In a small southern college town, Sunshine Wilson is dying to date a nice boy. Literally, because after a lifetime of special doctor appointments, she's got six months give or take before she bites the dust. Enter Nix Death-Hammer, the 'nice guy' whose past is as messy as her medicine cabinet. He needs to date a nice girl for six months to win freedom from his mother 'the Crocodile of Alabama.' The timeline works, particularly when her old stalker shows up to move Nix into protector mode, but only if feelings stay under wraps, along with the truth about Sunshine's terminal illness. Nix has secrets of his own, the biggest one of all that he's not about to lose Sunshine once he has a taste of her sweetness, even if his opposition is death.
Fast-paced, full of twists, humor, and suspense, this duology is part dark comedy, romantic suspense, with a dash of the supernatural. Welcome to the wild and wicked world of the Super Serum Billionaires.
My biggest issue with this book is the dumbest use of a slow burn trope - MMC doesn’t want to have s*x with the FMC bc losing her virginity will be painful????
This is the 3rd book in this series that I’ve read and I’ve made allowances for the “quirky” writing and world building in the previous books bc I liked the main characters, but nothing in this series makes sense? Nothing about this world is explained, it’s as though the person who wrote this came up with these ideas as they wrote the book.
I’d give this book negative stars if I could. Please see below for an actual excerpt of this sh*tty book.
“He’s okay not having sex with you?” “Well that was rude to ask something so vulgar and completely personal.” “Eventually, he’s going to rape you, and then I’ll have to kill him. I’ll go to jail because it’ll serve you right to die alone after you didn’t even invite me to your wedding. I would have brought you a really great present.”
And here we have yet another man written for the female gaze. I mean, I'm not complaining. Nix played a role in the first two books but I didn't really clock him as someone interesting. To be honest, I'm still not wholly invested in him. And as for the heroine...the first 60% of this book can be summarized in the opening lines of Chapter 13:
"I was legally married to a man I barely knew, except that I knew how he looked without a shirt, and that seemed to trump everything else. How had I gotten so superficial?"
Girl, we're all wondering that.
Like the first two books in the series, I wanted more plot development and less canoodling. For a technically "clean" book, there is way too much time spent obsessing over virginity and physical intimacy. Sunshine also really does have the magic hoo ha, as every man who lays eyes on her because instantly obsessed. We finally got the plot development with the last, oh, maybe 20% of the story. Enough plot development, at least, that I'm willing to buy the book and force my roommates to read it.
Mostly, though, I'm just counting down until Horse's book.
Oh, and maybe a Beastie book. PLEASE GIVE ME A BEASTIE BOOK.
Jumping back into this world! I enjoyed the development of Nix and Sunshine’s relationship, and I anticipate things getting even more interesting between them. Curious to see who proves to be a villain or a hero when everything is said and done. Have already started next book, ha!
Although I didn’t like this as much as the first 2 books, there’s a charm to this. There’s more information on the serum and it’s affect on the body and a deeper look at the other characters from the first 2 books. I’m reading these to see where the story goes.
