The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.

His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.

Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.

He also has works published under his real name.

Alice in Wonderland has been banned in the US in the 1960s for drugs use and talking animals (an “offense to God”), and in the 1900s for allegedly promoting inappropriate/promiscuous behavior as well as banned in 1931 China for the talking animals (offensive for putting animals on the same level of importance as humans).

Personally, I don’t understand any of the reasons besides drug use- the caterpillar does use a hookah and the nonsensical nature of the story itself seems like it was written under the influence.

I purchased the book this special edition includes lots of odd illustrations that almost intrigued me more than the story itself! The cover is absolutely gorgeous and it comes with a built-in ribbon bookmark, which I didn’t realize how much I missed in books!

Such a beautiful edition.

I realised upon starting this that I’m not sure I’ve ever actually read Alice in Wonderland before, which was a surprise!

Such incredible skill from Carroll as he flits between prose and poetry with such ease. The degree of imagination to create as many unique scenarios and characters as he does is impressive. Let alone being able to depict them without it becoming overstimulating or confusing.

Such a special story, such a classic, such a wonderland.
