Phenomenal debut! I really enjoyed this book, only some very minor complaints, because everything about this I just loved. I can’t believe this is this author’s first book.
I’ll start with the storyline. Nothing we’ve never heard of before, but still done in a very clever way. Edith’s grandmother dies before they could go on this very Arthurian (I started listening right about here) expedition to find a particular Arthurian object (you know what I’m talking about) and overall just prove King Arthur’s existence. It was her grandmother’s dying wish, for her to go on this expedition, she was very passionate about it. So she decides to go, her grandma’s ashes in hand. But not alone, oh no. Through a series of bizarre turns of evens, she comes in contact with Thomasin. A… gang leader? Yeah, sounds interesting. And to anybody who’s like me, you’ll end up loving her.
Speaking of our main characters, Edith. I think I understand her personality, I do, and a few insecurities and abandonment issues are normal. But. She just came off a bit whiny to me, I don’t really know why but it was as if every other page she was going on and on about how she’ll leave her and get tired of her. And I wasn’t having it. But her issues with her father, her family, why she ultimately decided to embark on this mission, really got to me and I did really like her in the end.
Thomasin shares Edith’s issues with her own family, she has nobody, and that has impacted her as well. She was such a great character, especially when she let her guard down, when Edith could see her for what she really is.
As for the spice, it stays closed door, the very little descriptions of it we have stop just before anything actually goes down.
One thing I wish was a bit different is that maybe I would’ve liked a bit more Arthurian stuff going on? Maybe some more explanation for people who are not all that familiar with the legend, which isn’t my case, but I simply don’t see how anybody could get interested in knowing more about the legend after reading this book. Because it wasn’t talked about all that much, it was barely introduced. It wasn’t a very prominent part of the book, it was a secondary aspect of it, not as important as the romance.
But that is honestly the only major complaint I have, because the romance? Gorgeous. The atmosphere? Stunning. I can’t get over how perfect our two FMCs are together. Their relationship progressed smoothly (even if a bit rapidly, due to the length of the book) in a very organic way and they were just so sweet together, they would give up their lives for each other. The way Thomasin talks about Edith says it all about her love for her. They’ll be on my mind for a long time, the two of them, I already know.
I think there’s going to be a continuation to this book? I have the feeling it’s going to be a series, but that still remains to be seen. I’d give this book a 4.25/5⭐️ I really loved it. Such a great debut.

This was fine for me. I had to push myself to read it because it felt like a lot of time was passing between clues on the quest and we didn't get to see much of it. And this is also when Thomasin and Edith start falling for each other. But again, we don't really get to see what it is that makes them fall. We only learn that they have. I liked the adventure aspect and I love a good quest, but I didn't really connect with the characters or the romance.

I adored this book, I couldn’t put it down and when I absolutely had to, I kept thinking about what would happen next. I loved the clues, the description of the adventure, the way the relationship developed between Edith and Thomasin and that some things are better left hidden from most and known to only a few.
I love a reformed highwaywoman rake and Thomasin might just be my favorite. She was gone for Edith from the minute she tried to rob her and Edith just smiled and offered her food. Edith was so earnest and trusting, so forgiving and kind and also strong and persevering. Her love for her grandmother, the only person that had truly loved and understood her was so endearing and I’m glad her grandmother was present in spirit when they reached Avalon.
I’m so glad we got to see their growth throughout the journey and how they learned from each other and made the other better. Their first time being inside a church wearing only confessional curtains was insane behavior and I’m absolute here for it. To later have Thomasin being so deeply hurt in the place where she had felt such joy just the day before, absolutely broke my heart.
I gasped so loudly and almost teared up when Jay died. He had become my favorite of the side characters which wasn’t that hard considering who the other man was, but to see him be so willing to give up his life for Edith despite not knowing her for long, killed me.
I can’t wait to see what this author publishes next.

I found this to be very enjoyable. I love a good queer fantasy with a quest! I had a great time with the puzzles, the love, and the character development. I thought the inclusion of Edith's grandmother was touching. I am excited to see what else this author writes in the future!

The book blurb for this book sounded interesting and fun. I was really looking forward to it.
From the beginning, I felt completely lost in the story. There was an incredible lack of world building throughout the story, but I never felt grounded. Even as the story went full throttle from page one, I never got my footing in the story and it ruined some of my reading experience.
When was this? How was this? Was it historical? Was it fantasy? I couldn't tell you. I never quite understood, and that's a bad sign as a reader. There was nothing to anchor me.
There is a lot going on in this story and I think if a few of the random extra plot side quests were removed and the world building and setting were more stabilized, it could have been a great read.

Imagine The Mummy in Victorian England and instead of ancient Egypt, its legends of King Arthur. Also? Make it QUEER. Adorable banter, fun puzzles, and a quest that I would love to have gone on myself.

“For the Love of the Quest” is the debut novel from Alexandra Ammon Parthun. Alexandra is not the first friend of mine to publish a book but I can tell the Arthurian legends and details were well-researched and the book itself is very well-written. For a debut novel, I certainly expect moments that feel unusually cheesy or dialogue that is unbearable. But Alexandra made fun, sexy banter that seemed fluid between Edith and Thomasin that I was able to enjoy. It has the perfect balance of adventure and romance. If you’re expecting time-accurate dialogue and banter, this isn’t it and that actually made it a more enjoyable read for me. This book felt like I was taking a bite into a beautifully well-crafted cupcake: the love and care is there but it’s sweet, enjoyable, and delectable the whole time.
I look forward to reading more of Alexandra’s work, both as a fan and a lover of queer romance.

I adore Edith’s optimistic, bubbly, passionate personality, and Thomasin’s strong, confident, secretly sweetheart personality! and the chemistry and banter between these two is just everything! ugh I love them so much! I would love more stories about them!
✪Not only was the chemistry between these two simply amazing, the plot was just as intriguing!! I mean as some who will loves stories about Merlin, King Arthur, and the round table, I really just love the way the author, Alexandra Ammon Parthun was able to connect this very well known and loved story to her own imagination and make it something special!
Recommend?: Absolutely, especially if you ever read/watched a King Arthur story and wished it was a little bit queerer.

Uhm… GAYYY. You have ABSOLUTELY got to be kidding me. This is such a thrilling, whimsical and delightful debut. I absolutely LOVED every single second that I spent with this book. This was truly the mashup and world immersion of all mashups. Genuinely it took bits and pieces of so many incredible things to create this entirely unique and enthralling fantasy adventure romp.
Something that I think SHINES about this book is how easy the buy in is. Everything is so vibrantly described and easy to visualize from the jump. The setting and scene and characters. You IMMEDIATELY understand Edith, and are still left with the thrill of bumping up against Thomasin again shortly thereafter. The ambiance is set so clearly. It reads as the coziest of gay bedtime stories to me.
Who wouldn’t want to live this dream!!! Edith is smart and earnest and brave and loving and willing to see good despite having no reason to do so.
Although initially about a band of criminals, there are minimal scenes of violence, and the sex is mostly foreplay fade to behind closed door.
The storytelling is just fantastic. Not to say that any of these were intentional or author pulls, but to convey the feelings that were evoked from this read: I felt the thrill of Six of Crows, the adventure and mystery of Caraval, the sleuthing of Enola Holmes and obviously the immaculately woven in vibes of Merlin and King Arthur lore !!! This book did so much. The deaths were meaningful, and the plot twists were twisty. I don’t know if there’s anything to fault.

Sometimes there is a book that feels like it was written specifically for you (or at least that you are very much the target audience). Arthurian Quests with Indiana Jones-style boogie traps? Major Our Flag Means Death vibes — but make it sapphic? Characters that love the weird annoying idiosyncrasies about one another?
This was an absolutely delightful read! I had the opportunity to listen to an ARC audiobook. The two voice actors were great. Highly recommend!

Absolutely loved this suspenseful, comical and colorful adventure! May we all come to the realizations that Edith and Thomasin did through their journey together, that we matter and that we are deserving of love. Bravo Alexandra Ammon Parthun on a fabulous debut!

Mostly it was fine? But Edith is naive to the point of absurdity, up until she goes killer mode without any particular moral thoughts about it. Nothing Edith, or really anyone, does makes any sense. I also have no idea whether this is set in a real historical period or if it’s fantasy.

Not my fave. I thought the premise was interesting, but I didn’t find Thomasin and Edith’s instant sweetness and coziness very believable, especially when Thomasin is supposed to be this fearsome gang leader. The side characters were also underdeveloped and mostly felt like they were there to move the plot along. And the spice was fade-to-black.

She wants to find Excalibur and prove to the world that Camelot and magic are real. She hires a feared gang leader to help and protect her along the way: Thomasin, who has never known a life outside of the criminal scene. Travelling from clue to clue, the two women get more and more invested in this quest and in each other, while the world around them keeps trying to stop them and bring them back (to the safety of her estate, for one, and to "justice" for the other).
I loved the protagonists - how they were created as such different women, but were so open to getting to know and learning from someone who is their complete opposite. Thomasin, in particular, despite her hardened facade, had so many layers to her, and I loved discovering more parts of her throughout the story, helped along by Edith's unwavering trust and care. And Edith's quick-wittedness was so entertaining! I loved how she could solve puzzle after puzzle with her knowledge, despite never having been out in the world.
The quest itself was entertaining, even if it occasionally felt mildly repetitive as the two women got trapped in some sort of underground cave again and again, but it didn't lose momentum and kept me engaged anyway. i was so ready to love this. sapphic historical romance? arthurian legend? the mummy comps? then i started reading
i’m so tired. does this book want to be a campy ahistorical romcom? is it supposed to be a more straightforward historical romance? i read almost a third of it and i still have no clue. it felt under-researched and flimsily strung together, with two annoying MCs who kept using modern language and colloquialisms. an easy DNF for me.

This book might have had literal on-page murder and a crime boss main character, but it somehow always felt chill and cozy to me?
It was an easy read and a ton of fun, probably especially if you enjoy reading King Arther-related things (I don't have a special interest in it, but these types of stories haven't let me down yet either). It didn't blow me away but I'm glad I read it; I do love lil quest, especially when it involves a little whimsy!

On her quest to find Excalibur, Lady Edith Darling enlists the help of Thomasin Shaw, leader of a feared criminal gang with the practical skills she lacks. Unexpectedly, they fall in love.
The historical context is rather vague (second quarter of the 19th century?), and the protagonists encounter surprisingly few people as they journey. This is not unlike accounts of the Grail Quest in the prose romances of the Middle Ages, and indeed supernatural elements intrude into both. As one might expect from the title, the focus is upon the quest itself, the challenges encountered to prove the questers’ worthiness, and the lessons they must learn to achieve success.
What is different, however, is that this not just a quest to find a mystical artifact with few distractions in the setting, but the development of a romantic relationship between two women, the antithesis of the sexual abstinence prized in those prose romances where Galahad achieves greatest success.
Here, the villains are all men (a controlling father, an ambitious gang rival, and a vengeful senior police officer); the two most influential positive figures are women (Edith’s dead grandmother and the Lady of the Lake); and the two protagonists are women rebelling against patriarchal authority. This, in other words, is a decidedly feminist recasting of the hero tale, and as such offers an interesting ironic perspective on the tradition.
Less satisfying is the protracted progression of the women’s romantic relationship. Though their insecurity is understandable, the frustration it causes does grow repetitive and slows the action. Nor does it help that the plot relies so heavily upon convenient coincidences.

This book had an interesting concept, but I also feel that it tried to do a little too much. From the very beginning everything happens incredibly quickly (for example, the two main characters meet literally immediately in the first page), and from that point on the story keeps introducing new events one after another at a very fast pace. So I think the book would have benefited from focusing on fewer plot points, there were so many things happening and some of them didn’t feel really necessary. I’d remove some of the scenes. But despite the fast pace, there were also moments where I found myself losing interest. The story was easy to read and I finished it quite quickly, but some sections felt a little repetitive and less engaging than I expected. I also found many of the characters somewhat stereotypical, which made it harder for me to connect with them on a deeper level.
One thing that surprised me was how many triggering scenes and topics the book contained. I wasn’t expecting that based on the description, and there were a few scenes that were too explicit for me personally, so I had to skip them. Readers who are sensitive to these kinds of topics may want to check the content warnings beforehand.
I don’t think this is a bad book. I liked the concept and the ending. With a bit more editing and a tighter focus, I think this story could become stronger.

As a queer woman whose first love was fantasy I desperately wanted to love this book. Alas this wasn’t for me. The writing felt like diving into a cozy romance but the story had much higher stakes, with violence and death. As a reader I found this contrast too jarring - it detracted from both the adventure and the romance.
If this had been a cozy romance I think it would’ve gone from a 3star to a 4star read for me. The fmcs were both charming. I appreciated the themes of family, love, meaning and grief that wove through the story. The writing was easy to read and flowed well. I think this author has a lot of promise and I’d absolutely give them a second chance.

This was such good, silly fun and I had an absolute blast.
This was a fast-paced adventure that combined legends, history and magic with sapphic longing to create an entertaining read that I couldn't put down.
Both of the main characters had depth, a great backstory and the perfect personalities to compliment each other. Their meet cute was adorable and then their developing relationship kept making me smile - we love a girl who will trust the woman she fancies to tattoo her.
I did find that the narrator slipping between Edith and Thomasin's voices for the third party narration rather than just the dialogue difficult to keep up with, especially as there were other points where it was in a third voice. I think it would have worked better to just use their voices for dialogue.
Otherwise, I had a great time and will happily read a sequel!

You know you’re a lesbian when immediately after your first kiss with a woman say, “You’re the most amazing woman I’ve ever known.”
The romance in this was incredibly sweet and satisfying. I love opposites attract, black cat x golden retriever, grumpy x sunshine - whatever you’d like to call it. I will say that it did happen rather quickly but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it. Along the same lines, I liked what we got of Thomasin and Edith’s personalities but I do think the characterization could have been a bit stronger. Still, I loved how attracted to each other’s differences they were.
I was a little confused about the time period. There is some modern language used at times and there doesn’t appear to be any homophobia aimed towards Edith and Thomasin (I love queernormative worlds but it was unclear if this was one or not).
The plot goes from very believable to very silly at times and I think this would be a stronger story if it committed to one or the other.

I give For the Love of the Quest 5 stars for a delightful adventure and endearing romance set around the quest for Excalibur. Other reviewers aren't wrong to compare this to The Mummy (1999) but with a sapphic romance and King Arthur instead.
My favorite thing about the entire book is just everything about Edith. She's smart and clever but also innocent and ignorant of some of the more complicated things about the world, but it means her approach comes from such an honest place that it's really endearing. Tomasin is a contrasting counterpoint, more comfortable and knowledgeable about some of the harsher things in life, but willing to learn (and wanting to put down some of those responsibilities she carries). They complement each other well and drive each other forward, and the climax that solidifies their relationship was exciting and emotional in the best way.
The adventure itself was excellent, taking us across the country to explore the history of Arthur, though I think I would have enjoyed even more of the history, but Edith's excitement swept me up as well and I was eager to find out what came next as they followed the trail. The pacing was really good, continuing to move things forward without rushing or lingering longer than necessary, and I read through it pretty quick, always ready to pick it back up and keep going when I had to put it down to sleep.
I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a heartwarming sapphic romance, an Arthurian adventure, and a story about what we gain on a journey.

Both FMCs are great - Thomasin is particularly fun, and Edith is very sweet - and I enjoyed their lighthearted but genuine, tender, and healing romance. The pair’s treasure-hunting escapades are vivid and cinematic, and were my favorite parts of the book.
I liked the voices of both audiobook narrators, but the pitch for Thomasin’s is a little too variable, making her sound overwrought and overdramatic. Still, the audiobook is a pleasant listen, and the pitch issues didn’t dampen my enjoyment much.

This book is a romantasy (with elements of mystery) which has the mythology of King Arthur and Excalibur woven in. I really liked how the information about Arthur and Excalibur and how it was added in to the storyline as the plot progressed.
I liked how we had dual POVs, but sometimes it was a little confusing trying to remember who the chapter was focusing on as there were no headings. The story is written in third-person so sometimes I had to go back to the start of the chapter and re-read a couple of sentences to figure it out.
I liked how the characters changed over time the more they were together, but they did lack a bit of depth overall. Some of the side characters could have done being featured more I think.
Overall a great book and I would recommend. If you’re a fan of India Holton I think this will be right up your street.

Lady Edith sets off to find Excalibur in honor of her grandmother’s final wish and hires the intimidating Thomasin to help her. What starts as a dangerous quest quickly turns into something much more complicated when feelings get involved.
This was such a fun and unique read. I loved the adventure, the puzzles, and the Arthurian legend aspect, but Edith and Thomasin were definitely my favorite part. Their dynamic was entertaining from the beginning, and I really enjoyed watching them slowly fall for each other while everything around them kept getting more chaotic.
