor. This book has a wonderful mix of entertainment. The action scenes are so vividly depicted that it feels like watching
a movie. The scenes are so well-connected that you'll be lost in a world of imagination the entire time you're reading. This is a truly well-written and enjoyable book.

I loved the MMC and his dislike fur so many things. that actually made me laugh because it's so relatable. but this book really pulls you into that dream world with him. I loved the action and adventure. the banter was great.
I'm excited to read what comes next.

As a young teenager, this book attracted my attention and engaged my interest. Ann Yihang Kim's Eye in the Blue Box truly lives up to its reputation as a dark fantasy novel, immersing readers in a world filled with shadowy intrigue and haunting mysteries. I thoroughly enjoyed this volume for its captivating plot and storyline, which is enhanced with many complex theories and subplots cleverly and seamlessly woven in. I was impressed by how intricate the main plot was, yet how effortlessly Kim gradually explained it throughout her book. Kim portrays vivid scenes and storylines that fill your mind and remain in your head long after you finish reading. Filled with otherworldly ideas, dark secrets, unanswered questions, mysterious characters, influential power, tangled and strained relationships between friends and family members, all of it joins together to emphasize the battle between good and evil, light and dark, right and wrong. Throughout the book, the characters grow, learn, and develop the skills they need to survive and fight as they work to unravel the tightly knotted mystery that not only unites heroes, but also attracts unwanted enemies. Although the book is somewhat dark and gory at times, I believe both adults and teenagers will be drawn to its elaborate storyline and the relatable relationship struggles it explores. Because the story moves at a fast pace, readers will need to pay close attention to fully grasp what’s happening. Ann Yihang Kim's Eye in the Blue Box is exceptionally well-crafted and quickly became one of my personal favorites. I can’t wait for the next book to be published! I have received this book for free as an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this honest review. :D

This book was absolutely amazing! I don’t think I would have came across this book on Amazon on my own. I won the kindle version through Goodreads giveaways. I am writing this review on my own free will.

I need more!! 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Have you ever started reading a book and just wondered to yourself, wtf is going on, that where James “woke up” is very bizarre. It took a little bit for me to understand the Flowering.

Once, the plot starts picking up I was hooked and didn’t want to put this book down. There’s action, adventure, a dystopian and paranormal. There are parts that are also quite horrifying.

If you like horror, weird and out there stories then I’d recommend this to you!

Eye in the Blue Box by Ann Yihyang Kim is the first installment in the Eyes of Awakening series. As the story begins, there’s a young man named James Mun who’s an engineering intern living a routine life. But his ordinary day changes into something strange and dangerous when he falls asleep and ends up in the Flowering. This is a separate dimension that has its own set of rules and consequences. Soon, he sees this world expanding into confusion, danger, and survival.

One of the things I immediately loved about Kim’s work is that it did not rush into explanations. Readers, along with the main characters, got to learn from the experiences instead. There was so much going on and unfolding at the right moments; from the powerful Shamans and dangerous factions to the mystery connecting James’ broken watch and the Red Calf. I also appreciated the strong speculative fantasy elements that balanced well with the psychological mystery at play.

The characters were developed very well. Starting with James, whose character is believable with fears, confusion, and being out of his depth. But he becomes more than capable as this dimension begins to shape him. He’s not your typical overnight hero. The biggest part is his relationship with Crew Blue. This helps to move the story along. There’s Lux, who adds humor to lighten the mood, but we also get to see over time that he is carrying some emotional weight. This really comes out when he talks about his father’s illness and making sacrifices to support his family. Honey initially comes off as tough and hard to win over, but she eventually becomes very raw and honest among the group. This is highlighted when danger comes close to home.

There’s also E, who was the most layered and complex of all the characters in my opinion. She stays in survival mode and comes off as this intense character. But she’s under pressure, which the story reveals, and only then was I able to fully understand why she was that way. We can’t forget Bloom, the blue wolf with his memorable presence. He was more than just a companion. He had everything to do with the group’s safety and how they moved. I also realized that he did not fit into the mold of what a citizen should be. I think this is what made his character stand out for me.

There were quite a few scenes throughout all three parts of the book that stood out for me. For one, when James encountered the blue box early on, this set the tone for how dark and strange the narrative became. I also thought chapter six was one of the most effective parts. The rescue showcased Crew Blue’s mission, but it also revealed that there was more to the Flowering than its dangers. By chapter fifteen, I realized the whole mystery was much bigger, especially when the hunters close in on Bloom and James’s watch changes. Also, one of the things I appreciated was Lux’s backstory. Kim slows the story down a bit so that we can find out more about Lux, and it changed how I initially saw him. It made the events in part three hit much harder. There’s so much emotional investment by the time we get to the scenes in the city, the tower, the market, the third, and the final escape.

I loved how Kim shifted the pacing to fit the scenes. Early on, it’s quick because James is being thrown from one frightening situation after another. By the time the Flowering is explained, the pacing slows down, and I felt that was appropriate to give readers a better understanding. I think readers will appreciate learning about the factions and the rules that govern survival in these slower chapters as well. The worldbuilding was another strength of the book. I felt like I was moving along with James through the white desert, the frozen lake, the tower, the market, and the wasteland with the black orbs. These vivid encounters and descriptions really brought out Kim’s fantasy elements.

The atmosphere and the emotional tension worked well, especially when you see how much the Flowering has changed James. His conversation with Heri provided the perfect example of this. The only thing I thought didn’t work as well were the heavy terms and explanations in the dialogue. It slowed down some of the moments for me so that I could grasp the understanding at times. But it did not keep me from staying invested in the growing mystery of the narrative.

In my opinion, Kim did a great job creating immersive scenes. She especially did well, making scenes feel strange and threatening. Eye in the Blue Box is an enjoyable modern fantasy, with strong mystery elements and hidden worlds. There’s plenty of action and emotional scenes as well. Readers who would enjoy this story the most are those who’ve enjoyed similar works like Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea. Eye in the Blue Box is an ambitious start to Ann Yihyang Kim’s series.

I had an amazing time reading Ann Yihyang Kim's Eye in the Blue Box: Book One. Normally a sci-fi reader, this was my first foray into the dark fantasy genre. It was quite a plunge, but this book really drew me in from the first chapter. The book plunges you directly into the mystery and action and slowly reveals piece by piece how James learns about the Flowering, his crew, and the many threats all around them.

As a fellow Asian American, I really connected with the inner struggles that the main character, James feels. I even cringed at his thoughts and actions around his family, knowing that I have made many of those same mistakes myself. I appreciated seeing his progression and growth of through the book, even looking forward to Book Two to see how he continues to grow.

For the other supporting characters, I appreciated how Kim took the stereotypical personalities (tough leader, affable friend, out to prove something female, helpful animal) and gave them enough quirks and mystery to make them feel unique, even adding twists to their back stories to make you care and wonder how they came to be in the Flowering as well.

The action sequences are extremely well written, drawing you in so that your mind can see each slice, flip, and cut as they happen. Some of the gore can be a bit much for younger readers, but it is not done needlessly or gratiutously as it is part of the plot and mechanics of how this fantasy world operates. In fact, there are times when the action helps show character growth or provides pivotal plot points that can leave the reader hanging.

I look forward to reading Book Two as I really need to know how things get resolved. I hope there will be subsequent books that dive into some of the back stories of the supporting characters as there is so much left unexplained that makes a reader wonder how they came to be.

Imagine your ordinary life cracking, then being pulled into a world that obeys no rules you understand. James lives on autopilot, work, dinner, sleep, until something small and wrong fractures his reality, pulling him into The Flowering, a realm where sleep is survival, the moon guards city gates, and bodies and souls no longer align.

This novel thrives in its tension between the real and the surreal. James is grounded and deeply relatable, which makes the grotesque and uncanny moments hit harder. The writing mirrors this pull, immersive, descriptive passages punctuated by sharp, staccato sentences that echo the story’s constant push and pull between control and collapse.

The worldbuilding is vivid, ritualistic, and unforgettable. Lapis Lazuli, its solstice-bound inhabitants, and the dreamlike rules of The Flowering linger in your mind like a half-remembered fever dream. Horror appears deliberately and with purpose. The infamous eye in the blue box unsettles, terrifies, and forces movement rather than cheap shock. Shadowed spiritual undertones, astral displacement, liminal existence, and bodies and souls out of sync add depth and unease that lingers long after the last page.

The pacing inside The Flowering is relentless and cinematic, though some sequences emphasise James’ transformation more than forward narrative momentum. Subtle Korean cultural textures and quiet, human beats anchor the story, giving the surreal stakes and emotional weight. The ending, while thematically solid, feels quieter than I wanted. It confirms rather than detonates, but the journey remains compelling and original.

Eye in the Blue Box is not here to comfort you. It is strange, liminal, and haunting. It refuses to leave your mind. With sharper narrative flow and a punchier ending, this series has the potential to become something exceptional.

In Eye in the Blue Box, Author Kim invites those who read to experience her worlds, real and surreal, with a unique lucidity. From following characters I am convinced I have met in real life to being able to clearly picture the dream-scapes from The Flowering that could not possibly exist on Earth, I felt like I was transported into Kim's universe from the start. She has the ability to convey such real, gritty human experiences through convincing character interactions and fantastic world jumping/car chase/high octane drama alike.

There are no one-dimensional characters in the main cast. While it takes some time to acclimate to the crew, everyone has a real personality, complex motivation, and depth to explore. It was a hard earned reward in the midst of various chapters of strife and drama to get to peel back another layer of each member to see what makes them tick and watch them slowly meld into an actual team.

Mostly, I enjoyed the read and was hard pressed to put down this book. I relished the nail-biting tension as thrilling fights ensued, marveled at both the compelling and sometimes macabre world building, and simply could not get enough of the best boy Bloom!

Overall 3.75/5. Thankyou Library Thing and Ann Yihyang Kim for this ARC and below is my review.

Eye in the Blue Box leans confidently into the traditions of fantasy, and that is one of its strengths. Like many classic fantasy stories, it weaves together familiar tropes such as found family and questing, which give the narrative a comforting structure while still allowing room for originality. The writing itself is strong and thoughtful, with vivid descriptions and a clear sense of purpose guiding the story forward ✨

That said, the book did not fully resonate with me on a personal level. I struggled to connect with the main character, which made it harder to feel emotionally invested in the journey and the story felt a bit too surreal and gruesome for my tastes. While I can appreciate the artistic intent behind this portrayal, the tone occasionally crossed into territory that pulled me out of the story rather than drawing me deeper.

Overall, Eye in the Blue Box is a well written fantasy novel that will likely appeal to readers who enjoy darker, more surreal elements alongside classic fantasy themes. While it was not entirely to my personal taste, it is clear that the book has merit and a distinct voice.

What a wild ride! Kim’s debut novel is a thrilling adventure packed with striking, surreal imagery and visceral action scenes. The concept of trying to survive in a hostile dream world is intriguing, and the world of the Flowering is complex and mysterious. One of my favorite aspects of the novel is the vivid description of the grotesque creatures and Dali-esque landscapes of the Flowering.

The adrenaline-filled scenes in the Flowering are interspersed with slower-paced scenes in the real world that I found very relatable as an Asian-American. In fact, I would have loved to see a bit more of James’ life in the real world and his real-world relationships.

The cast of characters is also interesting and likable. The main character James starts out whiny and immature, but I really loved seeing him grow as a person and strengthen his bond with the rest of Crew Blue. The rest of the crew is also fantastic, and I loved seeing their interactions and learning their backstories.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next installment!

Is there any particular nightmare you wish you never remembered? There was a period of my life when I had vivid nightmares every so often. Some were movie-like and I was glad I could remember them so I could tell my friends about them. Others, man, I wish I could wipe out of my floppy disk of a brain. So, when I read the tagline “No dreams. Just Nightmares” something in me became most intrigued.

The dream world meticulously built by Ann is introduced and explained gradually. It was really fun and exciting to discover, along with James, every new piece of information about it revealed by Lux and the others. I wanted to know more about the world itself and about the characters.

The action scenes are so well written, with just enough details allowing the reader to visualize everything that is happening without having too much text to overwhelm or distract from the important parts. They also do not feel like they drag on for too long. Just enough to keep the reader engaged.

Not only does Ann’s writing flow so smoothly, the characters are depicted as relatable and realistic. They sometimes remind me partly of myself and of people I have met. So, please do not be mistaken. The story is not only about fantastic happenings in the realm of dreams. It is a well-balanced combination of fantasy adventure in the “dream world” and “real life” human issues in the “real world”: inner turmoil, personal struggles, failure, resilience, and personal growth, among many other life lessons.

All in all, I am looking forward to reading more about this world. And, please remember to sleep at least eight hours per day. Sleep IS vital!

I loved this book. The author paints each scene with such vivid detail that it often feels like stepping into a Dali landscape, surreal, dreamlike, yet full of energy. The imagery alone makes the story stand out, but what impressed me most was how carefully thought out every scene was. Nothing felt rushed or random; each chapter flowed naturally into the next while still leaving me wanting more.

The pacing was spot on, action packed without sacrificing depth. At times, it was like watching a movie unfold in my mind, and honestly, if they ever adapt this into film, I would be first in line. The characters themselves were varied, layered, and endlessly interesting, each one adding something unique to the storyline.

Overall, this book is a masterful blend of surrealism, imagination, and pure storytelling skill. A must read if you love stories that are both visually striking, action packed, and and emotionally engaging.

I thoroughly enjoyed Eye in the Blue Box. The world of the Flowering is both intriguing and dangerous. What I enjoyed most was the author's use of violence when James is within the Flowering because on the one hand violence is far more common place but the stakes have shifted repercussions (though still dangerous) are delayed. Reading how James adapts to the strange rules of the Flowering and the toll it takes on both the citizens and people who find themselves making the nightly trip there engaging. Within the Flowering people can recover from lethal and fatal situations as long as they are rendered help but still face death via sleep loss as a result. This aspect of the Flowering allows some characters to take novel approaches to conflict and leads to some interesting alliances.

I only wish the Eye in the Blue Box was longer as I feel the setting has a lot more to offer. Fortunately this is book 1 of a series so I will not have to wait long for more.

If you’ve ever wished you could use your sleeping hours for something more productive, this story delivers. The main character, James is pulled into a dream world filled with violence, horror, and constantly shifting realities that he must quickly learn to navigate.

As the story unfolds, we follow James forming relationships with his Crew while struggling to balance how his dream life impacts his waking one. Ann Yihyang Kim does a great job capturing his confusion and emotional journey through this mysterious and expansive world she has created.

I especially enjoyed the creature design. The monsters reminded me of the “Heartless” from Kingdom Hearts, with their humanoid, suffering presence.

At times, the pacing slowed due to repeated or over-explained details. While the relational conflicts were interesting, the dialogue often lacked emotional depth, which made it harder to fully connect with the characters.

Overall, I’m glad I read it, though I don’t plan to pick up the sequel right away.

The short version of this review is: go read the book; it’s really good. You won’t be disappointed. 10/10.

Now the longer version. If you’ve read either of Ann’s published short stories (if you haven’t, go read them immediately), The Train or Harvest, you know you’re in for a treat with her debut novel. Her writing transports you fully into the novel’s world, full of descriptive prose and incredible attention to detail. Her characters are fully imagined, complex, with rich backstories and compelling development. The plot is well-paced and gripping; there isn’t a dull moment to be found or the need to skim pages. From start to finish the book is an epic journey, leaving the reader wanting more (good thing there’s a book 2!). So excited for everyone to discover this book and for future stories from Ann!

Eye in the Blue Box is a refreshingly original dark fantasy that swaps romantic entanglements for raw survival, surreal landscapes, and reluctant heroism. Ann Yihyang Kim crafts a vividly unsettling dreamworld equal parts mystical and nightmarish where every sleep becomes a battle for sanity. James Mun’s sardonic, comfort-loving personality provides the perfect contrast to the chaos he’s thrown into, making his growth both gripping and rewarding. With inventive creatures, kinetic combat, and emotional depth rooted in family and cultural identity, this is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy who are tired of the same old tropes.

Startled and thrown off kilter as Eye in the Blue Box pulled me through strange and unsettling realities to land in "The Flowering" along with James. I am a regular listener to mystery/thriller audio dramas, especially enjoying thoughtful world building. The unique and puzzling properties of this alternate world drew me in as James learned to cope with them, and began to bond with his crew. I would recommend this to anyone looking to for an intriguing read.

This book really stayed with me.

Eye in the Blue Box pulled me in quietly, and before I knew it, I was completely absorbed. There’s something deeply emotional and almost dreamlike about the writing that made me slow down and actually feel the story, not just read it.

I found myself thinking about the characters even after I put the book down, which doesn’t happen often. It felt personal, reflective, and a little haunting in the best way.

A beautiful and memorable start to the series—I’m genuinely excited to see where it goes next.

Haunting... in the best way. Juggling an upcoming wedding and international move this fall, I aimed to read only one chapter with my very limited time... but somehow kept turning the page as Ann's writing engrosses the reader and pulls you into another dimension you don't want to leave. The plot is captivating and blurs the lines between the world we know vs. a dream world that haunts you in your daily life and questions how you view reality. Highly recommend!

We all dream and sometimes we have nightmares. This book takes dreams/nightmares to a new level.

The events that take place happen so fast it’s hard to catch you breath.

The authors writing style beautifully describes the people, places and action that takes place in this dream land.

This is this wonderful book.

Fantasy like this isn’t really my style, but this one I really liked. There were parts when there was so much action I could not put the book down. It does end on a cliffhanger which makes me want to read the next one. The only other thing is I am not really sure why they have missions and James just accepts that so easily. Maybe it will be explained more in the next book.

What an engaging read! What starts off as a mundane evening for James turns into a mysterious, action-packed adventure - many times intense and heart-pounding, but not without deeply heartfelt moments.

I am amazed by how Ann Yihyang Kim effortlessly paints countless unique worlds that no eye has ever seen. Through these strange and bizarre dream lands, our heroes journey through and encounter creatures both friend and foe, and I felt like I was right there amidst Crew Blue. This is the kind of read that keeps you immersed even after you close the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wild ride. Even though I am not a great reader this was definitely a page-turner. Highly recommend!!
