I read it in one breath, I didn't even eat or drink anything, that's how consumed I was by it and honestly it's been a while since that happened to me..
Elsie has a way of making you truly feel for her characters, it's why I love her books so much, and this one made me feel so many things... I was giggling and kicking my feet so much, I felt anxious and laughed and cried and fell in love..
I loved Bash, an aerial firefighter, he's truly a man after my heart, grumpy and prickly, but with a heart of gold. He was hurt far too many times and it honestly broke my heart. His struggle with keeping everything in, with doing what he thought was right and the way he was made to feel second best, was heartbreaking. Seeing the way Gwen made him feel lighter and happier and how he always loved every part of her, how he grew and slowly started to take charge of his life and the way he truly worked on himself, made my heart flutter. We love a man that can not only recognize, but actually do something to make amends for his behaviour. His control around Gwen was both entertaining and frustrating, but seeing that control slip was the highlight of the book. It was everything..
Gwen was such a light, positive and confident and I loved her passion for her work as a yoga teacher. She had her own baggage, but she never let it bring her down. She went after what she wanted, but never at the expense of others. She gave Bash all the space, but never gave up and she always stood her ground. She told him off when he really needed someone to do that, but she never let him feel second best, she choose him every time. I absolutely loved how she was with Clyde, he was like a father she always wanted to have.
Clyde is, without a doubt, one of my favourite characters ever. Him stirring up trouble was hilarious and I loved everything he did for his two doofuses. He did make me cry a few times and I'm so happy he's okay. Bash giving him his kidney was one the kindest things you can do. Their friendship was my favourite and seeing them rib each other was so entertaining.
I also loved seeing everyone else, I adore every single character and I'll never tire hearing about them, especially West.
And, while I was a little worried about Tripp, he wasn't that bad. Hope we learn more about him. And Emmett too..
I have to say I was afraid, with the main conflict being the fact that Bash is her ex-boyfriend's dad, that everything is going to be too complicated, but they handled the situation pretty well. It was a more boring approach, but it fit..
I loved their meet-cute, the limes and tequila, and even more, I loved how their story progressed. All that tension and angst and so much chemistry.. Bash and his battle with guilt and the feelings he felt for Gwen, their instant connection and all those moments they were so close to losing control, but never quite there, gave me everything I needed. And when that control finally snapped, ohhh, that was so hot. That flight scene and what came (pun intended) after, was so good..
I also loved all the small moments, every time he let Gwen help him when everything became too much, all the raw and vulnerable moments, especially that moment on the balcony that made me cry far too much for my liking and of course we can't forget the racoon..
This book truly pulled on my heartstrings, I took everything way too personally and honestly any book that makes me feel that way is an incredible book in my eyes. And what happened at the end, hit a little too close to home, because we had a close call with a fire this summer...
I can't believe this is the last book, I'm a little sad, but so excited for the next series!!
