Mystery runs deep along the Grand Strand. Deeper than the tides. Older than the oaks.
Along the South Carolina coast, the marsh breathes secrets to life, and the riptide carries stories that linger just out of reach. Some half-remembered. Some half-believed.
In Short Stories from the Grand Strand, four acclaimed authors—Kelly Capriotti Burton, Lisa Borne Graves, Maegwen Salley-Massie, and Caleb Wygal—offer a haunting mosaic of mystery, memory, and myth set amid the windswept beauty of the Grand Strand. Rooted in coastal folklore and enriched with new imaginings, these tales revisit familiar legends while breathing life into new ones. Blending the eerie with the elegiac, this collection explores the thin spaces between past and present, truth and legend, the living and the lost.
Each story pulls Detective Phil Moody of the Myrtle Beach Mystery Series into legends and enigmas stranger than any case file—storms that defy reason, secrets the marsh refuses to bury, and ghosts that never fade.
Three threads connect them a sudden storm, a night at Drunken Jack’s, and Phil Moody himself, caught between truth and legend.
Some mysteries don’t need to be solved. Only witnessed.
Overall this was a very nice book, essentially 4 shortish stories that take from local legends of the Grand Strand by 4 local authors. That said, I like the 1st and last stories the best. Creek Rat Jax by Meagwen Salley-Massie, and Dead Ringer by Lisa Borne Craves. The type of story telling that is hard to put down once you start. I am going to have to look into those two authors more. but don't just skip over the other stories, they are good too. I've read another book by Caleb Wygal, it was good, and I recently bought another of his books at a local festival (we live in the same town), that I am looking forward to trying. Honestly I am hoping to see improvement over his other book. While good, it showed some promise that I am hoping he develops into being an even better author. Great idea for a book, and a great way to bring attention to some local authors on the Grand Strand. I love the beach (the Grand Strand), I love a good book, I love to meet and support local artists that show promise, and the beach seems to attract a lot of them. These 4 authors are worthy of such support.
A very clever anthology! All stories are linked by a common thread. I normally feel that anthologies are such random short stories and that’s why I don’t normally want to read them. This was so different to me. I feel each story could have been part of a longer story consisting of different snippets of one person’s life. All the authors did a great job!
