Mech Corps by Jake Bible is an audio book I requested and the review is voluntary. This is the second book I have read from this author and I loved the other one too. It is a great sci-fi novel filled with action, adventure, aliens, battles, suspense, high tech excitement, and more. Great narration that fit the story perfect. The plot, characters are well developed and the story was never dull. Earth is on the downhill, and humanity is looking for another place to live. On this one planet, they find a nice planet but the beings not happy to share, well neither would I! I wanted to glue myself to my tablet to continue to listen and not be without it until the end of the story. The only fault I found is that the word 'said' was in the story way too often. You just never know how often it is in there until you hear read to you. Great story regardless. The giant Mech Corps are awesome, who wouldn't want to control these in battle! 30 foot giant robot warriors! Aliens eat human heads to get the information and become smarter. Fun, fun read! The cover of the book is wonderful!

If you dislike mechs and descriptions but enjoy hours of pointless blather, you will feel right at home reading this book.

I was unable to finish despite trying repeatedly. I managed about 65%. Very little happens but you have a fair amount of characters who like to shoot the shit about nothing much. For hours.
In that time mechs were only in the story a couple instances and they did almost nothing and mostly referred to by others when they were. Descriptions of pretty much everything were lacking or missing entirely.

One character repeated the line "me and mine" so much that it became physically painful to hear. Literally. Not in the figurative literal sense. It was so overused that I suffered actual pain when it was said (I stopped at one of the points when it was spoken).

Narrator was tolerable but a bit weak. The only real complaint I have was that he pronounced chimera with a ch sound.

The duo of Jake Bible and Andrew B. Wehrlen once again pull off another gritty and grimy fast-paced military action science fiction story with their recent audiobook release called “Mech Corps”. The book follows a division of space marines who pilot large metal bipedal machines called mechs; mechanical robots. A quick glance at the book’s cover art give you an impression of what these contraptions look like; scary. With the population of earth needing to relocate elsewhere in the universe, military teams are send ahead to scout and claim new places for humans to survive. Invading and preparing a planet for human colonization may sound like a simple task, until our team meets an adversary who is more ruthless and powerful than anything they have previously encountered. It is a story full of action, friendship, and survival. If you enjoy space marine or military genres, you may want to have a listen to Mech Corps.

Blend together bits of Starship Troopers, a little from Alien, and some parts Old Man’s War and you have a good idea of what you will find within the pages of Mech Corps. The characters and story are not extremely deep or complex, but the action and battles are unrelenting. The book is like the opening sequence to “Saving Private Ryan” with its multiple detailed encounters. When a book opens with a loud cry to “BFI”, or brace for impact, you are thrown right into the action. Once on the planet, the team is dropped right into a firefight that gets the hostility flowing. You really get a feel for the chaos and panic that envelops the characters during the heat of battle. This team of close-knit marines as to stick together to survive the onslaught of cunningness of the enemy they face. Each of the members is trained in a skill unique to them making each invaluable to one another; much like a real marine group.

There was good interaction and collaboration between the team members along with quite a few jabs, pokes, and zings that fly between the characters constantly. At times, I felt these jabs were over-the-top, but I could understand humor was used between them to help take their minds off their ultimate goal which could have led ultimately to their deaths. I have never been put in such a high-stress situation as the book’s characters were, so I may have reacted in a similar way to deal with the setting. All of their focus and accomplishments lead to the acceptance of the newly formed “Mech Corps”.

I had no issues with the quality of the audiobook’s narration by Andrew B. Wehrlen. It seemed to be consistent from start to finish. I did not notice any audio artifacts such as swallowing or page turns either while I listened. I like Mr. Wehrlen deeper and rich voice for this book as it added a darker feel to the overall story. If I had one thing I would change, it would be the voicing of a few of the main female characters. I know it if difficult for a male with a deeper voice to properly narrate female voices, so if you can get past this slight matter, especially when listening at a faster speed, the rest of the book is enjoyable.

Parents and young readers, note this book is not intended for younger readers due to its extensive use of vulgar language, graphic violence and crude humor. Remember, this book is about war and the language used is not very flowery in the heat of battle. The characters also banter one another often with derogatory terms including sexual references and innuendoes. Parents of younger readers should be cautioned if they are thinking about reading this book. If you are easily offended by strong language, sexual content, or crude humor, you may want to find a different book to read.

In summary, if you enjoy quick action-packed space marine battles consisting of piloted 30-foot mechanical robots, I think you will enjoy Mech Corps. There is some unique technology and plot in this story setting it apart from others in this genre. The story flowed quite well and the narration was professionally done.

"Brace for impact"
Earth has become almost unsustainable. If new planets cannot soon be found for habitation, the human species will become extinct.. But they are proving far more difficult to find than expected. Until a near perfect alternative Eden is found. Trouble is, there is something already there and it doesn't want invaders. With the advanced team destroyed and communication lost, the Jethro is sent to find out what happened and recover survivors, if any. It is a ship with a bad boy reputation, captained by the notorious Colonel Jala Parveet with her 'Me and Mine' crew and disregard for rules and authority.

Written in three parts, the reader first meets Parveet and her crew before the arrival at the planet, the discovery of the enemy to be faced, and the ensuing battles. As with all of Jake Bible's books, the fights are vividly portrayed and easily envisaged. The emotional responses are visceral with some breath holding moments. But it is the exchanges between the crew of the Jethro which make this story so compelling, often funny, and with a feel of real people whose lives are so closely bound together in the face of danger. Each is so well characterised, they become far more than mere paper cut outs: they have life, vitality and the sort of joking interactions as well as the flashes of anger that only people who know and care for each other can have.

Narrator Andrew Wehrlen's voicing of the different protagonists breathes even more life into them, giving each their distinct personality as they speak, and his brisk, but almost offhand, reading of the text fits perfectly with the whole mood of the story. The only difficulty with the conversion of the written to spoken word is the frequency of the 'he said' 'she said' in the longer chatter and discussions amongst the crew; but even here, Mr.Wahrlen manages mostly to overcome the irritation which this can bring to the listener by underplaying these interjections, where possible, and, anyway, what is being 'said' by the protagonists is so enjoyable, such little things fade to insignificance.

A great cast of remarkable, very human characters in an excitingly unusual environment, make this story a fun and engrossing listen. Add in an excellent narration and it becomes a must read. I was very fortunate in being freely gifted a copy of Mech Corps by the rights holder, at my request and via Audiobook Boom. Thank you. This is an entirely stand alone novel with no obvious indications that it is the first in a series. However, if there should be a follow-up, I will definitely be purchasing it: I already miss the rough and tumble companionship of the Jethro's crew.

Review originally published at: http://www.lomeraniel.com/audiobookre...

Earth is dying, so the human race is desperate in trying to find another survivable planet. They found the perfect candidate, but this planet is inhabited by a very dangerous race of aliens, and none of the ships sent has succeeded until now. This is why this time they are sending the Jethro and its famous Mech Corps, 30-foot human-piloted robots. Also, the soldiers aboard the Jethro are no regular ones, so they are the last chance to secure this planet.

This is an action packed book with very few moments of respite. I think it would translate very well to the big screen. There are many characters and all interact in a very fluid way, with dialogs which seem natural. The dialogs are the typical in this kind of environment, joking most of the time to downplay the tension during critical moments. I found myself laughing at some of this comments.

Nevertheless the characters are two-dimensional, and this made it difficult for me to connect to them. I think one of the issues was that there were too many characters to be able to keep up with them. They were soldiers on the Jethro, and there was nothing of importance to differentiate them. Bible could swap two of them without me realizing it.

Although the dialogs were natural and fluid, I found the dialog tags too evident, intrusive, and repetitive. Dialogs were accompanied all the time by ‘Roar said, Giga said, …’. I know it is difficult to write a dialog with so many characters, but I think this book would have worked much better with less characters but better developed.

There were two characters though, that were a bit more developed than the rest, but they just appeared at the beginning and at the end of the book. I think the book would have gained if the action on the planet was interrupted by the action on the Jethro and these two characters more often. True that the action with the soldiers was very exciting, but I could not stop myself from wondering how the two women were doing on the ship.

Andrew B. Wehrlen did an excellent job with this book. I think it is extremely difficult to narrate a book with so many characters, especially if there are not many ways to differentiate them. Nevertheless, Wehrlen was able to do that and give distinctive voices to them. He also infused the right spirit in the dialogs, and this contributed to bring the characters to life.

I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

Boy do I like a book about giant fighting robots! Jake Bible made that notion very clear to me already with Fighting Iron 1 and 2. Check out my reviews for those at LARC-SciFi(dot)com/bookreviews. What could be better than Clay and Gibbons? How about the Jethro? A space ship full of battle mechs and the personnel to pilot, accompany, and support the big battle bots. It’s led by a woman who will cage-fight any of her crew that step out of line. They deal with hostile animal life as humanity seeks a new home.

Bible’s Fighting Iron series is told almost entirely through Clay’s point of view. I prefer to read and write with limited point of view characters because it is easier to get into the story without wondering who we are tagging along with. Mech Corps did run through a long list of POVs but the breaks were easy to follow and after the Jethro launched on the mission, I had a pretty good idea what was going on.

This story really got my imagination going because humans are the alien invaders. A couple of the characters even discuss the fact while they are buddied up and traveling through the jungle. I’m interested to see where this theme goes if the story becomes a series.

There was a reference to the AI from Fighting Iron about the cradle where the pilots sit within their mechs. I caught and enjoyed it! It also made me wonder if the cradle was the same stuff we saw in Fighting Iron 2.

One of the later battle scenes showed Bible’s ability to create suspense. A character has a Eureka moment that could save the day, but then gets tangled up directly, prolonging the battle as a result. Very well done! I was driving around woody western Maine and white knuckling the wheel while Andrew Wehrlen performed a variety of distinct characters. He really outperformed the virtual eReader I sometimes use. Since she’s virtual, I don’t mind telling you that she’s a bit monotone. Wehrlen brought Bible’s cast to life.

I was given a free review copy through Audiobook Boom at my request and have voluntarily left a review. Any review. That fact that it’s a good one is because the book is good. Which has nothing to do with how awesome I am. You’ll have to find that out for yourself @S_Shane_Thomas on Twitter.

Fast Paced, Gritty, Entertaining SciFi Mech Read

"Mech Corps," authored by Mr. Jake Bible, proved to be a fast paced, gritty, and thoroughly entertaining SciFi read, centered around the battle for a planet, between Mech troops and the planet's hostile inhabitants.

The story takes place in the future, on the remote edges of known human space. The Earth is rapidly plunging into the abyss of overpopulation, feudal/hereditary family corporate governance, and dwindling resources. Explorations for a suitable Earth-like planet have yielded negative results. That is until a planet is discovered, that would be perfect, except for the sentient xeno race inhabiting it. The initial military ship and force are wiped out, and the "Jethro," a unique ship and MEU, are dispatched to do what needs to be done.

Having read many of Mr. Bible's previous books, and in the interest of full disclosure, having had conflicting views on them, "Mech Corps," is one of his best. It showcases the writing talent he possesses, the ability to pen a fast paced narrative, and not get caught in the weeds, sublimating a good yarn, by obsessing over minutiae. There are minor glitches, but they do not take away from the story and the enjoyment it provides.

Readers who are "safe space" enthusiasts, crayon and coloring book addicts, the PC addled, should be forewarned: much of the narrative is crude, base, and decidedly vulgar. The military characters talk like real people, who depend on each other, willing to sacrifice all, and knowing their brethren will do the same.

"Mech Corps," is highly recommended, was fully read via Kindle Unlimited, and hoping for a follow on.

The combination of Jake Bible's stories and Andrew Wehrlens narration is hard to beat.

Jake Bible is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His stories are packed full of non- stop action, suspense and adventure. Add in a heavy dose of sarcasm and humor and his books are just plain fun and pure entertainment. This book is no exception. It's a very entertaining, engaging and enjoyable book. It pulled me in immediately and kept my attention from start to finish.

Great cast of well rounded characters. Love the strong female characters.

The human race is looking for a new planet to call home. They find it. This time we are the alien invaders. The Mech Corps is in for the battle of their lives.

Andrew B. Wehrlen once again does a fantastic job with the narration. He has a great voice that just pulls you right into the story and makes it come alive. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Great character voices. Great tone and delivery of the sarcasm and humor. Bottom line he is the perfect narrator for these books.

Mech Corps is a fast paced, action filled military science fiction story. The world is dying and Space Marines, who pilot giant robot type fighting machines called Mechs, have been sent out to find a new plant for the human race to relocate to. The only problem is that the planet they find has inhabitants that are not open to sharing and are very good at fighting back. This story is filled with filled with gritty action, suspense, aliens, humour, exciting battles and high tech. Each member of the Mech Corps has unique abilities and they work together as a team in order to survive, giving you the feel of what a close-knit military unit is like. As in life, there are some likeable characters and some not so likeable ones in this story. The narrator did a good job of giving all the characters individual voices and making you feel the tension and heat of battle. I enjoyed this fast action story but the two different, yet intertwined storylines could be a bit confusing at times.

"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
Andrew B. Wehrlen was the narrator who granted me this book for review.
This is something of an origin story about the creation of the Mech Corps as a political entity.
Jake Bible tells his story in an active voice that carries through.
I consider this type of story to be snacks for a journey. It is that role that it is well suited. The tale went quickly and was easily continued at my infrequent breaks.
The story, as an origin tale, leaves you ready for more of the same.
The characters are 2D but entertaining.
Wehrlen does a good job of distinguishing the different characters with voice and inflection.
He is a good reader who can improve a story with his performance.
Mech Corps is worth a listen.

Earth is searching for a new home since we’ve turned it into a wasteland. As we travel the galaxy we come across other inhabitants; some friendly, some not so much. The Mechs come up against beings they call Zenos. Evidently they look like a huge flexible spider or something that reminds them of an octopus. Anyway, put those two visions together and you got it. These Zenos were not only numerous, but intelligent. As Drop Ships and Mechs were overcome, the Zenos picked up their weapons and used them against other Mechs. Now this is a problem! Lots of action once the Mechs get into “the shit”. Quite an entertaining tale. "Lots of alien action and destruction."

I liked the characters and all the action in this story. The relations between everyone on the Jethro were terrific, a wonderful family. I definitely want to see another book after this one. What I didn't care for was some of the dialogue, maybe reading it would be different. The narrator says one or two words then;"says someone", then another character says one word, "says someone else",this goes on 4 - 6 times and happens a lot. I know we need to know who is speaking, but it just annoyed me a bit. If you enjoy sci-fi, I recommend this audiobook. I voluntarily reviewed this audiobook after receiving an advanced copy I requested.

If you liked Starship Troopers action then this is your kind of story , instead of mobile infantry we have a political battle for a new home for humanity and mech corp for battles on the ground against a very numerous and robust foe.
The story is quite good although the very very repetitive use of he said /she said becomes very annoying.
Narration is good although maybe some more obvious differences in voices would help with the repetitive use of said. Otherwise very easy to listen to.
After listening to this the first in the series I would definitely go onto the 2nd to see how the characters fare

Giving us some history to his space adventures

I haven't read a Jake Bible book I haven't loved. This story can be read alone, but it seems more fun to read all of his space adventures and Mech series. This book ties the 2 series together. The Mech series ties into the Zburbia series, as well.

Do yourself a favor, pay for Kindle Unlimited and read all of his books. You won't regret it.

Bible has a way of weaving together humor, sci-fi, horror and adventure and creating a whole new world you can't wait to dive into.
5 stars. Thanks for the entertainment!

KYAG!

Earth is on its last legs and there's a planet that could be humanity's saviour, shame it's already occupied. The mechs and their pilots have a battle ahead, it won't be pretty.
I loved it! As always the characters are diverse and mostly slightly crazy. The story is so exciting that I was glued from the outset and put everything aside to finish it. The pilots are the absolute stars of this book.

Now it's up to the crew of the Jethro to evict them and deal with a government that is badly in need of change.

Fun time

Always enjoy a Bible story..... Ha ha ha.
This was a exciting book with decent characters and a solid action driven plot. However the individual Mech battles became a bit too similar after a while. I did like the beasties in this story and found them relatively imaginative as well as scary. I don't see a sequel so will leave the story satisfied as is. I had a good time reading this book and would certainly recommend it.

BAM! POW! SQUISH!!

From the first paragraph on the first page to the last period on the last page, the action never stops. Hell, it never slows down! If you want a story with great characters, a good plot that grabs you by the tale and won't let go, get this book. You'll enjoy!!

I enjoyed this more than expected! The plot was gripping, and the main characters were interesting and larger-than-life.

It failed to get 5 stars, though, partly because of the excessive use of US military (and other) slang in the dialogue. This meant I often couldn’t follow the plot because I couldn’t understand what the characters were saying! It also meant I often missed what was probably intended as humour.

I also very much disliked the use of weird nicknames like "Chomps", "Rots", "Shock", "Giga", etc., which meant you couldn’t tell whether a character was male or female, and made them all indistinguishable to me.

Nevertheless very worth reading. I found no mention anywhere of a series or sequel, but it ends in mid-flight, so I'm hoping one will appear in the next year or so!

Good story

Very imaginative story with very creative & interesting characters. I do not know any fighter pilots so i do not know how close to reality these characters are though i imagine they are not quite as colorful or creative as these pilots are.
