Oh was I excited to get back into this world! This book was delightful, charming, darling, cosy and all round sumptuous! This is whimsical regency with all the traipsing of magic. I adored the first 2 books in the series, all feature different MC'S from the same family. Every one a distinct personality. In a world where once their magic has manifested, there's a coming out of sorts, a ball to show their magic, a ball to find a life partner. But Aurelise would rather not take part in any of social dictates. She'd rather be as inconspicuous as possible, she's reserved and not a social butterfly in the slightest. She's anxious, socially awkward and loathes being in the spotlight. Yet she must, the season is about to start. And this season is different, it'll be held in the Dreamscape, beautifully brought "back to life" by Mariselle and Evryn.
This was the most adorable prologue I've read! Just after her 18th birthday, Aurelise's magic manifests but with it, a cacophony of unwanted "noise", her emotions triggering an onslaught for all to hear. Her refuge, her music, is now threatening to overwhelm her. So, feeling decidedly silly, she takes a step to try alleviate her distress by writing and placing a letter in an enchanted letter box her brother had purchased for her the previous year. To her utter amazement, she receives a response, from a real person no less, not an imaginary enchantment. So starts a series of communication, real, unfettered, honest. With each letter, the sides of my mouth involuntary tugged upwards and, before I knew it, I had a grin on my face from their correspondence. Shy, quiet, unassuming Aurelise can be herself while penning these letters. She's still sceptical as to the validity of "the recipient" but she's able to express herself, almost frivolously.
Ryden, the Prince, hides who he really is behind a strong facade. A suave, flirty facade. His magic is powerful, difficult to control and he's terrified of it's potency. But, he's quite the catch for the debutants and now, much to his distress, his mother insists he finds a bride. This season. His only pleasure are the letters and when they "dry up" my stomach twisted at his anguish! He is fantabulous! He is someone I feel to my core, as is Lise. I just wanted to wrap them in my arms and hug them! Perceptions, misconceptions, fear and acceptance are overcome, in the most glorious of ways. Ways that had me cheering, grinning and feeling extraordinarily sated!
Ms Morgan crafts the most gorgeous characters. They are real. They are flawed. They are just cool, like immensely comfortable friends. She knows how to spin a true friendship, such as Evryn and Ryden, supportive, genuine. I loved all these characters, they are as diverse as they are magical. Rossevyn is still a favourite of mine, I love her wit and snark. She definitely is not a conformist and that's what they all should be, playing it "safe" in society's eyes. The High Lady, imposing, intimidating, is another hiding her true self. Oh lordie, I could wax lyrical about each and every character, who are impossible to capture succinctly but they are amaaaazing! This author is amazing in her storytelling, the fullness of every word, every sentence, every dynamic has a clear purpose, that goes beyond mere exceptional storytelling.
The family dynamics are the sweetest, they are so protective of one another, caring for each other. The story focuses primarily on Aurelise and Ryden, while giving us more depth to the characters I came to love in the previous 2 books. Kazrian, Aurelise's twin, props her up time and time again. In fact, her entire family rallies round her, but her terror is palpable, her fear resonates from the pages. She's stuck, stuck on being chosen as one of the Crown Court, stuck in Solstice Hall, stuck in not knowing how to respond to R's letters, stuck in her overwhelming emotions, just stuck. I was as relieved as Lise with the kindness and friendship Willow extrended. It wasn't all doom and gloom for Lise though, she had the companionship of 2 very cute magical beings, Spark and Thimble. Throughout this read, the humour eased much of MY anxiety of the "will they, won't they, can they".
The author explored anxiety which borders on panic attack, very sensitivity. Realistically. Acknowledging it. Owning the fact that it does exist. With no judgement, only heart-warming prose. This book wrapped me tightly in it's grasp, like vines lovingly encasing me. When the bindings felt a bit tight, they relaxed, when the bindings were too slack, they hugged me. This book was so flipping hard to put down, in fact, I put my phone on silent so I wouldn't be distracted, I was enthralled, I was in blissful heaven reading this darling book. Though I thoroughly loved the previous 2 books, THIS one is my absolute favourite! Every once in a while I read a book that I literally want to hug, the warm and fuzzies that start in my toes, soon encompasses me entirely. Oh, and on a final note, I doubt I'll ever be able to look at a parsnip without giggling! I can't get enough of this series, I'll be waiting anxiously for the next one!
