Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago-based comic book writer, artist, and illustrator. He's worked on titles for most major publishers, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image. His current series with Skybound/Image Comics is EXTREMITY, a sci-fi/fantasy title he is writing and drawing, and continues to update his webcomic Space-Mullet in his spare time.
Daniel Warren Johnson is one of my absolute favorite comics creators (or "storytellers," as he would prefer to be called) and he is objectively one of the most creative, dynamic voices in the medium. When Flesk Publications launched a Kickstarter to finance a behind-the-scenes collection of his work, I pledged immediately and splurged on the deluxe version of "The Art Of Daniel Warren Johnson." I'm so glad I shelled out the extra dough because this book is GORGEOUS! There's so much content here: sketchbook pages, character designs, thumbnails, comics pages, commissions, illustrated pieces, and more, all with commentary from DWJ himself. The oversized format is perfect to get lost in (and I DID!), allowing the reader to appreciate every pencil line, ink spatter, white-out correction, and taped-over patch job. The deluxe edition also included a small zine where Johnson discusses his preferred drawing tools and that was very interesting, as well. I can't recommend this book enough, for DWJ fans or for fans of comics in general who are guaranteed to become DWJ fans after reading this.
I purchased this book through Flesk Publications' Kickstarter campaign. I absolutely loved this book. The reason I say that is not because of the artwork, which is amazing. Instead, it is for the commentary. There is a lot of commentary on the artwork throughout the book, directly from Daniel Warren Johnson. I found his thoughts honest and insightful, elevating this art book far above the typical art book. While I was familiar with DWJ's work, I realized I had missed some of the works, which I will now enjoy tracking down. I look forward to Volume Two in the years to come because DWJ has a lot more storytelling to go and I'm looking forward to the ride. If you are a fan of dynamic storytelling grounded in influences from Kirby to Manga, then this art book is for you.
Daniel Warren Johnson is my favorite comics creator working today. His comics are pure joy on paper. His blend of heartfelt emotion and stunning visuals makes him a creator unlike anyone else out there. This book was such an incredible deep dive into his process. The commentary and notes that accompany it made for a great reading experience, leaving me wanting to make more comics every time I picked it up and reminded me that I work in the coolest medium out there.
