When the Cowboys Are Hot but the Plot Has Left the Rodeo 🤠
STORY
My first read by Leigh Morgan, and apparently only the author’s second book. I’m a sucker for cowboy romances, especially when they’re on the darker side, so I went into this one with high hopes. I guess I was expecting something along the lines of Raya Morris Edwards’ Sovereign Mountain series.
Well… let’s just say this was NOT the rodeo I signed up for. 🤠
The first chapter was genuinely promising. I was intrigued, excited, and ready for a deliciously dark cowboy romance. But then? Insta-lust, rodeo circuit after rodeo circuit, everyone being the absolute best at everything, and banging. Lots and lots of banging.
Where’s the actual plot? The emotional depth? The character development?
CHARACTERS
Dean is supposedly our dark, morally gray cowboy, but honestly, morally gray is already a generous description. And the reason he cut off contact with his family for YEARS? Ridiculously stupid. I was expecting some devastating family secret, not something that made me question everyone’s common sense.
And then there’s our FMC. Oh boy.
Her inner monologues try SO hard to make her appear deep, complex, and emotionally layered, but instead, they just become increasingly annoying.
And don’t even get me started on that forced third-act breakup!
She finds out she’s pregnant, misinterprets something he said, dumps him over it, and then goes out drinking and flirting with other men. All this shortly after telling him she loves him!
The entire conflict feels manufactured, unjustified, and completely unnecessary. Apparently, communication is an endangered species in this particular rodeo.
WRITING
I can forgive a predictable storyline. I can even forgive a ridiculous amount of smut if there’s enough chemistry and emotional substance to balance it out.
But this feels like a collection of spicy scenes loosely connected by rodeo competitions and unnecessary drama.
And the constant attempts to convince me these characters are emotionally complex aren’t helping. Show me the depth. Don’t just keep telling me it’s there.
SPICE
There’s certainly no shortage of it. Unfortunately, more spice doesn’t automatically mean a better romance.
And Daddy kink is one of my biggest turnoffs, especially when the characters are still young. So every time that particular word makes an appearance, another little piece of my reading enthusiasm dies.
CURRENT THOUGHTS — 70%
Here’s how well this book is working for me: By 30%, I actually had to start another book just to give myself a break!
I’m now at 70%, and instead of being desperate to find out what happens next, I’m wondering whether I even want to finish.
Maybe I’ll push through the remaining 30%. Maybe I’ll finally accept that not every cowboy deserves to be ridden into the sunset.
