Great news, Team Tarot is off on another awesome adventure! This one will likely get us killed since it involves waltzing into the fabled Vampyre Court and challenging my mortal enemy to the pissing match to end all pissing matches.
Oh, by the way, did I mention that the Alchemist is actually my grandfather?
Which is really weird because his previous male meat suit finally gave out, and he’s now walking around inside Vakchos’s twin sister Verissa’s body. He’s also laid claim to her throne, giving him command of an army of undead a$$holes and access to vampire magic.
If that wasn’t just flipping fantastic enough, it turns out he’s trying to locate the source of all magic in the world, and since I’m the only one who can stop him, the fate of the entire magical world rests in my less-than-capable hands.
Hang on to your seats, folks, because this is shaping up to be one hell of a Shift Show!

Spoiler alert: this final book for the story arc is not the final book! Which is not much of a spoiler as spoilers go, so I won’t feel bad about it.
What I WILL tell, and without any spoilers, is that Mitchell stays true to form and this book outshines the rest in several ways. There are an enormous amount of “big reveals,” in this book, not just one. Off the top of my head, and without really counting (yet), I’m goin to say at least six if not seven big reveals take place… maybe more.
Because each of these take up so much emotional headspace, there is a significant drop in the amount of fun to be had, although when all else fails a certain rooster shows up to lighten the mood. I mean how can you ever go wrong with a rooster as your straight man? The answer is you really can’t.
Despite the emotional overhead and Rosario’s eternally comfortable safe space, Mitchell still manages to make the whole shebang feel utterly ridiculous in the best possible way, even when it isn’t. It’s a gift, I’m telling you now.
As with each of these preceding books, the membership of Danny’s team continues to grow. There are so many minor characters, each of whom has their own fully realized back story and history, that it’s honestly getting to be almost too many to keep track of. It’s part of the fun, but I have no idea how Mitchell juggles them all let alone manages to give each one a moment or two in the sun in every book.
And speaking of the team, our our guys ate all over the map in this installment… literally and figuratively, and by the end of the book, one might even say doggedly. Still, remarkably, they consistently manage to pull it all together, and Mitchell weaves all of these incoherent threads into a beautifully coherent storyline that is guaranteed to entertain.
In one respect, I was looking forward to reaching the resolution of it all, but in most respects I’m glad the ride has yet to end. This is chaos (all puns intended) at its very best. I can only hope that Danny and his group of miscreants have more stories to tell when this one is done.
Danny and the group have to fight their way through more tough situations. They have to leave part of their team behind as they make their way to the vampire realm. And when they get back Danny learns a secret that you didn’t see coming but probably should have!
