A second chance at love, just in time for Christmas.

When Jess calls off her wedding just weeks before the big day, she flees to the coastal village of Sturcombe Bay. Trading wedding plans for Christmas chaos at the fading Carleton Hotel, the last thing she expects is Paul Channing — a rugged local man with an easy charm and captivating smile.

Shelley has learned to keep everyone at arm’s length. But when Canadian pilot Daniel Crocombe steps in to protect her at work, his quiet kindness begins to break through her walls. As Christmas draws closer, Shelley must decide if she dares to believe in love at last.

Widow Kate finds comfort running her seaside café, while Mike, also grieving a loss, devotes himself to the Carleton Hotel. But when a ballroom dance lesson brings them together, one small step rekindles laughter, hope . . . and an unexpected spark.

As fairy lights twinkle across Sturcombe Bay and snow falls on the shore, three couples face their pasts — and discover that love has a way of finding you when you least expect it.

I'm a Londoner, though now I live in Devon, a twenty-minute walk from the sea. I love nothing more than walking my pretty Cavapoo on the beach in the rain (well, OK, I don't object to the sun, but when it's raining we usually have the whole beach to ourselves.)

Back in the day I had 25 novels published by Mills&Boon. After a long gap doing other things I found my love of writing again, and self-published three new novels.

But I knew that to reach more readers I needed an established publisher. Step in Joffe Books. They were top of my list so I was delighted when they accepted the first novel I sent them.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

This is the third book in the Sturcombe Bay series but is the first one I read. It was a slow start since there were a lot of characters to get acquainted with but once I got a hang of who's who, it was an enjoyable read. The book, with a lovely cover picture, had all the tropes for a feel good Christmas romance and I loved the setting of Sturcombe Bay, with the iconic Carleton Hotel at the center of it.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Joffe Books/ Choc Lit and the author Susanne McCarthy for the digital ARC of the book.

This was my first trip to Sturcombe Bay and I loved every minute of it!

I love the chaos that comes with the countdown to Christmas and there was plenty of that to be had at the Carleton Hotel.

The tropes were out in full force...small town romance, friends to lovers, second chance...

It's a sweet festive story sprinkled in Christmas magic and full of warm fuzzy feels. The characters were extremely likeable and I enjoyed how their stories intertwined and came together.

An enjoyable little read.

I'm back with the third book in the Sturcombe Bay Romance series, having read book 2 back in June.

I haven't managed to catch up with book 1 yet,  but once again, this reads perfectly well as a standalone read, although we do meet some returning characters during this read.

This story was quite different to my first, but that's because instead of focussing on just the one couple, here we follow 3 different couples whose lives connect through the community and work.

It was a little tricky to get used to at first as we were meeting multiple characters all at once, but once I settled into the storyline, it was a great way to follow each couple and enjoy their Christmas stories.

I loved how each of the characters had a special memory from the past that linked them to the Carleton and this fueled their need to show it some care - I could totally see this community rallying round to make this happen.

It was lovely being back in Sturcombe - the descriptive writing transported us right back to this seaside town and I have to say, I love the serenity that this held out of the summertime.

Another great read and I really must get round to catching up with book 1 soon!

When I started this book I didn’t realise it was book 3 in the series, I found the amount of characters at the start a bit overwhelming and confusing as I couldn’t keep up with who was married to who and who lived where. However, the majority of these characters weren’t the main ones the book concentrates on and were from previous books ( which if I’d read them I would be familiar with and welcome the brief reintroduction as a memory jogger!).

It did take some perseverance on my part, but once all the main characters for this book were in the play I really enjoyed the multi character storylines. There was a lot going on and I found it really interesting, and in a hotel that size and friendship group, there would be a lot going on, so it was very realistic.

I liked Alex and his quiet and calm approach to Shelley, they are perfect for each other. Kate and Mike were a nice older addition, love after tragedy, Their story was beautiful and I look forward to seeing them again working in the cafe. Paul and Jess were interesting, the playboy fell first and fell hard, I liked that.

A really nice Christmas read which has peaked my interest to read the previous books and future books.

This was a very enjoyable read, and I love the story. The concept is strong and ticked my festive read boxes. I loved the festive cover. The colours were great and eye-catching. I thought the book was written well and flows perfectly. I loved the descriptions of the village as winter was approaching!! The setting was mesmerising. I love Sturcombe Bay and I enjoyed my visit again! The book follows three pairs: Jess & Paul, Shelley & Daniel and Kate & Mike. They were all great characters, and I enjoyed seeing their stories unfold. I loved Daniel's grandad, Arthur. The epilogue for him at the end had me in tears! I do recommend the book and the series!!

This book was a cute Christmas romance that follows multiple love storylines. I enjoyed reading it, but it didn’t pull me in quite as much as the previous one in the series.

Just like book two (maybe even a bit more so), the ending felt rushed and seemed to skip over a significant chunk of time, which didn’t really match the pacing of the rest of the story. Still, the storylines were sweet, and I’d definitely recommend it as a cozy Christmas read.

Here is my review for Christmas At Sturcombe Bay by Susanne McCarthy

I totally enjoyed this beautifully crafted Christmassy Sturcombe Bay romance story which was so easy to read and I found it very uplifting. There were three threads making up the main story. There was Jess who had found her fiance had been cheating on her a month before the wedding so she came down to be with her sister and got a job as a receptionist at the fading but charming Carleton Hotel. Then Shelley who had moved around foster carers as a child so this was the longest she had stayed in one place and called it home. She liked her job cleaning the rooms but she was shy and didn’t like talking about her past. Kate liked running her seaside cafe and had been friends with Mike and his wife for years so she understood that he was grieving for her. She was so happy when he asked her to go ballroom dancing like they used to do in the old days as a foursome. Mike was so encouraging on their first time when she fumbled her steps but she felt so comfortable in his arms and when he asked ‘same time next week?’, she couldn’t have been happier. This story was expertly written and really well thought out with interesting characters that interacted and were so realistic it was like I was there in Sturcombe Bay! It was brilliantly plotted and the story flowed extremely well. It was a riveting story and I found it was impossible to put the book down as I wanted to carry on reading! I really enjoyed the storyline. The story was very descriptive and everything is described in detail. I got into the story as soon as I started reading it. I’m finding this is a brilliant series with lovely characters and this book is a superb addition to it. I'm already looking forward to the next book.

This is a such a sweet read, and I just adore the community feeling that the author has created around Sturcombe Bay. The sense of fellowship between the inhabitants is delightful to immerse yourself in. This book centres around three budding romances - Jess and Paul, Shelley and Alex, and Kate and Mike. I loved the gentle, mature way that Kate and Mike's relationship develops - their fears and tentative hopes for the future really resonated with me. Shelley and Alex's unlikely friendship is sensitively handled - will Shelley's insecurities allow her to accept the blossoming feelings she has for Alex? Help comes along in form of a gorgeous, goofy giant puppy called Tyler - who in my opinion steals every scene he's in!

Most of this book gave me the warm fuzzies. But I just couldn't connect with Jess and Paul as a couple and this took some of the shine off for me. Jess's past experience with betrayal leaves her wary to trusting another man again, but to me she is far too mercurial a character to elicit such strong feelings in Paul so quickly. The chemistry between the two doesn't quite ring true to me. Paul is amazingly patient, even when Jess is repeatedly downright rude to him. But this is a romance after all - do such accepting men exist in real life?

I loved the fact that the three romances develop in and around the efforts to save the old hotel, a fixture of the community. The back story there really makes the plot come alive with an extra dimension.

With a cast of cheeky supporting characters which includes one special crazy mutt, this novel really evokes a cosy, Christmassy feel. So nice - but with a touch of spice included when you least expect it, just the right amount of naughty as well.

Thanks to Joffe Books for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

There’s something magical about returning to a place you’ve already fallen in love with, and Christmas at Sturcombe Bay gave me that exact feeling. From the very first page, it felt like coming home, not just to South Devon, but to the warm and welcoming community that Susanne McCarthy has created so vividly.

This story picks up beautifully where Coming Home to Sturcombe Bay left off, and it was such a joy to spend more time among familiar faces while meeting new characters who quickly found their way into my heart. I adore how the author brings so many threads and lives together, weaving a story that feels layered and alive. Each character has purpose, each moment matters, and it makes the village feel wonderfully real.

I’ll admit, I was flying through the book at first—completely engrossed—until I realised I was already halfway through. At that moment, I had to make myself slow down. I wanted to savour every detail, every heartwarming scene, because I knew I’d be sad to leave Sturcombe Bay when I turned the final page.

While this could absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone, there’s a special richness in having followed the series from the start. The continuity, the relationships, and the sense of community all deepen with each book. The writing is spot-on, the pacing perfect, and the balance of festive charm, emotion, and romance made this an utter delight to read.

Christmas at Sturcombe Bay is the kind of book that fills you with warmth, joy, and the spirit of togetherness. I loved every moment, and I can’t wait to return to this gorgeous seaside village again.

When Jess calls off her wedding to her serial cheating fiance she runs to her sister for support and finds a job and an admirer but is she ready for a new romance?
Shelley has spent her entire life in multiple foster homes & on the streets at times.
For 3 years now shes had a steady job and made friends working at the hotel as a chambermaid, she meets a visitor to the hotel and there is an instant attraction but how can it go anywhere ?
Mike has spent 30 years working at the hotel as its manager but has been unsettled for 2 years after losing his wife and the hotel is being run down by investment companies who buy it but then sell it on.
He decides to go to dance classes again and asks his wife's best friend whose husband was his best friend and died many years earlier. Is there a spark or is it just him and is he ready?.
The prospective partners are Alex a Canadian ex fighter pilot visiting his grandpa but hiding his background from Shelley. Paul an ex professional football player turned pundit but has other little known investment opportunities.
Kathy owns the local cafe with her daughter helping & she in turn helps look after her granddaughter, but has become bored lately and still misses her husband.
The way these stories and characters evolve is truly magical. I loved this book and intend to read the other 2, though this works as a standalone. 6 stars from me.

Raise your hand if you didn’t know this was Book 3 of a series. Which is why it’s so worth giving a story a chance. When I first started reading, I honestly felt like there were too many storylines—it was a bit confusing at first. But I decided to stick with it, and I’m so glad I did! By the end, I absolutely loved it.

When Jess catches her fiancé sexting other women (ouch 😬), she leaves him and heads to Sturcombe Bay to visit her sister. There, she takes a job at a hotel until she decides what to do next—and that hotel becomes the real heart of the story. The way the town comes together to save it gave me all the cozy, small-town Christmas feels.

There are several interwoven stories from the people in town, each adding warmth and depth. But let’s talk about the main couple—Jen and Paul. Holy chemistry! ❤️ Their banter, their connection, their slow burn… perfection. And what I especially loved? The romances in this book aren’t heavy with unnecessary drama. They’re sweet, genuine, and full of heart—like a big warm hug.

Except Jess and Paul—they’re like fireworks 💥 and I was so here for it!

If you love small-town Christmas romances with charm, heart, and a touch of holiday magic, definitely give Christmas at Sturcombe Bay a try. Cozy, heartfelt, and full of community spirit—this one surprised me in the best way.

This was a cute Christmas read and perfect for the holiday season! The story is three separate romances and I enjoyed all of them.

Jess is new in town. She has come to stay with her sister for a bit to get back on her feet after leaving her fiance. She was great, but she is off men. Especially men like her ex....which is what Paul seems to be. Paul grew up here and is back in town and intrigued by Jess. He was never one for super serious, but will Jess change that?

Shelley has had a rough go of it and she finally has a bit of stability, though she knows things can change in an instant. She doesn't want to get involved with anyone either. She just wants to keep her head down and do her job. That is until Daniel shows up. Daniel who is super sweet and kind and interested in Shelley.

Then there is Kate and Mike, an older couple. Both lost their partner and have been friends forever. They were super sweet and probably my favorite of the three couples.

All three couples were great and I really enjoyed reading this one. This was the first by this author, but I now I think I should go back and read the prior books in the series as I loved the small seaside town. All the characters, even the side characters, were great and I would love to see more!

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for a copy of this book

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and what a wonderful and warming read it was.

Revolving around Jess, a woman who after discovering a shocking secret calls off her wedding just weeks before the day, and Shelley, a young woman who has her own secrets to hide, this book has everything in it needed to make you read it with a warm fuzzy glow. The settings of both Sturcombe and the Charleston Hotel make for a wonderful backdrop to, at times, misunderstandings between Jess and Paul, and the way Daniel slowly breaks down the barriers of the shy, quiet Shelley. I loved the way how, by including the stories of the hotel’s previous life and the people who have such fond memories of the hotel, I really felt like I was there with them all.

Although Christmas at Sturcombe Bay is the third in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. However, I loved this book so much, I know I’ll be returning to Sturcombe Bay to read the first two books by Susanne. Ideally, curled up on a sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in my hand.

How gorgeous is the cover art, the colours immediately attracted me to it. Of course I was aware of Sturcombe Bay having read book 2 a few months ago. This is book 3 and its set at Christmas, my favourite, yay!
It was lovely to see some of the characters from book 2 (and probably book 1 but I haven't read that yet) and get an update on where they are at.
This book centred around 2 couples and gave viewpoints from the 2 men and 2 women involved. At the start, having 4 people's viewpoints did feel a little confusing, once I got to grips with who everyone was, and how they fit in to the wider Sturcombe world it was a much better read.
I absolutely loved Tyler, stick a dog in a book and its almost always a special one!
I loved how the author addressed some serious topics in among the lighthearted story. Dyslexia, adverse childhood experiences, and cheating were just part of what gave this story a real full feeling.
It was super easy to pass a few hours with this not realising how much you were reading.
I hope there is more to come from Sturcombe.

I really enjoyed this cozy holiday read. It takes place in a charming seaside town and follows several characters whose lives are all connected through the local hotel and café. There’s a lot going on, but once I got into the rhythm of the story, I found myself completely drawn in.

Jess leaves her cheating fiancé and heads to Sturcombe Bay to stay with her sister. She’s not looking for love, but ends up meeting Paul. Their relationship had a nice build. Shelley, who works at the hotel, has her own quiet storyline with Alex, and I found their scenes really sweet. There’s also a lovely older couple, Mike and Kate.

The book has multiple romances, but they’re all gentle and heartfelt. It’s not overly dramatic just real people trying to move forward and find happiness. The hotel setting gave it a festive feel, and the community spirit made it even more special.

Even though this is book three in a series, I had no trouble following along. It works well on its own, but now I’m curious to read the earlier books too.

Christmas at Sturcomb bay is a really cute little Christmas themed romance.

The story follows three different couples. I love it when we have different friendships and get to see the characters have different relationships throughout a book. However, I did find the jump from each chapter between the different characters and trying to follow all three couples a tad overwhelming in one book for me personally. I tend to prefer the main characters have their own individual book as I find it easier to fully emerge into it. I found I couldn't really relate to any of the characters for this reason.

If you like a book that follows multiple couples and is also a cosy holiday read then I am sure you will love this book. Just unfortunately I couldn't connect with it.

Thank you so much Netgalley and Joffe Books for the ARC of this holiday romance.

Three couples, amidst all the other returning characters from previous books, were just too many. It was distracting to move from each one and trying to remember what had happened with them.

I found Jessie a miserable and aggressive woman. She was rude and unpleasant to Paul for absolutely no good reason. I could not understand why he stayed interested. Even at the when she’d misjudged him so badly- he made excuses for her. I disliked her.

Shelley was a timid, miserable and unbelievable character. I think Alex should have just given up on her. Her transformation lacked credibility. . Someone so damaged by her past would not be transformed at the age of 25 by someone loving her, sadly.

The other couple Mike and Kate were neglected and kind of fell off the radar. Was that because they were a token older couple?

Christmas at Sturcombe Bay
by Susanne McCarthy

This was my first experience reading work by Susanne McCarthy, and I found it to be a delightful exploration of romance set against the festive backdrop of Sturcombe Bay. The story weaves together multiple love storylines centred around three main characters: Jess, Shelley, and Kate, each navigating their own romantic journeys during the holiday season.

At the beginning, I found the sheer number of characters a bit overwhelming and confusing. It was challenging to keep track of their connections and backstories. However, as I immersed myself in the stories and spent more time with the characters, I discovered a heartwarming tale filled with charm, humour, and emotional depth. By the end, I truly enjoyed the book and appreciated how each character’s storyline intertwined, ultimately leading to a satisfying conclusion.

I greatly enjoyed this third visit to Sturcombe Bay. This time, the plot is centred around the local hotel where some of the characters work, and we have three couples getting together so there's obviously a lot of romance too. I was always looking forward to finding out what happened next for each of the six characters whose points of view alternate, and of course it was nice to see those of the previous books again.
For readers who haven't met the inhabitants of Sturcombe Bay yet, starting with book 1 then reading the other two not too long after would probably be better to reduce the risk of getting some members of the main families mixed up, but if you're not afraid of meeting all of them at once, go ahead - this story works all by itself.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It’s not often that I say this but I feel this would’ve been better as a movie.
It didn’t really give me alot of Christmas vibes which i found sad.
In the beginning I was just confused.
There were a lot of characters a lot of POV’s and a lot of stories.
I kept forgetting who was who and had something going on with whom.
The further I got it did became more clear and more enjoyable.
But overall it was for me to many different characters and not enough background and built for some of the characters and their love story.

I did found out it’s apparently part of a series.
I didn’t feel like I missed things but maybe if I did the others first I would’ve been a bit less confused with all the characters.

I loved this book, which is a delightful story of romantic involvements in a small south coastal town in Devon, where several interwoven stories of girl meets boy are developing in the lead up to Christmas.

Two of the girls have had difficult pasts and find it very hard to trust their feelings for new loves, whilst another couple have long been friends but are now exploring deeper possibilities.

The backdrop of the historical hotel set above the town and the beach is skilfully made key to much of the novel.

Although the latest in a series, it is also complete in its own right and stands well alone.

Three romances in one book make this a very enjoyable Christmas read . This was a lovely uplifting read that enraptured a Christmas romance . Jess is looking to escape from a relationship and heads to Sturcombe Bay to visit her sister ,finds a part time job at the Carleton Hotel and the last thing on her mind is getting involved with anyone romantically . The story also follows Shelley , an employee at the hotel who is frightened to make commitments and Kate who runs the local café is wondering whether a romance is possible after being widowed . The story flows effortlessly and it made for a lovely warm hearted read

Three romances are blooming in this gorgeous festive atmosphere. It centres around the hotel where a few of our characters are working. Sturcombe Bay is a small town where everyone knows one another and I absolutely adore the supportive community. It can be read as a standalone but you get a better feel for the characters by reading the previous books first. I wholeheartedly embraced the feelings and emotions in this book. There are quite a few different plot happenings which is a little confusing but I didn't mind because I just decided to enjoy each one individually. I would describe the book as a hug wrapped in Christmas paper.

Sturcombe has some new visitors over Christmas.
Jess has called off her wedding and plans to stay with her sister in Sturcombe where she finds work at the hotel and meets Paul Channing.
Shelley is wary and keeps away from most people but Alex has found a way around her when he saves her from a work situation.
While Kate a widow is wrestling with her conscience about falling for her best friend's husband after her passing.
Can any of these couples find love and hope again for the future?
If so Sturcombe is the place to find it.
A lovely, whimsical festive tale of love, loss and second chances.

Christmas at Sturcombe Bay by Susanne McCarthy was my first experience reading this author’s work and I hesitate to say that this book just didn’t move me for some reason. I couldn’t connect with the characters so it was a struggle to get through it. I don’t like to give negative reviews, most especially if I feel it’s my perception and I’m in the minority so I would most definitely suggest giving this one a try because you might enjoy it! If you like Christmas reads, I’m sure you will. I’m grateful to have been given the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book through NetGalley.

Jess has a need to escape from her old life, with everything going wrong she goes to Sturcombe Bay to hopefully start afresh. Will she find her happy ever after there? Also Shelley is quiet and shy until she meets Daniel can he help her to turn her life around? can the two women find love at Christmas when they least expect it. I like how the two women’s intertwine with each other. It is a slow burner of a story. I liked how the story flowed and to see the outcome at the end. It was a light hearted story that is full of friendship, romance and Christmas festivities.

It was lovely to be back in Sturcombe Bay, this is book 3 in the series, you can read them as a standalone but you’d miss out on a great series with great characters.
This book was like three stories in one, beautifully written I was transported back to the village, this time full of festive cheer and fun.
In this book we follow Jess & Paul, Shelley & Daniel and Kate & Mike again all wonderful characters, it was a heartwarming and uplifting read, I loved it!

Three romances, small town, slow burn, a pinch of spice… and Christmas! What more could you want in a book?!

Despite being book 3 in this series, this read well as a standalone, the only negative I had (and it’s probably me being picky) is that there were a lot of characters to wrap my head around in the beginning but despite this I was drawn to reading it constantly and raced through.
I loved the romances and how the characters intertwined with the heartwarming storyline of saving the hotel, this was just perfect for cozy evening reading.
I’ll definitely be picking up the first two ASAP

A Lovely Christmas Read

When Jess discovers her boyfriend has been cheating on her again she cancels their wedding and retreats to Sturcombe Bay where her twin sister lives. Unexpectedly she is offered a temporary job at the hotel which will tide her over and give her a place to live. The last thing she wants is a new romance, but fate soon intervenes. This is a lovely Christmas read or a good read at any time of the year.

A charming story of interwoven romances set in a Devonshire seaside town. Taste the cream teas!

The Carleton Hotel may be on its last legs, but it holds treasured memories for a host of people.
The main characters each have a different tale to tell, but all are entwined around the past and the future of the old building. In the lead up to Christmas, there are some sad reflections, some funny moments, and a few steamy scenes that make this easy read a great story.
