Averted

Rate this book
She was determined to avert her heart,
He was determined to claim it.

What happens when a badass model in the midst of her master plan for revenge gets distracted by a pair of brown eyes?
Her desperate need to escape her feelings only seemed to pull him closer. She was set on averting. Too bad she came across one stubborn motorcycle riding distraction.

I was a puppet, the strings pulled by my parents. A Barbie doll brought up to sit still and look pretty, preferably with my mouth shut. Feelings were a foreign concept. That was until I locked eyes with a bad boy with a killer smirk. He was a distraction I couldn’t afford. I had dirty secrets to expose, my plan already set in motion. I was determined, focused, all in… Until Mateo.

She was a vision, looking so innocent while screaming trouble. Butterflies were flying around, a magnetic pull so strong, but she managed to turn the poles, fighting me every step of the way, not allowing me to get closer. The more she pulled back, the more I wanted to figure her out. She had her walls firm in place, but I was going to break them, brick by brick. No matter how hard Sabrina wanted to keep up the aversion, I was going to be the one she’d let in.

This was an engaging story with a charming meet-cute at its heart. The female lead, Sabrina, raised in privilege but without much warmth from her parents or home life, brought an interesting contrast to the narrative. Her background added depth to the romance.

Mateo stood out as one of the most compelling characters. Though portrayed as young and in college, his maturity was shaped by the circumstances of his upbringing. He managed to be both soft and sensitive, yet undeniably strong—a balance that made him feel real and relatable.

My favorite character, however, was Eva, affectionately known as “Mama.” She radiated wisdom, resilience, and love, and presence. I would love to see an entire book dedicated to her life story because it feels like she has so much more to share.

Overall, this was a good story with memorable characters and heartfelt moments. My only critique is that the cast was quite large, at times almost too many, which occasionally made it harder to stay focused on the central relationships. Still, the warmth and emotional depth carried the book through beautifully.

Averted by Lena Knight is a gripping, character-driven story that pulls you in from the very first chapter. Knight blends emotional tension with sharp, high-stakes twists, creating a narrative that feels both intimate and cinematic. The pacing is tight, the worldbuilding vivid, and the moral dilemmas at the heart of the story linger long after you turn the final page.

What really stands out is Knight’s ability to write flawed, compelling characters whose choices feel real—and whose struggles keep you rooting for them even when the path gets dark.

If you enjoy thoughtful, fast-paced speculative fiction with plenty of heart, Averted is absolutely worth the read.

My first by Lena Knight. I enjoyed reading her book! It was something different that I needed. It was light, airy, funny and of course smut. Her reference from Revenge I got instantly. I loved that show! I saw the playlist and enjoyed many of the songs she had listed. Noticed “Boys II Men” and it is spelled wrong I fell for that a long time ago myself. My friends and I made a tshirt stating Boys. In the chapter she spelled it right to Boyz. End of the road is such a good song. Anyway, I enjoyed the plot of the book it made me want to read the next chapter. All and all a good book!

This story follows Sabrina, a young woman burdened by family expectations and lifelong grooming to uphold the family name. With constant scrutiny and pressure defining her every move, she’s sworn off getting involved with anyone new. Her only real escape comes from nights out dancing and drinking with friends—brief moments where she can simply be herself.

Enter Mateo, who falls hard the moment he sees her. Despite Sabrina’s resistance and emotional walls, Mateo is determined to earn her trust and prove that he’s someone she can rely on. As their paths intertwine, he shows her that family isn’t limited to the one you’re born into—it can also be made of the people who choose you and stand beside you.

This is a fun yet emotionally resonant story about self-discovery, being truly seen, learning to love, and embracing the concept of chosen family. It balances heartfelt moments with lightness and warmth, making it an engaging read for anyone who enjoys character-driven romance with real emotional depth.
