Stronger Than You Think: Building Lifelong Resilience
We’ve never been in greater need of resilience. We’ve also never misunderstood it more.
At one point or another, life will break us open. This is when we need resilience most—but as psychologist Dr. Sherry Hamby reveals, many of us are going about it the wrong way. Resilience isn’t something you either have or don’t. Instead, it is a modifiable process—meaning anyone can learn, practice, and benefit from it across every stage of life.
Drawing on more than thirty years studying violence, trauma, and recovery, Dr. Hamby reveals that the key to becoming more resilient lies in harnessing the necessary resources and assets to thrive after hardship. She calls this your resilience portfolio. The more and different kinds of strengths in your portfolio—in the form of internal assets like meaning-making and regulatory skills, and external resources like supportive social networks and physical environments—the more quickly you can bounce back from adversity, and the better prepared you’ll be to weather future hardship.
Accessing and nurturing these strengths is simpler than you think. Through client stories and her own journey of resilience, Dr. Hamby walks readers step-by-step through evidence-backed tools and strategies for regulating impulses and emotions, modifying your social and physical ecologies to promote greater wellbeing, and infusing your day-to-day with a deeper sense of purpose.
Loss, betrayal, and suffering might break us open, but it is never too late to put together the pieces of a good life. Stronger Than You Think invites us to access the kinds of strengths that stand the test of time.

This book fills a missing piece I didn’t even know was missing. I’ve read A LOT about trauma, but not nearly enough about resilience, and this book felt like exactly what I needed. What I loved most is how the author does not frame healing as something you do alone. She centers the role of environment and community, the people who hold us up, when so many other books/scholars push you to fix yourself just by yourself. It’s an empowering shift in perspective, and the book flows so well! I recommend reading this one.

Stronger Than You Think is an excellent contribution to the literature on resilience. Dr. Sherry Hamby demonstrates a rare ability to translate complex psychological and social processes into language that is clear and accessible, without sacrificing conceptual rigor.
What distinguishes this work is that it does not rely solely on research derived from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) populations. Instead, Hamby draws on evidence and perspectives from a broader range of cultural and social contexts — a departure from much of the existing literature, which tends to treat Western models of family, trauma, and community as the default framework against which all other experiences are measured.
As someone whose own cultural background falls outside this dominant paradigm, I found this approach particularly meaningful. This makes the book especially valuable for readers, practitioners, and researchers working in contexts where resilience, trauma, and relational dynamics do not conform to dominant Western models.
Overall, this is a significant contribution for anyone engaged with resilience, human strength, and culturally responsive approaches to understanding individuals and communities.

I was super excited to get my hands on a copy of this book about how to build resilience and thrive after experiencing trauma.
I've experienced my fair share of trauma in life—some of it before I was old enough to know what the word trauma meant—but one thing I've learned is that we all experience trauma and learning how to cope with it can make your life so. much. better.
The most important thing Stronger Thank You Think taught me was how the resilience portfolio approach can help me wade through the mountains of advice we get about wellness and figure out what’s most important for me.

Dr. Hamby does a remarkable job of synthesizing decades of research on strength and resilience, and translating it to accessible, concrete actions people can implement in their day-to-day life. She integrates these lessons with stories from her personal and professional lives, which enrich the reading experience and make you feel like you're in direct conversation with the author. In a world and timeline that bombards us with cynical messaging, this book is sorely needed. It is applicable to anyone hoping to find more meaning in their lives and cultivate tangible practices for lifelong resilience.

Dr. Hamby does an excellent job synthesizing the current state of resilience research (and its history) in an easily understandable format that is both interesting and practical. If you want to learn about and enhance your resilience strengths/resources, this book is for you!!

Stronger Than You Think reminded me that our past may shape us, but it does not have to define us.
As someone who is intrigued by the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the incredible resilience people can develop, this book really resonated with me. It does an excellent job of showing that while trauma leaves lasting effects, people also have an amazing capacity to heal, adapt, and grow stronger and provides strategies for this.
While based on decades of research, the book is written so that anyone can read it (not just professionals).
