Eastshore Isle #10

My Orc Billionaire

Rate this book
My new job is cooking for a grumpy, scarred billionaire…so why do I feel like I’m the one on the menu?

You know what sucks? In today’s world, there are hardworking people like me drowning under medical debt—F* cancer, amiright?—and then there are guys with way too much money. Guys who treat cash like a weapon, who shouldn’t get to be both rich and unfairly hot. Guys like Abydos.

When I finally land the personal chef position I’ve been desperate for, I figure working for one of these a-holes is going to be a nightmare. But for every scar I carry from surgery and survival, Abydos hides three of his own. He’s a grumpy recluse who takes his anger out on everyone…except me.

Why me? I mean, I know my Coq au Vin is delicious, but the way he looks at me has nothing to do with food. I’m just “the help,” and I’m not supposed to get involved with my billionaire boss. But under that scarred, surly armor is a male I’d risk everything to care for, everything to touch. And maybe—just maybe—the coziness of an Eastshore autumn isn’t the only thing heating up around here…

This feel-good, low-angst, high-heat cozy romance features the following Grumpy/sunshine, wounded billionaire boss, cheese as a love language, hurt/comfort, adorable small-town (of course), lots of humor, lots of heat!

Veronika Kane is the monster-loving alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling Author Caroline Lee. One of Caroline's favorite genres to read is SciFi Romance, which led her to monster romance. When she discovered it was possible to set big, buff, delicious monsters in contemporary cozy small towns, she was sold. And that's how she ended up with a new pen name and a new series.

Welcome to the town of Eastshore Isle, the only beach town on the east coast experiencing negative population growth. You know who's going to help save the town? That's right; super-sexy, laugh-out-loud orcs.

Just like Caroline's HistRomComs, except greener.

My Orc Billionaire by Veronika Kane
Eastshore Isle series #12. Paranormal orc romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but many characters from prior books make cameo appearances. Small town, super sexy.
The perfect job for chef Riven Starr is the live-in, highly paid personal chef position for Abydos, an orc that lives mostly in Colorado. The money is good enough that she can start paying down her medical debts. She just has to impress at the interview. She’s bringing samples of her best desserts to prove she’s the perfect person for the job.
Abydos is in Eastshore to placate the mayor in his goal to bring more orcs to the small town. He’ll hire a chef for his rare appearances and go back to his mine where the only humans are outside. Meeting Riven is a shock. First she’s a female, and second - she’s human! No. He can’t do it. Absolutely not. Until he tastes her plate of desserts and she stands up to him, unafraid and confident in her skills.
Abydos finds himself spending more time in Eastshore than expected.

Both Riven and Abydos have scars and past issues so they understand each other better than expected. Their relationship turns to friendship and lust turns to passion as they deal with their scars and move forward.

Steamy hot, passionate, laughs, and a bit of comfort in recovery. Plus conservationist plans on the island. I loved their similarities and how they helped each other.
Small town vibes, billionaire, sexy times, cheese, and cheesy humor. Want more? The sneak peak at the end says more orcs are coming to Eastshore. I can’t wait.

Really cute addition to the Eastshore Isle series. Breast cancer survivor Riven is thrilled to have an opportunity for a permanent full time live in position as a personal chef to a wealthy but semi reclusive orc.

Abydos has made a fortune in lithium mining and refining, and he’s happy to keep to himself. When his assistant unwittingly hires a human woman to be his personal chef, he just about comes unglued. After pushback from Riven, however, Abydos inexplicably gives her a second chance. Of course he ends up crazy about more than just her food, and lots of s3xy times ensue. After a confession of sorts from Abydos, some miscommunication throws Riven into a tailspin.

Can they resolve their issues and find their HEA?

I received an advance reader copy from the author and bookfunnel, and I’m sharing my honest review.

Small town cozy romance meets Eastshore’s most damaged protagonists yet, which really touched me more than I thought. Riven is on the hunt for a new chef gig that pays better so she can keep paying off the medical debt she incurred from breast cancer treatment. Although she’s in good spirits generally, she is physically scarred from her surgery and struggles with body dysmorphia because of it (a trigger kindly warned at the beginning of the book). She happens to secure the chef gig for Abydos, one of the Orcs who’s built a mansion on Eastshore and needs a chef and “permanent resident” in his home. But Abydos despises humans due to the damage he and other Orcs suffered at humans’ hands, and he’s walled himself off from the other Eastshore Orcs even though he moved there with them. This story quickly became one of my favorites in the series because of how deep the characters are. Don’t get me wrong, the book is still plenty light and fluffy, but Kane does a great job addressing some pretty weighty subjects in a respectful and appropriate way. Riven’s and Abydos’s situations are ones many people can empathize with on some level.

As usual, high heat, some hilarious jokes, and some endearing cheese references are present. Also, a cast of characters at the beginning of the book was helpful as a quick refresher, but you don’t have to strictly read the books in order.

I received an early version and voluntarily leave this review.

Oh goodness, this may have been one of my favorites in the Eastshore Isle series!!

I loved their meet-scare!! I loved how much he hated humans to the point of being completely distressed and angry when she literally walked into his life. I loved how she was scared at first but ultimately stood her ground because our girl needed her paycheck and she had faced far scarier things!

I loved watching Abydos grow to love the human(s) in his life and address his prejudice towards all humans for some horrid things a select group of humans did. I also loved watching him take responsibility for the impacts his need for revenge had on the environment and how he went about fixing it!

I loved how both Riven and Abydos were both scarred MCs: her from her breast cancer and him from the government experiments. I loved how because they were both scarred, they could understand the other one on a deeper level than others could, making them even better fated mates 😊

I loved how he took care of her when she was on her period!! He immediately smelt the blood, not knowing what it was, and he went into action to help her. Once he found out why he was smelling blood, he did everything in his power to make her comfortable, even calling a *gasp* human for advice.

I loved the travel off Eastshore Isle to Bramblewood Bluff where we got to meet more orcs!! I loved that Bramblewood Bluff is a mostly non-human town and other monster types lived there as well. Does this mean we’ll get non-Orc books from Kane in the future??

Finally, every time Kane gives us one of these sneak peeks into the next book, I become a greedy little orc hoarder who needs the story STAT!! I can’t wait for the next story to come…and then the story after that….and after that…you get it!

Thank you to Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

I love this series. As soon as I know a new one is coming out, it is preordered. I want to live in Eastshore. Each book can be read on its own, but I have enjoyed reading them in order. You get to catch up with previous characters. In this book we get the story of Abydos and Riven. Both were introduced in the previous book. Both of them have experienced trauma. Abydos doesn't like humans due to his experience, but Riven shows him not all of them are bad.

This is a fun, cozy small-town monster romance. It’s part of the Eastshore Isle series of interconnected standalones and can be read out of order with only minor spoilers. There’s a recap and a cast of characters from previous books at the beginning, which is a helpful refresher.

Human FMC Riven is a chef who’s had a rough year after some medical issues. She’s finally getting back on her feet and lands a fantastic opportunity as a live-in personal chef. Unfortunately, her new potential employer is grumpy orc billionaire MMC Abydos, who hates humans and has the scars to prove what they’re capable of. Of course, Riven has her own scars and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself.

I really enjoyed this book. The grumpy/sunshine dynamic between the MCs worked perfectly while still keeping both characters relatable. Abydos is surly, but his POV chapters reveal the depth and complexity behind his emotions. The story strikes just the right balance between fun and heartfelt, blending cozy romance with more serious themes and emotional moments. And don’t forget about spice!

This was another fantastic installment in the series, full of cozy fall vibes. I can’t wait to see what happens next with Riven’s sister in My Orc Mistletoe Mistake!

Spice: 4.5/5

Writing: 4.5/5
My Enjoyment: 4.5/5

Abydos has been through a lot in his life with humans. He has been scarred and left bitter. His assistant did not know in hiring Riven that she was human. Abydos lost his control and roared at Riven to leave and Riven was the first human to stand up to him yes she was afraid but she stood her ground. She needed this job to help pay for her medical bills. When Riven looks at Abydos she sees a very sexy Orc who is bitter and angry but she also sees a lot of sweet side that he keeps hidden. Through her food Abydos finds himself lowering his walls and opening up to Riven. She draws him in with her ways of taking care of him and catering to his needs and loves of different foods. This story is so well-written you hold your breath as Abydos starts to soften up to Riven and how these two come together. The chemistry is steamy and spicy and makes you smile at all the heartwarming moments. I enjoyed every single moment of this story and find myself feeling like I'm right there with these two as they make their way through the uncharted territory they are finding themselves going through as they come together. Once you start this story you are not going to want to put it down. Being able to read about some of our favourite past characters in this book and see how they are still going strong makes you smile. This is a must read!!! You won't be disappointed!!!

I know I say this for every book in this series but I just adore this series! 😄 I have been very much looking forward to this Abydos’s book. I have wanted to know what happened to him compared to what the others went through. He was always so much angrier than the others. And this book didn’t disappoint. We got to know his background and how he really feels about the past. It made my heart ache but I was so glad he shared his story. There is a lot of healing that goes on for him in this book and I was all for it! Loved it!
And Riven? Oh she was freaking amazing. I loved how she was willing to stand up to him and how just being herself helped him to see that not all humans are the same. She has issues too that he is able to help her overcome and it was beautiful to see them grow together.
There two were so perfect together and the spicy scenes had some heat! Absolutely adored it! Definitely looking forward to more!
I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Riven Starr is a professional chef who lost her job due to illness. Determined to get back in the game, and deal with her crippling medical debt, she applies to a lucrative job that crops up right in Eastshore. Problem is, the orc that is hiring hates humans. but Riven doesn't take crap from anybody and Abydos begrudgingly respects that. It doesn't hurt that her food is the best thing he's ever tasted either.

Their working relationship quickly develops into friendship as they both recognize another wounded soul. But friendship turns into something more as Abydos realizes his blanket hatred of humans many be severely misplaced and that Eastshore may be just what he, and the orcs that follow him, needs.

So What Did I Think?

It was cute. Abydos and Riven seem tailor made for each other and their story seems natural enough to be believe, which is a huge plus in my books.

If you are here for the spice, there is spice. In the bedroom, kitchen, living room...lol

This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a fast-paced, sweet and steamy, small town, contemporary fantasy romance between male scarred orc mining billionaire, Abydos, and female human chef and cancer survivor, Riven. I enjoyed Abydos’ shock at Riven being human and the way her presence changed his perspective on humans. I enjoyed Riven’s tenacity and chef skills. I adored the secondary character interactions. I enjoyed the steamy intimate scenes. I enjoyed the non-romance plot and the clever way the author has brought more orcs to the isle for future stories. I adore this setting and these characters and have so much fun reading them. It’s always sad when I run out of story and I can’t wait for the next two - they look fantastic!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Can I give this book a 10 star rating?

I have read every one of the Eastshore Isles books, and I have to say this one is the BEST one in the series. Veronika Kane's writing is top notch in this one. I have loved each book, but couldn't give an honest 5 star review on any of the others until My Orc Billionaire. The flow between the different POV's was smooth and never felt choppy. The writing style was wonderful. The characters really develop more in this book than any other one of her books. You truly love these characters and all their flaws. The content was relatable (despite the whole orcs aren't real), and I believe important to showcase our insecurities and the walls we build up to protect ourselves.
I think this book is a MUST read. If you love cozy romance, the feel of real world issues in a cozy setting, please give this book a try.

A grumpy/sunshine gem of a cozy romance!

Riven is a fiercely resilient human chef and breast cancer survivor desperate for a fresh start; Abydos is a massive, grumpy orc billionaire who has made an art form out of hating humans. Riven’s confidence and her incredible cooking skills help to break through Abydos’s surly, scarred exterior.

Both characters carry visible and emotional scars from their pasts. Watching this formidable orc melt for the one woman brave enough to stand her ground is incredibly touching. He doesn't just open his heart to romance because of her; he opens himself to his family and those he realizes are his friends.

Abydos's devotion and care for Riven—once his walls come down—is wonderfully heartwarming and swoon-worthy. If you are looking for a read that is low-angst, high-heat, and packed with feel-good moments, this is it.

Oh my heck! What a cute book. Abydos is a scarred grump who has some prejudices against humans (justifiably so). Riven is someone who balances him and softens him. I am always a fan of surly grumpy males and Abydos hit all the marks for me. This is a sweet redemption tale where the MMC discovers that maybe humans aren’t all that bad and that being alone might not be as great as he wanted it to be. This tale is low angst (like the rest of the series) but there could be some distressing situations (I.e. the FMC is a breast cancer survivor and the MMC got really really hurt by some humans). Overall, totally happy with the book. It gave me all the good cozy feelings and I am overall satisfied with the happily ever after Veronika provides. I’ll def read it again when I reread the series.

This was another cute book in the Eastshore Isle series. These books are low angst and high heat, which is definitely needed at times. It focuses on Abydos a reclusive billionaire orc, and Riven a human breast cancer survivor. She goes to work for him as a full time cook, despite Abydos’s aversion to humans.

I loved that Riven stood up to Abydos right away and didn’t let him scare her off. It was sweet watching him come around to realize not all humans are bad, even though he was hurt by them in the past. There was some lack of communication at the end of the book that caused some stress for Riven, but fortunately that got cleared up. As always the spicy times are hot, and I look forward to the next book.

4/5 on the Spicy Scale

So beautiful

This book was beautiful, heartwarming, spicy, and the FMC drove me absolutely nuts! But to be fair, the MMC wasn't really great on communication. So despite the MMC doing everything he could think of to be romantic, the FMC almost always took things the wrong way, thinking worst case scenarios. I understand that, I get it every now and then and call it my HDHD Anxiety Wars, lol. Poor guy just wanted to shower her with affection, but grins like an idiot, thinking all is well without even remotely speaking to her about his feelings and ditches her for a whole week! Ok so they both annoyed me a little bit. It was such a lovely story, though, truly, even if I wanted to strangle them sometimes 😅
And way to sneak in some knew orcs. I see what you did there. 😏

My Orc Billionaire
By Veronika Kane

Another delightful Eastshore Island love story between a human and one of those lovable Orcans (is that even a word??) This Orc is a cranky, reclusive, fearful, scarred, bigoted, asshole. His words. But he learns and wants to learn and his mate obliges. Anyway, after some angst and lots of humor, lots of steam and even more romance, they reach their happily ever after. And they both reach the contentment and peace that they had struggled to achieve. This gives me hope that maybe I’ll find my peace and contentment someday. Thanks Veronika/Caroline.

I love this so much! Every time we get to read a new Eastshore Isle book, I love the male character a little more so it’s no surprise I was absolutely obsessed with Abydos by 12% into this book. And note that by this time, he still wasn’t even nice!

It was so cute to see how things changes with the orc and how impressed he was by this little human female. It was so sweet that they both have scars in common and they are both so strong and stubborn. The little miscommunication trope in the book was just the perfect amount and it lead into such a beautiful ending which is also a new beginning.

Best Series!!

This story is about Abydos, a billionaire orc who hates humans at least until one female is sent to interview as his chef. Riven is the one applicant that it was narrowed down to by his assistant for him to interview. Riven is a breast cancer survivor and needs this job to pay her medical bills so she doesn't let him scare her. She helps him see that not all humans are like bad and they help each other heal in other ways because they don't see the scars, they see the person. I love this series so much! They are low angst, feel good and really spicy. Can't wait for more!

Two Scarred individuals fated to be together! Sign me up! Both Abydos and Riven have had their fair share of trouble and struggle to open themselves up.

There are lots of steamy scenes that are enjoyable. The characters are their own worst enemies, always doubting that what they have is real, causing all sorts of problems and challenges. Kinda like many people in real life. Nice to know there is hope when people work on it!!

Despite being low angst story touches some very sensitive and traumatic points and for that reason I wish it would be longer. There was so much potential in Abbydos character development, and I feel it is waste to not have it. The settings for both characters are great and I think if they would go slow burn instead of fast burn it would be better. But again, we would need a longer story for that. 😉 Maybe one day, author decides to give us a longer story, as really some concepts and ideas she creates, would be very satisfying to read if given a chance to have development with proper depth.

A Very Touching Story!
Once again we have a perfect mix of wit, action and falling in love with a superb happy ever after, which of course I just love! Oh, and lets not forget the 'cheese'!
The two characters, Abydos and Riven, both have something in their pasts which makes them the way they are until they meet and find a common ground which allows them to thrive and blossom.
Their story touched something in me and made me realise that if you work for it, healing is possible.
I have just finished reading an early copy of this remarkable book and am happy to leave my voluntary review.

Eastshore Isle is the setting of Veronica Kane's My Orc Billionaire, featuring breast cancer survivor Riven who has so much medical debt that she's desperate to get the job as chef to a wealthy man and Abydos, a scarred Orc who has been tortured by humans in the past and seeks retribution. Turns out his heart knows that Riven is his mate and only she can heal his scarred heart through love and food!

A Cook And a Mate

He didn't want a HUMAN to be in his bubble, let alone cook for him. That was until he sampled her desserts. He enjoyed all her culinary masterpieces, but it was when she gave him a tour of the town , he really saw her and her humaness. Also in the book there was an issue of body positive for both. Once they got over that, they got their HEA. And the Orcs of East shore Isle moves on. Read this series from the beginning and you will be hooked!

This remains my favorite Orc series cozy romance. I've tried a few others, and they just don't seem to hit as hard.
I loved Riven and Abydos - despite the rough start and the lack of communication on important topics - luckily his assistant was there to clear things up quickly.
I'm loving this series even as it expands more and more. They're a great palette cleanser book, and lighthearted balanced with real, often heavy issues.

Another lovely addition to the Eastshore family. This has to be one of my favorites I love a good grumpy/sunshine read, and Abydos is a text book grumpy (dont get me wrong the guy has his reasons)and Riven is a lovely ray of sunshine (that Abydos definitely needs).

Can Riven bring peace to our grumpy orc Abydos or it he to stuck in his ways to see the light and that things are not as bad as they seem.

When Riven starts her chef gig for the reclusive orc, Abydos, it does not go well. At least until she stands up to him. Her cooking and cheery manner start to break the walls around his heart toward humans. Soon, more is cooking up besides food. But Riven wonders if this thing between them will last since she is his employee. Little do they both know that she is his mate.

Great!

Loved how this played out that Riven was exactly what Abydos needed. And it's true what the opening said they are two scarred people who found healing and will continue to grow and heal together. Also loved the extra epilogue and the little slice of insight into their future!

Another super cute, fluff read when you need something soft and sweet. I liked the characters together and the smut was good but the "misunderstanding" made me roll my eyes. these two really couldn't have a conversation and just assumed the other knew what was going on? ugh. that's one of my big pet peeves.
