In Bronx Boy, Book One of The Zombie Island Trilogy, Firpo begins his journey through the one way door of eternity in search of life's ultimate revelation. It is 1959 in New York City. A serial killer is loose in Central Park and a copy cat killer, of sorts, prowls Firpo's Bronx. Firpo is thirteen years old and his faith is being tested by the world around him-family, friends, mysterious creatures known as girls, even by his beloved baseball Giants.
Firpo confronts the confusion that comes with adolescence while the police struggle to capture the serial killer, and he and his friends strain their wits to identify their neighborhood's copy cat killer.
As events unfold, Firpo grapples with life's many mysteries, sweet and otherwise. In the process, he questions what place faith holds in his journey through life. As he closes in on the answer, Firpo realizes the journey has only just begun.
S.P. Moran was born and raised in the Bronx, New York. He retired from a career in civil service to a life of leisure. He is married and has three children. He and his wife live in Maryland.
Took way longer than it should have to read. partially busy, partially because, while quite entertaining, very funny, and i identified with Firpo (a name which, interestingly enough, appears inside of the book only one time i can recall), it kind of drug along. i blame this on the synopsis. i was continually waiting for some Big Adventure to happen, when, in fact, this was written primarily like a memoir.
this nearly could have been "A Christmas Story" fanfic. that sounds bad huh...but it definitely was reminiscent...
setting -- almost a year of a young catholic bronx kid's life in 1959. transition period between middle school and high school.
