Ummmm I NEED MORE.

This volume had my beautiful wife Hatsume Mei in it, so of course it couldn’t be less than 5 stars.

Also Uraraka is soooo in love, I kept waiting for the class A girls to start singing “I won’t say I’m in love” from Hercules any second.

Man this manga is just too cool for this world.

Ugh. I’m starting to feel like the series jumped the shark during the summer camp arc. It’s another championship now, and it’s a far cry from the first one — there’s no tension, no sense of danger or competition. It’s dull and boring, and nothing in this storyline feels like it matters. The plot armor has grown around the entire UA High’s Class A, and it looks like Horikoshi is too afraid to take even the smallest risk with any of these characters. Give me my Uraraka-centered spin-off already and I will be okay with reading just that!

Love that Aoyama got a bit of a moment, even if it was teeny tiny. I've been even more obsessed with the more minor 1-A kids than I was before. Give my kids their time to shine! So much happened in this volume, that I feel like will definitely come back or be connected to a bigger plot.

I love it when they use their quirks together and protect each other. I think this might be one of my favorite parts. :')

You would think Horikoshit had learned by now that all his audience actually wants is to see some damn battles with villains, goddammit, but no, he was that incompetent he thought it wanted even more training arcs and even more minor character who don’t matter to the story getting introduced. The result was yet another training arc with absolutely none of the hype of the sport festival, since there was no huge crowd to cheer for them, and no overdramatic fleshing out of a specific character took place in it. It was completely boring, and Horikoshit became desperate enough to up the fan service by a few kilotons, so the readerbase won’t give up. Deku is now treated as a lead in a fighting harem. Several girls are hitting on him and he constantly falls on their boobs or sees them naked. Because that is what heroism is all about! We are exploring a theme here, people!

Still a very fun superhero manga. Off to compete for temporary superhero licenses! Only the not-useless will get through! :)

It’s fascinating to see the character and skill developments. They’ve all come a long way.

My review of My Hero Academia, Vol. 12, now also featuring a short essay on the Bakugo shipping debate: Why it's Not Wrong to Ship Katsuki Bakugo

The kids are now on the hunt for their provisional hero licenses, and have once again found themselves in a big insane competition against a bunch of other people (ala the UA entrance exam, but BIGGER). It seems pretty similar to that arc, but yenno I don't even mind because it's the same regular MHA goodness.

This arc reminded me of one of the really good things this series does. In books/series with shitty writing, whenever a character is introduced who is on an opposing side to the main character, they are written to be a black and white evil character, no questions asked. Since this arc is about a competition against other people, there's a TON of new characters who oppose our main cast. BUT! They are not blindly evil! Oh my god it feels like such an amazing breath of fresh air. Clearly I've been reading too many shit books.

This concept of differing views on "good/evil" is a huge theme in this series, and it's fantastic. From the whole Hero Killer debacle, and then again with the League of Villains attacking the kids at camp, this question of "What really makes a true hero?" acts as a heavy question that not only the characters but we as readers have to confront. I feel like it's presented pretty well, in that we can absolutely see where the villains are coming from. They're not evil and against the main cast just for the sake of being evil and against the main cast.

I really like how this theme is not confined to solely being applied to the League. Like I was saying, even the other future-license-seekers are not portrayed as being evil, something that I think many other authors would jump to do. Sure, they're trying to beat the main characters. But that doesn't mean they have to be assholes about it, and they're not! It's great.

As always, I love my moody son, and would love to see more of him, thanks.

And... Did I see... An attempt at somewhat further developing some romance in this series!? Adding some romance would be a great development to even further enhance the amazingness of this series, but plz Horikoshi, do it right.

*Edit* After some internet forum exploration, I've discovered that the opinion I expressed in the previous spoiler-tag (that OchakoxBakugo is a better ship than OchakoxMidoriya) is not as prevalent as I thought, and I'd like to discuss this.

A comic saying OchakoxMidoriya is right and OchakoxBakugo is a sin

I think the reason I thought that everyone was on board the OchakoxBakugo train is that my source for discussion (Reddit) never really talked about ships at all, whereas my source of fanart/memes (Tumblr) is very ship-oriented. Meaning: The only shipping information I got was from what the people on Tumblr were shipping. The picture above is from Reddit, and if you click on it you'll be taken to a thread that is very predominantly OchakoxMidoriya, which was a giant shock and eye opener for me to read because of how different it was than what I was used to seeing. There are many corners to the internet and each one is different, so I mustn't only source one corner and expect it to represent all corners or else I'll find myself terribly in the wrong. That being said:

Why it's Not Wrong to Ship Katsuki Bakugo (an essay)

If you read my essay, please say so on this poll just because I'll be really excited if anyone actually does read it (lol)!

There are at least two storyarcs packed into this volume. The first one concentrates on our young heroes' training while the second story leads to the Provisional Licensing Exam.

What keeps this series from feeling redundant is the banter between the characters and their development, whether it is small or big. In fact, one of the coolest things about this series is its accent on teamwork and it is certainly one of my favourite elements.

It should be mentioned that the second storyarc doesn't really compare to the previous exams in how it the stakes didn't seem as high as they were before. I think the introduction of certain characters could've been teased earlier to help us anticipate with excitement for what was to come here. Nonetheless, its the originality of these events that makes things so entertaining.

Yours truly,

This one is more school focus, mostly always one out of two is in this series. So it is a bit «slower» this has still lot of action in the school competition/test. Lower stake but entertaining nonetheless!

I like how the mangaka balances the villains and villain attacks with regular training and school stuff without it feeling like these things don’t fit together in any way—it’s all very intentional and flows really well. With that I love how Deku is adapting his fighting style and the reappearance of Mei from the sports festival was great and somewhat hilarious because she’s slightly insane yet fully dedicated to her craft which is admirable, even though she needs to work on her presentation and approaching-people-without-freaking-them-out skills, lol.

The test is really intense and seems to want the students to kill each other (which is no surprise at this point, lol!) but it’s so great to see the UA students work together and see how far they’ve come from even a couple volumes ago. I really liked the focus put on Kaminari in that one scene, not to mention the end scene of the remaining UA students coming together to fight for and with each other—that part really moved me and shows just how far they’ve all come and how each one is important and special in their own way even if they don’t feel that way at first.

I’m curious to see how this test ends with the rescue portion!

‼️Content‼️

Language: gah; freakin’; crap; geez; darn; perv; freaking; piss; steamed turd; dissing; damned; heck

Violence: injuries and blood (PG-PG-13); fighting with weapons, superpowers, and hand to hand (PG-PG-13); a guy smashes into the ceiling

Sexual: a teen guy is a pervert; a girl’s shirt opens in the front all the way down to her stomach; a girl’s boobs partially stick out of her shirt in a guy’s face (meant to be funny not sexy); a girl’s shirt shows some cleavage; a girl “melts” off her clothes and ends up running around naked (nothing indecent/private is shown; nothing more then if she was wearing a bikini)

Other: superheroes/supervillains/superpowers; an explosion; a character’s superpower balls up people into “dough balls” of flesh

The Smile Hero flirting with Eraserhead really pissed me off instead of making me laugh like the joke it was apparently meant to be.
Anyway, the students moving in the UA Dorms is fun. I can't wait for all the students to get their learner licenses ASAP.

I loved the first round of the license exam, especially with UA really finding their stride in what it looks like to work and succeed together. I also enjoyed seeing the development of Midoriya’s abilities and confidence in contrast to All Might’s current status.

- My boyfriend dropped off volumes 12-14 about a week ago and I've just been waiting to get back into them. I have to say though, there was a severe lack of Todoroki in this volume which was always be disappointing.

Ok, with this volume, was definitely a lot more laid back than the last one. Which was honestly probably good for my heart, which was still dying from the last one. I love how more and more characters keep getting introduced as the volumes continue on. I normally get annoyed with stories that have too many characters, because I tend to struggle to keep them all straight. But all these characters have unique personalities and awesome powers, and I genuinely like them all.
