Pretend to be someone’s boyfriend while hiding out with his family? This is too easy.

I’ve made some mistakes in life, but being an accountant for criminals has to be the biggest. I knew something was up for a while, but when the rumors reached me that I might be the one skimming money, I knew I had to get out of town and fast. Those guys aren’t exactly known for having reasonable conversations.

I bought the first ticket leaving the city, only to end up with a delayed flight, but a very adorable fellow passenger to wile away the night. Turns out he’s going to the same place I am, and he needs help with the family business’s finances. My expertise. Convincing him to let me be his pretend boyfriend and help with his troubles is easier than it should be, but it’s exactly what I need.

All I have to do now is blend in, hide out, and stay under the radar, all while enjoying his accepting family, interesting work, and the sizzling connection between us. As long as they don’t find out what I really am, I might be able to make

The Pretender is Book 1 in the In Love With A Criminal series. In it, you can expect a man running from the bad guys, and a clueless, way too trusting man just trying to keep his family together. You’ll also find an only one bed, fake dating, forced proximity romp with a warm slightly meddling family, wholesome midwest vibes (or are they) and two men finding love in spite of the obstacles between them. It is sometimes light, sometimes serious, but always steamy good fun.

"𝙸𝚗 𝚊 𝚍𝚒𝚏𝚏𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚕𝚒𝚏𝚎, 𝚠𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍'𝚟𝚎 𝚋𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎 𝚘𝚏 𝚎𝚊𝚌𝚑 𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛'𝚜 𝚕𝚒𝚟𝚎𝚜. 𝚃𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚕𝚎𝚍𝚐𝚎 𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚒𝚗𝚎𝚟𝚒𝚝𝚊𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚗 𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎."

Okay, for a mafia romance, this was downright adorable. To be fair to the storyline, I guess it's more accurate to say mafia adjacent. The majority of the story takes place at a wonderful little winery inhabited by some interesting people. Let's just say I want to be Nonna when I grow up.

The romance was instalove and sugary sweet. I loved how Deo started off their story with the astrological sign comparisons. As if he needed to hold onto that information to keep himself grounded. I also liked how both men were pleasantly surprised by their compatibility the longer they spent time together. They weren't expecting the connection, but both embraced it.

"𝙸'𝚖 𝚐𝚘𝚗𝚗𝚊 𝚙𝚞𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚒𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚎𝚡𝚒𝚎𝚜𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜. 𝚈𝚘𝚞'𝚕𝚕 𝚜𝚒𝚝 𝚘𝚗 𝚖𝚢 𝚕𝚊𝚙 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚎 𝙸 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚖𝚢 𝚜𝚞𝚒𝚝 𝚘𝚗, 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞? 𝚈𝚘𝚞'𝚕𝚕 𝚋𝚎 𝚒𝚗 𝚕𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎."

I'm so happy things turned out like they did in the end. I was worried. Not gonna lie. I mean I know this is a romance, but that doesn't mean unsavory things are off the table per say. This book is mafia-esque, remember. It's a very present theme, looming over the beauty of the relationship blossoming between the MCs.

These two really listened to one another. Which is wild for me to say in a romance where one MC is pretending to be something he's not. But it's true. It was lovely to see two men who simply just wanted to make one another happy. That doing so brought them happiness. I couldn't wait to finish to see what HEA ending the author had in store for them. I was not disappointed.

It is always a pleasure to see when Mia go back into contemporary, as that is how I first found them as author. I will always love their paranormal just nice to see them go back and forth between the genres. Deo & Balt meet while stranded at an airport and decide why not bunk together. When the chemistry is undeniable Balt agrees to go home to help Deo navigate his family and their business. These two just balance each other in a beautiful way, that even with Balt holding secrets you understand the need and hesitation in coming clean and possibly leave this new life they've been building together. Now let's talk about Deos beautifully unique family, they all were made to embrace and encourage the chaos and allow everything to play as it needs to without people being hurt in the process.

This is definitely on the lighter side when it comes to a mafia romance... Mafia-esque?
Balt and Deo are two very different men but are able to help each other out when Deo is flying back home for good, and Balt is flying away, escaping his problems. The two men have great chemistry and instantly connect so it makes sense when Balt goes home with Deo. The Italian family are all of the warmth and stubbornness that you would expect, from all of them. Deo is swallowing his pride by returning but he's welcomed back with open arms and a happy heart that he will be taking over the family business. Balt's secret slowly gets to him, with the net closing in, too, but there is no denying just how much Dea, and his family, have come to mean to him. They provide something to each other that neither has had before - security, trust, friendship, and off the charts heat. It's great when they also feel secure enough to share things never spoken of before.
Balt's time is on a countdown but help comes from an unexpected source and he has to figure out what to do that is best for himself, his sister, as well as Deo and his family.
It's a great story, entertaining and hot in places. I enjoyed the warmth of Deo's family. They're all very welcoming and supportive of both men, which is a surprise to Deo who left to experience life away from the family winery. I'm looking forward to the others in the family getting their HEA, especially Brogan! And I'm totally in love with Nonna!
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

I received this book as an advanced reader copy and wanted to give my honest review. I loved this book. I read it in less than a day. I would have read it faster, but I had to work
First of all, the fake boyfriend trope is my absolute favorite. so that didn't hurt the books cause next. The characters have such great backstory and chemistry. I really felt their emotions and was holding my breath in a couple of spots, hoping things turned out. Which, of course, they did, because a good book needs that happily ever after. Which, this one, did not disappoint.

This was such a fun, quick and lighthearted story! I was hooked from the start and and couldn't put it down. The insta-lust was done perfectly! I don't always enjoy it, but the vibes were there and I loved their chemistry, so I was on board.
I love the whole Benedetti family. I love their banter, their love and easy acceptance. Nonna kinda stole the show and I love her.
I loved how everything played out between Deo and Balt. Even though they were faking it, I loved how open they were with each other. I really enjoyed the scene and discussion about their fantasies. There was so much acceptance, openness and love in that scene. Their chemistry was awesome, but that's not all, they complimented each other perfectly and they felt like such a natural fit.

If you're in the mood for a fake dating story, between a son returning home to take over the family company and an accountant on the run from the Mafia, then this is the book for you. There is a bit of angst, a lot of sweet and swoony moments, great banter and a great family. I'm excitee to see more of these characters.

I received and ARC from Mia Monroe, and this is my honest opinion.

It was refreshing to see two MCs who were so ok with having casual sex with each other. Romance novels tend to make sex the end-all-be-all of things (which it most definitely can be given how much vulnerability and openness it requires) but I liked see the light, no strings attached version of it here too as a way to show how Deo and Balt were attracted to one another and were compatible without introducing feelings too early and making it instalovey.

I'm choosing to ignore the fact that Balt was seemingly very open about spending money (which I assume isn't cash and thus can be used as a way to locate him).

Wow, this book actually ended up decently steamy with how both Deo and Balt opened up about their kinks. 🥵 Very pleasant surprise tbh.

I liked how there was no conflict in Deo taking over three family business from his dad and uncle and I really liked how they all still took each other into account despite Deo being the one in charge (particularly how Deo made sure to include them when he asked about the name change and how they were gracious and gave their support despite not being fans of it)

It was nice how both Deo and Balt stayed relatively on the same page regarding their fake relationship. Both even admitting that they were struggling to not stay attached but explicitly still trying to do so.

I had two issues with the story (other than the plot hole of Balt using trackable money transaction yet not being found):

1. I didn't really like that Balt knew the awful things his bosses were doing yet stayed on in spite of what had happened with his parents (and also, that meant he was a deeply immoral person). I get that he was pulled in via his parents, but I would've liked to have seen him be more of an objector or have more guilt over his involvement (he appeared rather casual about the fact that he knew he worked for killers)

2. Deo's nonna was basically a deus-ex machina. She literally had the perfect solution to Balt's problems and was willing to help him despite there being a very real chance that Balt had just been a lying mafioso on the run.

Yeah, the last 25% weren't great since all of it essentially boiled down to Nonna calling people who did stuff off screen to save Balt from the mafia. Was a surefire 4 stars here, but the very unsatisfying last quarter of the book knocks this down to a 3.5 (which I'm rounding down).

DNFd at 26%. This one just wasn't for me. I don't wanna read about their first times and how great Deo is at sucking cock because he does it a lot. Then turns around to says "wanna make out? tongue...ass grabbing...fuck my mouth...
I would have never guessed from the writing they were 34 and 41...plus one is a money man Mafia?!?! No fucking way.

Quotes:

“What was his name? The first guy?”
“Patrick. He was so opposite to me. Outgoing, confident. He knew exactly what he wanted. He approached me after class one day and invited me over for a beer.”
A smile tugs at Balt’s lips. “He was incredibly patient with me.”

“Did you do the deed?” I waggle my eyebrows. “All the way?”
Balt laughs softly. “We made out, got naked and rubbed our way to paradise. It was the most amazing day of my life up to that point.”

“That must have been so validating. Did you keep seeing him?”

“Here and there, but he released me from my shackles, so let’s just say I got around campus.” I gasp in mock disgust. “You slut.”
Balt laughs. “Indeed.” He squeezes my knee. “Tell me your story.” “Oh, I started messing around in high school. A little bit in middle school, but just, like, looking and light touching. This kid named Brandon was my first major experience. He was on the football team, popular, gorgeous. All the girls were crazy about him, and of course, we all thought he was straight.”..................

“Brave.” I laugh. “Very, but he figured it out just from watching me. At least he thought he did.” “What happened next?”
“He gave me a blow job and then I returned the favor. Like you said, it was the best day ever at that point. We hooked up the whole school year, but then his dad got a job in Milwaukee and they moved.”
“Were you openly dating?” “Oh no. I was definitely his dirty secret. He still had girls all over him and his friends didn’t know.”

MORE TALK OF EXS AND EXPERIENCES

Balt holds my gaze, his expression soft and open, and all I want to do is crawl into his lap and taste his lips again.
“You’re so hot,” I whisper.
“You’re stunning,” he whispers back. Instead of holding back, I do what I want and climb onto his lap. He sits back, giving me room as I drape my arms around his neck.
“Want to make out for a while?” He nods as his eyes heat. “I sure do.”

3.5 ⭐

I liked it overall. I didn't love it, it was like, something was missing for me, to totally enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it just fine but it didn't wow me. It was very fast paced, a lot of dialogues what I love! It was very *snaps fingers* the whole times, you know.

Normally I don't love age gap but they were 34 & 41 which I didn't mind at all, actually I really enjoyed their ages. Both characters were great too. Though Balt is my favorite, he was quiet and understandably scared but still very protective. I didn't love Deo but he was very open and honest, I liked that about him.

Those two had immediate chemistry. My problem was, it felt like they skipped the delicious falling in love stage and went right into a solid relationship. Sure it's a fake dating book which means they pretend to be in a relationship but in other books they still fall in love and get to now each other, here they clicked so well they immediately acted like a married couple? I missed the butterflies and awkwardness. Maybe that's just me though.

The sex scenes were almost to many for me. Normally I would be totally bored with (7?) sex scenes in a 250 pages book but they were kept interesting and different, so I didn't mind it as much. Speaking of sex, they had very open communication about their preferences, kinks and fanstasies, which I loved! It's rare that they are this open in books!

The trans rep is always appreciated!

Some minor pet peeve, but the pet name Lover makes me grimace and cringe every time.

What really disappointed me was the epilogue. I hate when an epilogue is just the build up for the next book. That could have been a prologue in the second book. I want to read what they've been up to, in their case in the last two years. What happened? What's with the Mafia dude? Are they married? Engaged? Moved? *sigh*

Loved This Couple💜

I’m not usually a lover of mafia books but this one whilst it had the mafia connection threatening the life of one of the main characters, it didn’t dilute the growing romance and feelings of Balt and Deo even though it was looming over them and any future they could have.

A chance meeting in an airport, a delayed flight and overnight hotel stay brought them together. The chemistry was instant but their reasons for being on the same flight were very different.

Balt was running for his life from a vicious mafia family after being their “Money Man” for a few years and had no idea where he was going and just bought a ticket to a part of the country he thought they would never look for him and Deo was returning home to his Italian family vineyard after years away, chasing his dream of big city life which had crashed and burned.

With the strong chemistry between them and Deo worrying about how he would be accepted by his family returning as a failure, they decide to return to the vineyard as a fake couple until Balt has to move on.

They were a cute couple and actually perfect for each other. A couple who talked and listened to each other and who had a hot and varied s*x life! I liked the way they embraced the speed of their feelings and compatibility. Deo’s family were adorable and welcoming and as for Nonna, well what a dark horse! When the going got tough Nonna was in her element. I also liked the transgender element of the story and Brogan was feisty.

An enjoyable start to the series and I would recommend.

Great start to a new series. A plane delay sets up this slight age-gap, meet-cute between Amadeo & Balthazar. Both of whom are running,Amadeo (Deo) to his family winery with a feeling of failure and Balthazar (Balt) from some bad associates. The chemistry between them is instant, so when Deo offers a solution to both their problems Balt jumps at the chance to lay low in Wisconsin. They both agree to the terms set out in the beginning, no feelings just sexy times and Balt eventually leaves in the end. However, that’s always easier said than done. Deo’s family welcomes him home with open arms and none of the “I told you so’s” he created in his mind. They also welcome Balt as the boyfriend, and welcome his financial input into the winery. But, along the way between the nostalgic home cooked Italian meals and the time both MC’s spend together in, and out of, the bedroom feelings are caught. When Balt feels the noose from his associates getting tighter he does the only thing he can think of, run. Deo’s Nonna knows best though, and even has an idea of how to permanently get rid of Balt’s associates. Having experienced this before, unbeknownst to her family. And it’s hilarious to see the sweet Nonna with a ruthless streak. These two pretenders pretend themselves right into a HEA and they were perfect for each other. Loved Deo’s cousin Brogan as a side character and hope to see him get his HEA as well. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Pretender is the 1st installment of Mia Monroe’s new “In Love with a Criminal” series and I have to say it was a fantastic start! Balt and Deo are both stuck at an airport when their flight gets cancelled and “oh no!” only 1 room left available at the hotel. Instant chemistry rises between the two and both have their reasons for starting a fake relationship while Balt accompanies Deo back to his hometown. Falling in love was never part of the plan, especially with the secrets Balt is keeping. Sucked into a world he had swore he would never be a part of, help escaping comes from a place you would least expect it. This was a truly enjoyable read. It was a pleasure to watch them fall in love with each other despite their intent of just keeping everything on the surface. Not only was this a love story, but it was also part family drama with Deo having to work through coming home after leaving on some not so great terms. It shows that everyone grows up over time and sometimes the story you think you know is not always a complete one. Storytelling that kept your attention, spicy scenes where you want them and just an all around great read. Not sure if the story will continue with these families or not, but I can definitely see possibilities with Deo's family. Can’t wait to see what comes next.

Mia's return to contemporary romance is welcomed with open arms. Mia has started a fun and steamy series with this novel, and I'm loving it so far. The relationship may be fake, but the chemistry between Amadeo and Balthazar was real from the instant they met. I also love the side characters, especially Nona, and I loved that Deo had a good friend to confide in. Deo also has a family with strong Italian roots that he's going home to, and he's afraid of disappointing them, because he didn't want to take over the winery business. But, just the opposite is true when he finds out that Balt has accounting expertise -- something that put him on the run in the first place, entirely not his fault, however -- and jumps in to help straighten out the finances. Soon, Deo becomes more involved, helping to bolster and give the winery new life. But Balt's past finally catches up to him, and Nonna has some tricks up her sleeve that help him get out of hot water.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, from the steamy and kink-filled moments to the banter and found family feels. I look forward to reading more in this series.

From the moment Amadeo and Balthazar meet, their chemistry crackles off the page—even if their relationship begins as a ruse. The fake dating trope is handled with charm and depth, making their emotional journey feel authentic and compelling.
What truly elevates the story is the rich cast of side characters. Nonna is an absolute gem, bringing warmth and wisdom with a mischievous edge. Deo’s confidant adds another layer of emotional grounding, and the portrayal of Deo’s Italian family is both heartfelt and nuanced. His fear of disappointing them by not taking over the winery is relatable, but the narrative flips that tension beautifully when Balt’s unexpected accounting skills breathe new life into the struggling business.
Balt’s past adds a layer of suspense, and the way Nonna steps in with her clever solutions is both delightful and satisfying. The novel blends steamy, kink-filled moments with witty banter and a strong sense of found family, creating a romance that’s as emotionally resonant as it is sexy.
I thoroughly enjoyed every page and can’t wait to see where Mia takes this series next.

3.75 rounded up

Deo and Balt meet in the airport one snowy day. Deo is heading back to his family vineyard to work after 8 years in the big city and Balt is on the run after hearing false rumours blaming him for stealing money from the mafia family he does the accounts for. Balt is looking for somewhere to lay low and Deo is ashamed to be returning home with his tail between his legs so they come up with the plan to be fake boyfriends which works for both of them.
I did not expect this book to be as steamy as it was! The chemistry was jumping off the screen from the very beginning but there were lots of sweet moments between Deo and Balt too with a splash of kink.
Deo’s entire family were great! They’re a large Italian family who all live on the big family compound and have worked at the vineyard. They love each other so much and show unconditional support. Don’t even get me started on how awesome Nonna is!! I look forward to learning more about Deo’s brother and cousin in the rest of the series. Book 2’s blurb is giving me Onley James vibes and I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I don't read mafia romance, and I don't read darker stories, but I always read what Mia Monroe writes... because she always brings a unique twist to what could be a dark romance... and this time it's a sweet, warm and meddling midwestern family who just breathe a fresh, new take on the fake relationship, hide in plain sight story line...

Balt and Deo are steamy good and their chemistry is palpable... you also get to see these two working in sync to unravel the problems with the family business and deal with all Deo's crazy relatives. As much as I love Balt and Deo it's Deo's grandmother who steals the story and makes this book so worth reading! If you can handle just a smidge of murder and mayhem I recommend adding this book to your TBR.

I can't wait to see where this storyline goes next!

“Dreams are important. If the old one doesn’t work anymore, dream a new one.”

What a great start to a new series, In Love with a Criminal, by Mia Monroe. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this. Anytime an author mentions criminals or Mafia storylines I'm always dreading that it will be too dark for me. This definitely had some dark aspects but overall it was a fairly light story.

On the run from the bad guys, only one hotel room left with one bed, fake boyfriends, hiding out in a small Midwestern town, everyone needs a nonna, who doesn't like lace and silk, brings the heat

I must say I love Nonna. The story starts with Balthazar at the airport taking a flight out. When he overhears the passenger in front of him that an unexpected storm came in and flights are cancelled, he followed him to the seats. He introduces himself to Amadeo and go to the hotel. When Balt realizes there are no rooms left, he was leaving to go to the ballroom for a cot. Deo had an room and offered to share. This starts their story of how Balt and Deo got to be pretend boyfriends when Deo went back to the family vineyard. I loved the progression of the story and how Nonna helped save Balt from the criminals. Cannot wait to read the next one in the series.

He may be on the run from the mafia, but this is still a Mia Monroe story, so it’s full of sweetness, steam, and fun.

United by a snowstorm and a need for a fresh start, they make their way to Deo’s family winery. Deo is returning home with his tale between his legs, or at least that’s how he feels. Balt is looking to hide out till he figures a way out of a misunderstanding with his old boss.

What they find is a really sweet relationship, full of support and trust. And a really amazing family.

It may not be the future either had once envisioned, but what they end up with is something really special.

I am loving this new series!

This was an excellent start to a new contemporary series from Mia. Deo and Balt were so good together; despite it allegedly being no strings it’s clear they really do care and unlike some stories with this plot they actually talk and listen to each other. Surprisingly for a book from Mia there was a moment where I was worried external forces would keep these two apart; I should have known better as Mia came out swinging with a perfect and delightfully surprising solution from an unexpected person. It was perfect and sweet and honestly amusing and it made the book just that bit more special. Can’t wait for the next in the series!

Another winner from Mia! Sometimes, you worry when a beloved author starts something new; will it be as good? Will you still like it/them? The answer is YES, yes to both, at least that has been my experience with this author. I have a soft spot for the "in love with a criminal" premise, even if they're not very criminal-y. These 2 MCs were fire together, and I'm so glad they both took some chances on each other. I absolutely adored Deo's family (Nonna rocks!) and the scheming done to save the day. Sweet, steamy, suspenseful, and satisfying resolutions. What's not to love?

Balt is an accountant that works for a criminal family and finds himself on the run when someone starts to skim from them.
Deo is going back home and he is a little embarrassed since he really didn't want to take over the family winery.
What may have started out as fake boyfriends, running from criminals, saving the family winery
turned into so much more.
Balt and Deo may have been faking it but the chemistry between them are real, Deo's family is very loving and supportive, Balt's accounting skills come in handy for the winery.

Could a chance meeting between two strangers really lead to forever?

Mia Monroe has done it again! This is the first book in a new series, and Balt and Deo are everything! Their story is the best way to kick things off.

The insta-chemistry between these two is swoon worthy. Add in spicy adventures in the bedroom, a well-intentioned meddling family (with a few secrets up their sleeves), and you have everything you need.

I found myself invested in the characters, and the pages just kept turning. It was a sweet read.

This was a great start to a new series. Deo is a sweetheart that feels like he is coming home with his tail between his legs. Balt is on the run from his current life, but gets distracted by the cutie next to him. The guys are different, but fill the gaps in each other's lives.

I think this story is a cute, hot, touching story with lovely characters. I love Deo's family and how open they are to him and Balt. There are some secrets that are revealed and some fantasies that are explored.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

This is a cute, easy read - the story of the especially sweet Deo and the unintentional criminal Balt. They hit it off at a chance meeting and then the sparks fly whilst Balt attempts to hide out at Deo’s family property before his past catches up with him.

There’s some good side characters within Deo’s family - namely Nonna and Brogan (I hope we get their story), a cute small town setting, lots of interesting spice and chemistry between Deo and Balt and a sweet romantic love story.

Book 2 looks like it may be a little darker with the criminality - I’ll be interested to see how that turns out.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I really liked the premise of this one, and I thought it was well executed. Despite not being the biggest fan of the fake dating trope, I liked both MCs and easily felt their chemistry and connection. Deo and Balt just fit together so well, and the added mafia adjacent plot line made for an exciting underlining current of tension. I loved the ending, especially Nonna and her sneaky revenge tactics!

This one was a good mix of fun and steam. I liked how Balt and Deo interacted right from the start and I loved how things progressed for them. Nonna helped make the story though. I wish she was my nonna. lol. I'm looking for to the next story in the series.

"The Pretender" is more of Mia Monroe doing what she does best. She has given us loveable and relatable characters, fabulous side characters, and a story that once you pick up you won't want to put down. Amadeo and Balthazar Are perfect for each other.
It is emotional. Sweet and swoony, great characters.
Fake relationship , instant spark, strong chemestry,
Smalltown , family buisness. Hea.
I can’t wait for the next book.

Balt & Deo

I enjoyed having Mia step back into contemporary writing, tho I still very much love her paranormal books immensely!! I was kinda hoping for a bit more criminal aspect to this…more roughness or such but it was all sweet and steamy (nothing wrong with the steamy part, lol!!) It was a great story overall.

This was a great book for so many reasons - I loved the originality, the location (set in the Midwest!) and the sweet relationship between Balt and Deo (sweet but spicy!) This author is famous for her found families - this one was extra special with the close kit bonds of Deo’s family (and his surprising grandma!) A really great story and I’m so excited for this new series!
