“When Silence The Girl Who Knew Too Much” is the powerful true story of Gloria Velez , urban icon, mother, survivor.
From the shadows of family dysfunction and abuse to the dazzling chaos of the music industry, Gloria takes you on a raw, unfiltered journey through childhood trauma, betrayal, fame, heartbreak, and the quiet strength it took to survive it all. With unflinching honesty and emotional depth, she breaks her silence on the people, pain, and power structures that tried to shape her but never broke her.
This is more than a memoir.
It’s a warning.
It’s a weapon.
It’s a woman reclaiming her voice.
The girl they tried to erase is finally telling her story on her terms.
I felt like this was a captivating story of someone’s life. A glimpse into what made someone into who the world sees. All the things people outside the industry do not get to see. A reminder that what we see surface level isn’t all truth. There is every step that got a person to where they are.
It doesn’t matter the industry—bad people are everywhere. That being said, so are there good. As a mom of a girl, it breaks my heart to read what Gloria went through. Regardless of how she is now, you could never want your child to go through some of the things Gloria had to experience. However, it got Gloria to where she is, made her who she is now. And that seems to be a very strong woman, wonderful mom, and advocate for other women in the industry. I hope her story helps someone else looking to follow in her footsteps or might already find herself in similar shoes. To know what to look for and how to keep pushing.
Gloria is raw and honest. A wonderful writer, and I pray she continues to grow in that area of storytelling. Hope to see blessing upon blessings go her way.
I hope in the next two books that come out an editor fixes the formatting issues for the digital copy. There were quite a few words combined together without spaces and a few other times where things like sentences to complete paragraphs that were repeated on a couple of pages.
“The real ones, like James, show you love without taking something from you.”
*** It’s difficult to give anything but a 5 star review to anyone being so open and raw with their story; however there were some editing issues I hope to see corrected and why I’m only giving 4 stars. ***
I bought her book from finding out from the Vlad TV interview that’s she came out with one. AND let’s be real we always knew her as THAT GIRL in the video vixen era, among other ladies that deserved to be mentioned. They were like the super models of hip hop videos. Or as today considered those IG baddies/influencers My review is not based on it being bad but a couple of point I couldn’t give it a higher review: - there were soooooo many typos. Should’ve had some proof read or pasted on Chat GBT to correct - a lot of the self reflection pieces I did not enjoy because it was a lot of times a repeat from the other part of the chapter. - I enjoyed reading about how she grew up and her past but honestly, there was a lack of detail. I could feel her holding back on a lot which should’ve been mentioned and just like surprised the reader or keep them on the edge of their seat. Like some times the “but that is another story for another time” what???? This was the chance to talk about this. Not sure if there were NDA’s in place. But it was like your gf trying to tell you a story and then saying “ girl it’s a long story” like what? This is why I took the time to listen!! -I’m sure some stories were carry difficult and triggering to talk about, she really been through a lot. And yet she just looks strong and beautiful and is killing it, so I don’t regret buying the book. But it was lacking more, so I would’ve suggested another persons/ghost writer to write those difficult areas. And really get her to tell the full details and maybe keep her from shying away. - I loved the stories that I think she never said in interviews but still feel like there was a lot of fluff
