While I might not agree with every point of view that Dennis holds, I do strongly agree that he hit the nail on the head as to what is wrong with society today; feelings overriding values!! Doing what FEELS right for me rather than what IS RIGHT. Very good, thought-provoking read!
I enjoy listening to Dennis Prager’s podcast. He is very wise and a great moral authority. Some of the material in the book was very familiar to me from hearing his podcasts. The arguments are strong and there is much to be learned from them. This is not a book you can easily read a lot of at a time. It is philosophical and you gain a lot more from reading it in short spurts and having time to absorb and mule over the arguments he presents.
I wasn’t expecting the book to be the transcript of a talk with q&as that he gave students in the past. I feel it would have been stronger if he had formatted the book more traditionally.
I recommend this book for anyone interested in a deep book exploring the importance of religion and many more issues of morality.
Format was question and answer. If not in this format, the argument could have been made in a more succinct, easier to follow way. Loved the summary at the end that brought it all together. Although not always agree, love his logical and straightforward thinking!

In many cases, Memories, of our past-lives, are 'carried-over' into our next 'physical' lifetime, and are Remembered, after birth, at an early age, after a 'spirit' decides to 'return' soon after passing in their previous lifetime. The memories disappear, as we get older in our 'present' lifetime.
If a 'spirit' was a male, in 'several consecutive' lifetimes, and 'he' chooses to be a 'female' in his next 'physical' lifetime, sometimes his 'past-life male memories' interfere, and become confused (transgender) during the transition, and can't accept / adjust to the sudden change of being in a female's body, and he / 'she' is sometimes likely to feel more comfortable in a he - 'female' / female relationship.

Most 'spirits,' rotate often being male, and female in their previous lifetimes, and are better able to adjust to the 'change' in their current 'physical' bodies, are able to live normal lives, and continue to fulfill their missions (spiritual growth) while ‘evolving’ to reach a higher level of 'Spirituality.'
When an expectant mother has an unfortunate miscarriage, or, the infant is stillborn, it simply means, the in-coming 'spirit,' utilized its 'Free-Will' right, and made a 'Pro-Choice' decision, and changed its mind not to 'enter' the soon to be newborn's body.
In other words, the incoming 'spirit' became 'aware' of an unexpected imminent 'danger' to the 'spirit's' present mission (spiritual growth), and decided at the last moment to, a b o r t, and continues its search in locating another expecting mother, so it can be 'born again' in the 'physical,' and live out its new lifetime to its fullest, and complete its overall 'mission' - to further 'evolve.'
This 'Spiritual' learning process of ‘evolving,’ to reach a higher level of 'Spirituality,' and returning to God, by living in the 'physical,' hasn't changed --- since time began.
God loves us and gave each one of His family, His 'Freedom' gift of, 'Free-Will,' for us to make our own decisions, and choices in life.

Under God's 'Free-Will' Law - I cannot tell you how to run your life, and you do not have the absolute right to tell me how to run my life.
No fallible human-being, church, government, nor court, has the absolute right to commandeer our all-merciful Father's precious 'Freedom' gift of 'Free-Will, and ‘Pro-Choice’ from us, while we are on our 'Spiritual' journey to 'evolve' in becoming completed 'spirits' on God’s earth.
To force one's 'Free-Will' on another, or on an entire Nation, violates God's ‘Supreme Law of Freedom’ to humanity.

C) When God's 'Natural Law and Order' of Life between His Kingdom (Spirit), and His earth (Physical) is disrupted and severed, by Unrestrained Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the Cloning of human-beings.

These takes come off childlike. In his own words, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and right to teach… but I think readers should consider Prager’s only relevant merit is creating a short-form conservative media organization. He has a lot to say about other people’s lack of wisdom and morality when his own lacks perspective and experience.
This book. WOW! The questions, the ideas, the answers, the way the author/speaker presented his case was eye opening and mind bending. If you're someone who can't get passed people who say they are spiritual or religious and you feel their arent. If you're someone who thinks you're basically a good human so you've got to be on the righteous side of heaven. If you have been conflicted with people who have taught you that the Bible is law but you can't get passed some deep seeded morals/values you have that don't mirror the Bible. If you've been influenced by society/politics/education/circumstance/situational awareness and socioeconomic standards into how you think, feel, act and believe. If you have questions or your kids have questions or people in your inner circle have questions about why you believe or they believe differently and who is "right" or "wrong." THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU, MY FRIENDS. Anyone who knows me a tiny bit knows that I can get down with some very deep conversations on religion and I think of myself as a little bit of a "challenger" when it comes to what I've been taught vs what I've learned myself as I step into a deeper relationship with God. And my most favorite thing is trying to make sense of what I know to be true and find examples to make concepts easy for others to understand. This book took the majority of things I've wrestled with to find a clear way to say them and made it easy to digest but left me thinking about them for weeks. There were a few things the speaker said that didn't make me change my stance and even fewer things that made me think my values/morals are rooted wrong. However, the majority of what I read made me burst open my brain and start dissecting it with the questions that light up the pages. But, ,that's the beauty of opening up your mind and heart so there can be open discussions and conversations about hard things that people grapple with on the daily. I found myself taking the same polls the author introduces to his audience and then watching myself change my stance or become clearer as to why I do believe differently than the majority or the masses. And this book gave me the ammo I've been looking for when someone corners me about my beliefs. If you're religious, if you're not religious, if you want to figure out why there is such a difference between left and right and generational influences...this book is for you. This book encourages discussion and communications and the ability to think! It's a book that will now be passed off through my family so I can have people to discuss it with. And, I happen to think a few of these questions will be ones I ask to new friends I meet along this life journey to see where they stand on certain topics. I bought my first Dennis Prager book at the Borders Book Store at 5 World Trade Center in 1998. That’s my last memory of the store, as 5 World Trade Center was destroyed on 9/11.
The book had an unusual title: Happiness is a Serious Problem: A Human Nature Repair Manual. Though 14 years sober at the time, I was going through an emotional relapse following the loss of my Greenwich Village store and I was deeply unhappy. I sorely needed a human nature repair manual. I became a fan of Prager immediately and in recent years read two of his "The Rational Bible" series: "Genesis," and "Exodus."
The title “If There Is No God” is taken from a sentence in that first book I bought at Borders. It’s an exploration of how the belief that there is no God leads us to define good and evil for ourselves and thus to “play God,” as we say in AA. Happiness then becomes a very serious problem indeed, for left to our own devices it is in our human nature to self-destruct—and destroy others along the way.
Having read “Happiness” I was looking forward to If There is No God. In fact, I was very grateful that Dennis had found the fortitude to put the book together after the accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Though I benefitted from the book, however, I must admit that the benefit was limited by the fact that the book was written for a difference audience, written really for high school students.
Yet If There’s No God served a useful purpose. It inspired me to take Happiness off the shelf and read it again for a third time. Twenty-eight yeas later, I found that as rewarding as the first two times. And once again I gave God thanks for giving us Dennis Prager.
I was very disappointed with this title. Normally, Dennis has such groundbreaking ideas that are worthy of being in a book. For example, his one book Still the Best Hope is a must read for all Americans. The problem with this book is it was basically a lecture that he put into a book.
Lectures read very different from books because books are much more well thought and can incorporate much grander ideas in my opinion. I’m always impressed with Dennis‘s lecture skills and his ability to think on the fly, but I was really expecting something thought-provoking instead of just listening to him debate with ignorant college students.
This was a copy-paste book which I really think was a waste of my time. I absolutely adore and love Dennis Prager, but you could listen to his fireside chat and make better use of your time than to read this book
Definitely some wonderful topics addressed. A book to be contemplated and absorbed slowly to let his points sink. I wish the book was set up into chapters and topics which I think could have been an easier read.
With the 250th birthday of America, it reinforces what our founders stated in our Declaration of Independence. Those whom believe in a creator (which our country is founded on) helps us have a moral code derived from our creator. If not for that fact people would believe in only people and in forming laws based on their feelings. Frightening to think we have many trying to prove that point today.
Topics discussed unfortunately will not be read by those that need it most. We can only hope that believers spread the news and keep our America an exceptional place to live.
This really is a great read done in a different way as Dennis answers many questions from a young audience regarding God, evil, suffering in the world, feelings or opinions versus beliefs or values, faith requires reason, how to know what truth is, etc. Also included at the end is Appendix I: The Death Penalty for Murder is a Moral Cornerstone of Society" and Appendix II - "Why God is Depicted in Male Terms". There are so many nuggets in here scattered throughout that Dennis gives his young audience. This is well worth the read since it reflects the years of sage wisdom and advice that he has authored and offered concerning these topics.
Prager leads with a groundbreaking approach to develop an argument for the necessity, not the existence, of God. From start to finish, Prager formats the book as a discussion, based off a school engagement he had years ago. It is accessible, reasoned, logical and brutally honest.
If There Is No God will be mandatory reading for my children one day, and a book I continually reference back to in my own personal life.
No matter your beliefs, or lack thereof, you will find this book of great value - and as a bonus, a very quick read.
If There Is No God: The Battle Over Who Defines Good and Evil is an excellent book and enlightens the reader regarding the difference between feelings and values. Young people should read this book because it makes one think about why there is a lot to consider when raising children and giving them a firm foundation about making choices in their lives. Everyone who reads the book will gain a better understanding about what is missing in today's world and how to correct the way people make judgments and decisions.
Dennis Prager dialogued with young people with thought provoking questions as he related why God should be an important part of their ethos, their lives. In the last part of the book Dennis Prager gives an answer as to why there should be a death penalty. Having "read" the book by audiobook it was harder for me to absorb all the author said than by reading a physical book. This kind of book needs time to re-read and really think about the arguments for why God is important.
Clarity in assessing values vs feelings & other guiding subjects
Brilliant, straight talk about the importance of Values upon the stability of society: not just values, but where they are derived & how they impact behavior. I intend to reread portions to better grasp its concepts so I can share them.
This book is based on the transcript of an event Prager held for teenagers in 1992 and is structured as a dialogue between the speaker and audience members. Prager has, however, obviously added material to update the material for more recent cultural developments; I feel it would have been more transparent to bracket off these additions than to elide them into the original transcript.
This was a very provocative book to read. Prager presented his thoughts clearly, but is it fair to impose western Christian/Judea values, morals & laws to all religions & people of the world. Must all people marry into the same religion as their spouse? I found some of his ideas antiquated for the divese world we live in today.
I had hoped for a more philosophical or insightful review of the issue. Instead, rubbish. In addition to several factual inaccuracies within the opening chapters, the approach to considering the nature of these questions is structured poorly. Wouldn’t hold water in an undergrad philosophy class. Read the classical works instead.
I was not familiar with Dennis Prager before this book but I loved his logic and his easy to understand examples. Rather than a book, this was more of a transcript from Q&A with teenagers over a several day period. I look forward to reading more of his work.
Really found this audiobook academically inspirational. Sounds strange, but Prager's view on values vs behaviors makes perfect sense. I wish this book would have been available when I was a young adult and I hope other young adults will read it.
I don't always agree with everything Dennis Prager has to say but I respect his practical and insightful approach to discussing Old Testament writings. He's fascinating and knows how to speak to people in ways that they can relate to.
I am so glad I read this. Great look at where we get our values from and why it is so important to know the difference between values and feelings. I would want all my friends to consider reading this.
Good question and answer session with Dennis Prager on Judeo Christian values. The rational explanation of why values matter to our society is spot on.
I really, really like Dennis Prager and all his great 5 minute videos to use as a learning tool so I was excited to read this book. He is very smart and easily explains everything; however, this book was a 3.5 for me. I didn't think he would be doing the book as a Q&A and just hearing some stupid questions made it harder to read. But I love his values, faith, truth speaking and he doesn't stop which is what this world needs….faith, truth and values!
