Rate this book
Book one of Colors of Magick, THE WIZARD IN INDIGO, follows the story of Milo O'Brien as he wakes up on his 14th birthday to find that his father David has disappeared.

This is only the first of many mysteries for young Milo. Together with his friends Roan Rivera and Alyx DeLucia, the trio takes their first steps into a realm of magic, illusions, trials of character, and a duel to the death with one of the oldest and most storied mages in Arthurian legend.

Their future adventures will take them through many realms and will follow in the footsteps of the wicked sorceress Morgan le Fay discovering the secret magic she herself employed against the kingdom of Avalon thousands of years prior.

This story was beautiful. I'm a sucker for characters with realistic flaws, and showing genuine emotion, which this story did cover to cover. It isn't a story just about Milo, but a story about the world at large, shown in a way that is so easily relatable that it brought me to tears at times. I love the nods to other established lore with mention of Britannia, Merlin, and Morgan La Fey. For a first in a series this novel does a great job of establishing the world at large, telling the stories of Milo/Alyx/Roan, and showing the process of establishing a champion of one of the colors of magic.

Dare I say that we are looking at new series that is more inclusive, and more enjoyable than HP? I do dare. Read it and tell me if I am wrong. (I don't think I am)

I am now going to sit here and fidget in my seat until the next book is available.

In magick, different colors represent different emotions. In the case of The Wizard In Indigo, that emotion is grief. This book coincidentally came to me at a time when I was working through quite a bit of grief, stemming from multiple places and events. I found that reading the story of Milo, Roan, and Alyx (your new favorite trio 👀) gave me a space to work through my own problems while wondering how they would escape theirs. I was definitely stressed for them at points, and crying at others. Merlin was perfectly weird and quirky in the old magical man way, and his bird Quiva quickly became a favorite. Semi spoiler alert, but truly a valid crashout from Milo there at one point. Overall, I absolutely adored reading this, and can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes (and read it in the different orders available).
