Thomas Murcher, a tough farmer in the Mississippi Territory, has no use for God till a Christian Choctaw saves his life and a preacher named Phineas leads him to faith. While he and Phineas struggle to bring the gospel to frontier Alabama’s inhabitants, a band of fanatical Creeks is determined to wage war on them and the settlers. Also, a murderous gang threatens their efforts to establish a church.
Annabelle Lawson, a gang member’s girl, scoffs at Thomas’s and Phineas’s preaching. But after her dramatic conversion, she falls in love with Thomas. However, Thomas’s shyness hinders him from developing a serious relationship with her.
Months later, the Creek War begins, and settlers flee into hastily built stockades. Annabelle, Thomas, and Phineas flee into one dubbed Fort Mims. A few weeks after their arrival, a thousand warriors attack it. Will Thomas and Annabelle live to see their destinies fulfilled, or will they perish in the fort’s horrible massacre?
Lovers of historical fiction can be finicky. Of course, they want a good story. They want relatable, believable characters. That’s a given. But deeper still, they want to travel back in time and literally experience what it was like to live in that era. To learn historical facts that they might not have otherwise ever known. That means well researched.
All of this and more is woven into this novel by Jack Cunningham, Frontier Circuit, A Story of the Creek War. Jack is well known for authoring historical fiction set in the deep South, which he knows well. Not only because he’s spent decades in that location, but also because he feasts on research. And it shows.
In this novel we have action, wars, romance, Indian lore, realistic characters, and yes, Christian themes adeptly woven in.
This is a page-turner, don’t-want-to-put-it-down novel. Grab your copy and enjoy the excitement.
Frontier Circuit is a fascinating dive into a pivotal time in history. The historical detail is rich and well-researched, and I found myself quickly pulled into the world the author recreated. The pacing kept things moving, making it a surprisingly fast and engaging read.
At times, I did feel a bit lost because of the large number of characters, which is why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5. Still, there were standout moments and figures that made the story especially memorable. One character who captured my attention was Annabelle—her complete turnaround from the first chapter to the last was captivating, and I enjoyed following her personal journey.
Overall, this is a compelling book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with depth and heart.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have read WWII, Revolutionary War, and Civil War stories over the years, but this novel of the Creek War showcased events in history with which I was not as familiar. The story takes readers deep into the conflicts that occurred not only between warring factions in American history but delves into the obstacles that preachers faced as they strove to share the gospel.
Frontier Circuit delivers an inspiring message of redemption and salvation in a well-crafted story. Page turning conflict plays out through the actions and emotions of realistic characters. Strong evidence of historical research enhances the book.
If you enjoy fiction based on historical fact, Frontier Circuit is a must read for you.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the author and this review reflects my honest opinion of the work.
A unique story! What struck me even in the opening pages was the feel of this book. I have read parts of Peter Cartwright's Autobiography, and this account of a circuit-riding minister rings true to the actual primary source documents.
The frontier of the opening of the 1800s was rough-and-tumble. And ministers faced this environment with tough, masculine courage, tempered with the love of the souls of the settlers. Add to that the opening of the Creek War. Nobody can make this stuff up. Forgotten history that needs to be remembered!
The author loves his subject, a history expert in Alabama, where the story is set. I received a free courtesy copy, but my views are my own.
Author Jack Cunningham’s comprehensive story of the Creek War in the early 1800s engaged me to the last page. His appealing prose brought historical events and personalities to life, allowing me to feel a part of that historical event. Cuningham’s impeccable research, vivid descriptions, and a strong chronological narrative make this a must-read book, especially for American history enthusiasts. Well done.
A story that brings history to life. Frontier Circuit delves not only into the Creek War, but provides a glimpse into the life of a circuit riding preacher. The author immerses us in the time period, creating characters that come to life. We experience their losses and triumphs, and feel the horror and devastation of the Fort Mims massacre.
This is a tale of war, prejudice, love, hope, and redemption. Highly recommend.
This author's writing is compelling! He makes history come alive while intertwining love and real life on every page. Warning: you'll stay up late reading this book! :)
I received an advance copy for which I am grateful!
I enjoyed learning some history (which I usually don't like to read). The book put things into perspective, yet made it very interesting reading the stories of people's lives and the conflicts they endured
