Second chances, surprising revelations, and sweet, unexpected love go hand-in-hand in the tiny lakeside town at the heart of this charming series from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster.
When Pixie Nolan first came to Bramble, Kentucky, the abandoned and desperate young single mother found hope, healing, and a fresh start. With the loving support of her best friends—Marlow Heddings and her handsome Marine husband, Cort—Pixie is now happily raising her toddler son in a cozy cottage, managing Marlow’s thriving boutique, and designing firefly logo t-shirts that are selling like hotcakes. The past is behind her, and life is good.
She never expected to make an electrifying connection with a summer renter, a retired Navy SEAL with his own complicated past . . .
A rugged warrior with scars both seen and unseen, Brogan Rafferty arrives with an adorable baby girl in tow and settles into the lake house next door. And while he’s a stunning addition to the gorgeous scenery, it’s his caring devotion that captures Pixie’s heart—the way he gently snuggles away the precious infant’s cries, or swoops Pixie’s delighted little boy high in the air with his tattooed, muscular arms.
But it’s no coincidence that Brogan has found Pixie, and his startling revelations make it clear she’s the key to healing old regrets and building new dreams. And when a hostile stranger turns up with shocking accusations against Bramble’s new hometown hero, Pixie must put her own fears and heartbreak away for good—and learn what it truly means to trust.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for a temporary e-ARC!
Everything is calm on the surface, but underneath? Secrets, second chances, and one emotionally guarded Navy SEAL with a baby are about to flip an entire small town upside down—and I was not emotionally prepared. The Lake House by Lori Foster quietly wrecked me in that slow, sneaky way where you don’t realize you’re attached until it’s too late. Published by Kensington Publishing—huge thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the gifted ARC.
This story doesn’t come in loud—it settles in. It’s that gentle, layered kind of romance that builds through trust, through shared glances, through showing up when it matters. Pixie Nolan is no longer the woman who arrived in Bramble broken and desperate—she’s rebuilding, raising her son Andy, working, creating, and finally starting to believe she deserves something steady. And then Brogan Rafferty shows up next door with his baby niece Shayna and a past that feels like it’s breathing down his neck.
And listen… I love a broody, protective man as much as the next reader—but Brogan? He’s not just broody. He’s carrying grief, guilt, responsibility… and still somehow shows up with this quiet, steady tenderness that makes you trust him before you even mean to. The way he cares for Shayna? The way he instinctively protects Pixie and Andy without overstepping? Yeah… that’s the kind of emotional slow burn that hits different.
What really got me, though, was how real this felt. There’s no over-the-top drama, no unnecessary chaos—just two people who have every reason to hold back… choosing not to. And the kids? Andy and Shayna completely own this story. Their little bond, the way Andy proudly calls her “my baby,” the way their worlds start to blend without anyone forcing it—it’s soft in the best way, like watching something right fall into place.
And then there’s Bramble itself—the kind of town that feels like a character. A little nosy, a lot loyal, and always ready to circle the wagons when one of their own is threatened. Because yes… there’s a thread of tension running underneath it all. Brogan didn’t just land here by accident, and when the truth starts to surface, it doesn’t explode into chaos—it deepens everything. It forces honesty. It tests trust. And somehow… it makes the connection stronger instead of breaking it.
“At some point, you have to stop surviving and start living.”
That line didn’t just hit—it lingered. Because that’s what this story is really about. Not just falling in love, but allowing yourself to believe you deserve a life that feels safe, steady… and maybe even a little bit beautiful.
This is for the reader who doesn’t need high drama to feel invested. The one who loves found family, quiet healing, single parents figuring it out one day at a time, and a romance that feels earned instead of rushed. If you like your love stories wrapped in warmth with just enough emotional weight to make it stick—this one delivers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A solid 4-star read for me—comforting, heartfelt, and the kind of story you sink into when you want to feel something real without completely falling apart.
So tell me—are you picking the peaceful small-town life with a second chance at love… or are you still chasing the chaos? 👀
The people of Bramble continue to shine as the heart of this series, embodying the true meaning of community—steadfast, supportive, and always ready to lift one another up. Returning to this world felt like coming home, especially because I was thrilled to spend more time with Pixie and her son, Andy. They completely won me over in the previous book, and this story deepened my affection for them even more.
Pixie Nolan’s journey has been one of resilience and quiet strength. She’s overcome so much, and seeing her finally surrounded by the home, friends, and family she deserves is incredibly rewarding. Her growth since her introduction is remarkable—she’s thriving in Bramble, and it’s beautiful to witness.
Brogan, on the other hand, enters the story weighed down by loss and uncertainty. Becoming guardian to his sister’s baby girl, Shayna, gives him a new sense of purpose, but also a new set of fears. His decision to travel to Bramble—hoping to connect Shayna with more family after seeing her bond with Andy—sets the stage for a summer that changes everything. Shayna is the light that pulls Brogan forward, and their relationship is tender and deeply moving.
Neither Pixie nor Brogan planned on opening their hearts again, let alone to each other. But life in Bramble has a way of nudging people toward the connections they need most. Their chemistry is sweet, their vulnerabilities feel real, and the family drama that complicates their path adds just enough tension to keep the pages turning. The question becomes whether they’re willing to risk their hard‑won stability for the chance at something extraordinary—maybe even the ultimate fantasy.
This story is a perfect feel‑good read, full of warmth, healing, and the kind of love that grows from trust and community.
For the first time in a long time Pixie Nolan is happy, she's found a home in Bramble, Kentucky, has a job she loves, and a group of friends who are there for her everyday. Her life couldn't get any better... or, well maybe it could!
The Lake House is an emotional page-turner that is destined to warm your heart and leave you perfectly content. In this one we meet a mother who has seen the worst life has to offer, but has been lucky enough to discover the best of it too. Her new life in Kentucky is something she is quite proud of, she has friends who have helped her find her way and given her a chance at a life she never thought she have. They support her and her son and make them feel like they are truly meant to be there, to be part of their little community.
It's the perfect place to raise her little boy and give him the life she never had. She doesn't think she could be any happier... then she meets him, the handsome neighbor who stole her heart even before she met him. Seeing him with his baby girl completely melted her heart, and made her think things she never thought she would again. Love has been the furthest thing from her mind, but now she's thinking why not?
Returning to Bramble, Kentucky was something I was truly looking forward to, as soon as I read the synopsis for this book I just knew I was in for a truly special escape and boy was I right. Ms. Foster really created something wonderful between the pages here. It was emotional and romantic, full of joyful moments that made me smile, and had just a touch of mystery to keep my eyes glued to the pages! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Brogan Rafferty has been struggling with loss-friends, family, and hope. When a bundle of news arrives and kickstarts the rusty heart he thought he’d buried, Brogan finds a reason to keep moving and heads to the lake to hopefully find what he’s looking for. Except, he wasn’t planning on falling for a woman named Pixie, nor getting wrapped up in a fantasy…or could this be his new reality?… of found family.
Pixie Nolan has come so far from the broken shell we first met in The Guest Cottage. Her very large heart of gold has found a home in Bramble, Kentucky. With her son Andy, a slew of found family, and town full of friends, she is thriving and living her best life. Meeting her new summer neighbors d his adorable baby girl, Shayna, makes her realize she is missing something…but is she willing to take a risk and go for what she’s always wanted?
I was thrilled to see more of Pixie and her son Andy! Pixie stole the show in the previous book so it was a joy to see how far she’d come since then. Andy was a sweetheart and it was cute how he kept claiming Shayna and “my baby”. Brogan’s first few pages was heart melting to picture- 6’5 guy, gently bouncing a little bitty baby- cue the heart emojis! Super sweet. He was also really great with Andy and Shayna. For someone who also wanted to fly under the radar, he epically failed because, well, I don’t. think he could help himself from being him.
The Lake House was a very cute read. There is a very slow- burning romance between Pixie and Brogan and some family drama that pops up for Brogan to handle. Overall, perfect for a feel-good beach read.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley/Kensington Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
How is it that small children, and babies, “know” good people before adults do? I love their trust and honesty and Ms. Foster gets these two babies spot on!
Brogan Rafferty has had a very rough go of it. Not until he found a family with his SEAL brothers did his life start to seem…good? And then catastrophe. He’s had to move on in life when he becomes guardian to his step-sister’s baby girl, Shayna Raye – or Sugar as he calls her. To me, she’s become his focus and reason to live each day. And they adore one another. He travels to Bramble, Kentucky ostensibly to “get away from life’s drama”, but he’s really here to meet Pixie Nolan, who has her own story to tell. Pixie has had it rough – just as hard as Brogan in most ways – but she fell into her own found family when she herself showed up in Bramble. And she has a little one of her own, Andy, who is the light of her life. Shayna and Andy are a hoot! They don’t talk yet but they communicate in a language all their own. They are priceless. Cort and Marlow Easton are Shayna’s and Andy’s found family, Brogan’s landlords, and protectors of all. I’ve loved Marlow’s strength and intelligence, and Cort’s protectiveness (from their book/story) and they, along with the townsfolk, make the visit to Bramble extra special. I love how everyone pulls together. Of course, they could just be nosy but it’s all good!
Brogan and Pixie and the kids make a perfect family. Their journey to that HEA is sometimes rough and hard but the rewards are perfect for these four. Loved this story! Loved being back in Bramble. And loved Brogan and Pixie and Shayna and Andy and Marlow and Cort…
I absolutely loved the first book in the Firefly Summer series, 'The Guest Cottage', so there was no doubt in my mind that I'd love 'The Lake House' just as much — and I did! (Both books can be read as standalones, but you'll probably want to read the other book as soon as you're done with the first!) It was a joy to discover this second tome on Netgalley, as I'd read the 'The Guest Cottage' just a few months previously and still had the characters fresh in mind. I saved this book for a long, long, 12-hour train journey, and I didn't see the time go by — this book is a sweet, contemporary, feel-good romance to savour. There is no angst, no lack of communication, no fake drama, just two characters — Pixie and Brogan — who fall in love with each other and learn to rely on each other.
A special highlight was the central place that the two babies (that Pixie and Brogan care for) had in this book. The little ones were depicted in a very realistic way and were central to the intrigue, even beyond their initial "purpose" (i.e. the reason Pixie and Brogan meet) — the babies were present "day in and day out" in the book, two little creatures that attracted most of their guardian's attentions, rather than being an afterthought that pops up at convenient times the way it happens in other romances.
I love the way the author writes, it's very fluid, enjoyable, natural. I hope she continues this series (perhaps with the single mom and the policeman mentioned in this book?). One can hope!
We meet Pixie, she is a young single mother who is doing the best she can. She is happy and healthy for the first time in years. When she came to Bramble she had an infant, she was sick, and she needed help. What she was not expecting, was the wife of the man who fathered her child to accept her and become family. She also was not expecting to fit in and meet the man of her dreams.
Brogan has been through a lot; his mother wasn’t the best and his father left. He had a half-sister, who he didn’t find out about until she tracked him down. He was a SEAL, he was recovering from a mission that went bad, when he got the call about his niece. Now, he has one of the most important jobs, raising her. He came to Bramble at the request of his sister, and we are in for so many surprises.
I loved how so many surprises were wrapped up in this story. I felt like we were constantly peeling back layers. This story pulled me in and didn’t let me go. Brogan and Pixie’s story was sweet, and about found family, forgiveness, and finding the person that just fit in your life. These characters had difficult pasts, and I loved how they helped each other heal. Through it all, I believe that they found where they were supposed to be. I also loved Bramble’s way of accepting people into their community. These characters have big personalities, and I loved how they always jumped in to help one another. I am loving this series, and I cannot wait to go back to Bramble.
We are back in Bramble…and I couldn’t be happier. This time we are finding a happily ever after for Pixie. We meet her in the last book. Pixie was a young single mother doing the best she could. When she came to Bramble she was scared but knew it was her last resort. She was definitely not expecting to fit in as well as she has…and to make life long friends….and to meet the man of her dreams. Brogan has been through a lot. Parents that were anything but good parents. Being a SEAL and seeing things no one should ever see. Now he is renting a lake house in Bramble and has the most important job he has ever had…raising a child. When he came to Bramble he had a few secrets and boy oh boy were we in for a surprise…and I was Here for it. This is a well layered read that sucked me in at page one and never let me go. This is a sweet story about family….blood or found family. A story about standing up for what you believe in. Most of all this is a story about falling in love when you least expect it and figuring everything else out as you go. These characters had great depth and told a heck of a story. These characters had been through a lot separately and were finally where they belonged…with each other. This series is addictive. The characters all have larger than life personalities and are truly there for each other…no matter what. I’m so ready and excited to see what this author brings us next.
We are back in Bramble, KY where this time, Pixie Nolan and Brogan Rafferty get their story. Pixie and her sweet little boy Andy, came to town searching for help from a woman when Pixie was at her lowest, physically and emotionally. Nowadays, that woman, Marlow has become not only her boss but also her best friend. Both Pixie and her adorable little boy Andy are thriving. Brogan Rafferty and Shayna, an adorable two month baby girl, have arrived not only to rent for the summer the Lake House owned by Marlow and her husband Cort, but also with the intent of meeting Pixie and her son. In no time, Andy is enchanted not only by Brogan, but especially Shayna. whom he tells everyone she’s “my baby”. The meeting was intentional on Brogan’s part, but the feelings between the four of them were unexpected and wonderful to “watch”. Even with all the ups and downs, disappointments and revelations, this story is filled with heart. The physically and emotionally wounded warrior finds forgiveness, love , hope, peace, quiet and a second chance in life, and Pixie finds the meaning of love when she least expected. This story is also a reminder that the experiences one has as a child, will in fact affect the adult we become. Once again, this talented author delivers a thought provoking and wonderful story. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
In Bramble, Kentucky, a beautiful little 1 bedroom home sits by the lake. Near by is a bigger home that Cort bought to house his mother and himself when he came to visit on-leave from the Marines. He felt better knowing she was well cared for in this small, friendly town. Since then the Lake House was home to friends and family as needed while visiting. At times he would rent the small bungalow. When he returned to Bramble permanently he began cleaning and refurbishing all of the homes he had purchased. In this story Pixie is preparing for a renter. As Cort and his wife, Marlow are out of town she will greet Brogan Rafferty upon his arrival. When he arrives she is surprised to find him with the van doors open busily changing a baby's diaper. As she discovers, he has adopted his sister’s infant, Shayna. When Connie had passed away suddenly, he left the Navy. The Lake House will be published by Kensington Publishing Corp. on May 26,2026. Foster allowed me to read and review her latest novel via her publishing crew and NetGalley. This sequel to the Guest Cottage follows the incredible line of characters and towns folk. Readers will find that this next installment gives more information on Cort and Marlow’s story and introduces us to Brogan and his niece, Sugar. Upon his first meeting with Pixie we knew something wonderful would happen. It is a delight to read about their romance and their children. Do enjoy!
Pixie Nolan found happiness in her new life in Bramble, Kentucky, raising her young son, Andy, working in her best friend’s thriving boutique, and designing t-shirts and other items in her spare time. After her disastrous last relationship, she’s sworn off men for a while. However, she can’t help but be attracted to the handsome man renting the cottage next door.
Brogan Rafferty came to Bramble with one purpose. His goal was to remain unnoticed, accomplish his mission, and leave town. What he didn’t expect to find was a caring community, new friends, and love, but that’s exactly what he found. He’s drawn to Pixie from the start, loves seeing her with her young son, and the way she interacts with his infant niece, Shayna, who he’s now raising as his own.
Pixie and Brogan spend a lot of time getting to know each other and, in spite of wanting to remain under the radar, he finds the community welcomes him. He’s become a local hero in their eyes. When he reveals his purpose for coming to Bramble to Pixie, he isn’t expecting her reaction but is overjoyed with it. Then trouble comes calling.
I loved this story! I would love to see Brogan’s friend, Erin. be the next to find happiness in Bramble.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
THE LAKE HOUSE by Lori Foster Release Date May 26, 2026
Brogan Rafferty had a very rough upbringing. He didn’t feel like he was part of a family until he became a navy Seal and considered his team to be his brothers. After losing his whole team and being injured himself, he could find no good reason to go on. Until he gets the shocking news that he has a niece that is in need of him as a guardian.
Pixie has her own sad past. She came to Bramble Kentucky with her infant son, and she couldn’t have arrived in worse condition. She was alone and very ill. Cort and Marlow Easton took Shayna under their wing helped her get healthy and gave her a job. Now they are a part of her family.
There is a depth to the story that is so intriguing. Imagine being at your lowest point and the only person you can turn to is the wife of the man that you slept with. And then comes the gorgeous man with his little girl, and you instantly have a connection with him. And your son Andy also loves that baby girl and he keeps saying “My Baby”.
I love this one so much that I could actually see this being made into a movie. I absolutely loved the first installment The Guest Cottage. But this one I absolutely could not put down! Please give me a movie or a miniseries!
Thank you to Kensington and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Lori Foster brings the reader the second novel in the Firefly Summer series with 'The Lake House'. When Pixie Nolan arrived in Bramble, Kentucky, she was a desperate young single mother searching for a fresh start. Finding friendship and family with Marlow Heddings and her Marine husband, Cort, Pixie is now raising her toddler son, managing Marlow's new boutique and designing firefly logo t-shirts. Life is on the upswing. When she is tasked with the duties of welcoming the new summer renter to the lake house, she never expected the connection she would feel for him. Enter retired Navy SEAL, Brogan Rafferty and his baby girl, Shayna. As she helps him settle in, it becomes apparent that there is more to his story. She sees him in a whole new light as he spends time with her son, Andy and baby Shayna. When secrets are revealed, it only seems to strengthen the feelings they have for each other. For me, this was a return visit to Bramble, Kentucky as I have read the first novel, 'The Guest Cottage'. I was pleased to see second novel in the series because I was hoping that Pixie Nolan would have her own story. This novel gives us a look at second chances, unexpected revelations and love. A great contemporary romance that has you rooting for that happily ever after.
It was good to get back to Bramble, Kentucky, and connect with Pixie, Cort, and Marlow. This installment focuses on Pixie and her son, Andy. Pixie’s life changes when Brogan Rafferty arrives to rent one of Cort’s lakeside properties.
I loved Brogan’s character! It’s not often we read about a single man caring for a baby or with such an interesting backstory. Brogan arrives looking for a fresh start. He’s survived being an emancipated youth, Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, an ambush, and life-threatening injuries on assignment in North Africa, and now, he's solely responsible for a tiny life.
I appreciated a focus on our capacity for love and acceptance, on giving each other a sense of community, of deepening roots, and on gaining a real sense of ‘home’, but I’ll remember this one mostly for the idea that good people still exist and fate helps us find them when we need them.
The twist in this one was FANTASTIC!
If you enjoy second chances and characters who do the right thing and genuinely care for and help others, this one is a wonderful read. I would add that you must like children and want to read about young children to appreciate this one fully.
⚠️ two instances of swearing, closed-door fade to black romance
Another home run from Lori! This book just might be my favorite, but I seem to say that for all of Lori's books. In the second Firefly Summer novel, we have Brogan, a Navy Seal, who's had a difficult life and through tragedy, was named guardian of his infant niece, Shayna. Out of his element, he relocates to Summer Lake to get his bearings and figure out his next steps. There, he meets Pixie and and her son Andy, who we met in the first Firefly Summer novel, The Guest Cottage. This story is about self-forgiveness, healing and learning to appreciate what you have. Brogan tries to deny himself happiness with Pixie, but their connection is sweet and too strong. The interaction between Andy and Shayna is positively adorable. "My baby!" The two of them will melt your heart! There is a surprising twist in this story which brings Brogan and Pixie closer than ever. I love the bonding between Brogan and Andy, so sweet. Brogan, Pixie, Andy and Shayna make a perfect "found" family. Don't forget Cord and Marlowe and the entire town, who now accept Brogan for the hero he is. Oh, and add in an evil stepmother. Can't forget her. This is a wonderful story with all the feels and it's a must read. I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest and unsolicited opinion.
This story is about Pixie and Brogan. If you read the other book in this series, you will remember Pixie - and if you haven’t (while I recommend it!) this book gives you the necessary back story so you won’t feel confused. Pixie is a single mom who is thriving in Bramble, Kentucky with her son. She is running a boutique for Marlow (who is married to Cort from the first book) and helping with a rental cottage while Marlow and Cort are out of town. Doing that, she meets Brogan Rafferty, a retired Navy SEAL with a complicated past who is learning to care for his niece.
There are other reasons Brogan is in town, and I won’t spoil them, but it makes for a wonderful story as he and Pixie get to know each other and open up about their painful pasts. Add in some crazy relatives of Brogan’s and you get a sweet romance with just a hint of suspense. The town of Bramble and its citizens are also like a third character in this book painting a scene of a small town I’d love to visit! Overall, a great story and I can’t wait to see where the series goes next!
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book. This is my true and honest opinion.
This is a feel good book. If you read The Guest Cottage then you have met the people of Bramble, Kentucky. We met Pixie in The Guest Cottage where she was a scared, alone, sick new mother who needed help and had no one to turn to, and made a decision to ask her baby’s daddy’s widow, Marlow for help. As they became a family she understood what love, understanding and forgiveness meant. When Brogan showed up to rent the lake house Pixie was enchanted and intrigued, not just with Brogan but with Shayna also. As they got to know each other and got closer, Brogan came clean about why he was there after Shayna’s grandmother came and confronted Pixie about the whereabouts of Brogan. As Pixie fell harder for the two of them, Brogan continued to show Bramble and the surrounding communities why he is the man he is as he helps in different emergencies. As Brogan and Pixie continue to grow closer and form their family, Colt and Marlow also bring Brogan and Shayna into their family. It is hard not to love these characters and the families they have made.
This is the second book set in the charming small town of Bramble, Kentucky—a place overflowing with heart and community. Brogan arrives in Bramble carrying the weight of responsibility and love for his baby daughter, renting a quiet lake house in hopes of finding some peace. Nearby lives Pixie, a devoted single mom raising her toddler son, and from the moment they meet, the connection between them is powerful and impossible to ignore.
As Brogan becomes woven into the fabric of the town, he repeatedly steps in to protect and help others, earning the trust and affection of the people around him. What begins as a temporary stop slowly starts to feel like home. With two guarded hearts and two young children at the center of their lives, Brogan and Pixie must decide whether taking a risk on love is worth changing everything. Their journey is tender, emotional, and filled with the hope that sometimes the place you least expect can become the home—and happily ever after—you’ve been searching for.
How do you describe a book that rips your heart out in more than one way, then heals it in others? Brogan and Shayna and Pixie and Andy melted my heart. We are taken on a ride of pasts that aren't great, neglect and cruelty both in childhood and adulthood, and loss so profound it's difficult to think of carrying on. Soon a love stronger than any evil, and there are a few in this book, makes itself known. Until..... well, I won't tell the reader what develops and with who. Who the evil people are and how they are satisfyingly handled. Just know there are 2 adorable children, 2 adults that need the love they find, many, many friends who become family, People who should never have had children and those who are amazing as parents. So, sit back, enjoy. Have a tissue handy and be ready to be melted by 2 children under 3. Be ready for some fierce protectors also. I absolutely loved this book and its characters. I look forward who will be in the next book in this series and hope it is who I think it is.
The Lake House is number two of Lori Fosters Firefly Summer series but the author fills in enough backstory that it was easy for me to fill in the missing pieces without having read the first book of the series. In This sweet romance Pixie is settled in small town Bramble Kentucky with her 14 month old son and is now a loved member of the community. It doesn't take long, however, for ex navy SEAL Brogan to show up with an infant and we quickly suspect that he is in town for more than the summer break he professes.
I found this book to be very sweet, sometimes almost too sweet, but full of great characters and found family. The characters look out for one another and show the typical small town nosiness, but if you are looking for a closed door romance that will allow you to revisit characters from the first book and add more great friends, I think you will enjoy this one too. In this time of real life strife a visit to Bramble may be just what we all need.
Thank you to net galley and Kensington publishing for the e galley. My opinions are entirely my own.
I fell in love with Bramble, Kentucky in the first book in the Firefly Summer series by Lori Foster, The Guest Cottage, and couldn't wait to read this one.
Ms. Foster's descriptive writing made Bramble and the characters come to life throughout the story. Pixie has grown so much since her appearance in first book but still had doubts regarding her self-worth which is natural for a young woman with her history. I really liked that Ms. Foster wrote the story from both Pixie and Brogan's point of view. Andy and Shayna, the babies, steal every scene and are central to the story, never an afterthought, which sometimes happens in other contemporary romances. Pixie and Brogan develop both as individuals as well as a couple as their lives become intertwined with the community of Bramble. I was hooked from the first page and didn't put it down until I read the last page.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own.
A year later has brought so many positive changes in the lives of both Pixie Nolan and her now toddler son Andy.
The scared young single mother has regained her full strength, her confidence in herself as a mom and has finally realized their new life is almost perfect.
Pixie is contentedly settled into her home life and work routine when Brogan Rafferty rents The Lake House next door for the summer and both he and his adorable infant start stirring up wants and desires that are both scary and also long overdue.
Small lakeside town of Bramble Kentucky once again works its particular "magic".
Just as smooth and easily captivating a read for me as its predecessor, only this time with added charm via an infant and a toddlers’ interactions throughout.
The best kind of second chance/new beginnings story to enjoy from start to finish.
Oh my gosh, I so enjoy this series. This book is a sweet second chance beach read. Pixie is adorable and I love the backbone of steel she tries to hide. Not only is she a great person, she's a caring friend and a loving mom and her heart is so big. Andy is a hoot! That little one kept everyone on their toes and only added to the cuteness of this story. Brogan was a puzzle at first. It was hard to tell if his secret was going to blow everyone's world up or just change things up. Brogan and his niece stole the story. His love and compassion for that sweet baby girl stole my heart too. The way he tries to stay in the background and not be noticed was so funny even as he rushed to help those in need. And the fact that he has a heart as big as he is just made him all the more sexy and yummy. Pixie and Brogan are beginning their real story and I know it will be epic! Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Ah, Lori Foster, you've done it again. What a great story! Filled with stressors, great characters and an interesting plot, The Lake House was a joy to read. I loved The Guest Cottage and The Lake House was every bit as good. A fun series.
Pixie was so intriguing in the first book. She's had a rough start in life a lot of which was happening when she showed up on Marlow's doorstep. Who would have thought it was the beginning of a friendship transcending into sisterhood? Now Pixie has a chosen family. She's got people who love her, a great son and a job that's fulfilling and allows her to be creative, a talent she never realized before. She doesn't have, nor does she need, a man.
Brogan is not only a man in transition from the SEALS but he finds himself the sole provider for a newborn. And he's got a good reason to be in the house near Pixie. Liking Pixie wasn't part of his plan but he finds he does, almost immediately. They start spending time together and it's pleasant and fun. It doesn't take long for Brogan to prove his heroism and to start endearing himself to the town that doesn't take kindly to new people.
Pixie's son is besotted with Brogan's niece. He calls her "my baby" from the first minutes of seeing her. The toddler and baby are tight (in the ways kids that young are.). They even resemble each other in ways.
The story has great tension built in with Brogan's hidden purpose but his stepmother adds yet another, far more uncomfortable, level of stress. I always feel a story is better with good stressors.
This book was a great read and I loved it all. Read it!
Pixie Nolan is raising her son, living in the bigger guest cottage now, and designing firefly themed items for her friend and mentor Marlow Heddings to sell at her shop.
Ex Navy SEAL Brogan Rafferty comes to Bramble, Kentucky with his infant niece to stay the summer in the lake house on Firefly Lake, next door to Pixie. He has hidden reasons, other than a vacation, but isn't telling Pixie about it right away. But she isn't shy about showing interest in the handsome man who is a natural with both children and soon they are spending more and more time together.
This was a fun fast read. I had already read The Guest Cottage, the first book about Firefly Lake, and enjoyed it so I had been looking forward to this second book to catch up on the characters. It was definitely worth reading.
I received this book from Kensington Books through NetGalley. Thank you.
The Lake House is the next installment in Lori Foster’s Firefly Summer series, and much like the previous book, it delivers an easy, straightforward romance that’s perfect when you want something low-stress and familiar. This one does bring a bit more drama to the table, which adds some needed excitement and raises the stakes more than the first book.
That said, there are stretches where the pacing slows way down, and a few scenes feel like they linger longer than necessary, dragging the story a bit. While the romance is sweet and comfortable, it doesn’t always maintain momentum.
I do recommend reading the previous book in the series first, as it provides helpful background on the characters and the foundation of the story, making this installment more enjoyable overall. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book, given to me by Kensington Publishing via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. “The Lake House”, by Lori Foster, is a heartwarming read featuring two guarded but very caring, honest people and the adorable babies who will captivate everyone. I loved the honesty and the natural way Brogan and Pixie fall in love and how the babies are a fundamental part of the process. Watching them spend time, doing things together and enjoying each other’s company and the little ones is delightful. There’s a lot of ugliness, pain and sad things happening now or in the characters’ past but there’s also so much love, affection, kindness and tenderness flowing in the story. Even though there’s a lot of melodrama I liked that overall it is external and both leads are grounded people. The domesticity and the caring for the babies is cute. I appreciated the small-town atmosphere. I felt the story drags at times and could be shortened.
If you have read the first Firefly Summer book, you get to know Pixie and her son, Andy, pretty well. So, I'm thrilled the author chose her for The Lake House.
I loved getting back into this small town world with all their quirky but caring townsfolk, and I couldn't be happier with her match. Brogan was darn near perfect in every way. I loved how protective and kind he was. The way he stepped up to care for his half sister's baby will melt your heart. He just had this teeny tiny issue of believing he wasn't the good person everyone saw that he was. Good thing Pixie and the many people who come into his life in the town of Bramble teach him otherwise.
This was a sweet love story much like the first book in the series and I will happily read more if the author so chooses to continue writing and expanding the Firefly Summer series.
I really enjoyed the second part of this series and finished it in record time—it only took me a couple of days to read it all. For those of us who aren’t native English speakers, it’s easy to follow and generally doesn’t use words or expressions that are hard to understand from the context.
The story itself is very sweet, and the interaction with the children and the other characters is truly heartwarming. That said, as with the first part, I found it a bit too short. I think a deeper development in some areas—without falling into repetition, of course—would improve the overall result of the book.
In any case, it’s definitely worth reading, and if there’s a third part, I’ll certainly continue with the series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the advanced copy of the book.
