Cale is more famous than ever after quashing an invasion in his hometown. Unfortunately for our wannabe slacker, more attention equals more responsibility—especially since his bold moves messed with the novel’s plot! In a bid to weaken the Indomitable Alliance, he partners up with the Whale Tribe for an assault on the enemy’s frozen shores. Knowing it’ll take more than one battle to come out on the right side of history, he decides it’s time for his homegrown heroes to take center stage! Yet even Cale has no clue how far these powerhouses will go for the redheaded lout who gave them a second chance at life.
I was in the mood to binge re-read this novel. Now I realise that, if I want to continue with the official translation, I'll have to wait. YEARS! Seven Seas is only publishing 4 volumes a year, covering a total of ~160 chapters of the web serialisation. That's 4 years considering it's 776 chapters long! I wish they took more time to prepare in the beginning so they could publish more volumes a year.
I read the webnovel version, and trust me, the novel is way better than the comic adaptation. So many things in the novel just don't come across as well in the comic (still love both though!). Plus, the author is amazing at plot development, utilizing characters, and especially tiny details. Things you think are insignificant will pop up hundreds of chapters later and then surprise you. Honestly, that's a huge plus for me!
The war is still raging. Cale has prepared enough to give him a few initial victories, but his enemies are adapting. Crucially, Cale needs to win without showing all his cards---because the real enemy is Arm, who is manipulating everyone.
This volume continues the war arc, with several major battles interspersed with a few small adventures in the downtime.
I like seeing the focus on the other characters. Choi Han's backstory has been explained before, but I like the extra insight we get into his aura and who he really is underneath it all. Because it just makes SENSE that this poor kid couldn't possibly have survived hundreds of years fighting for his life without majorly breaking. Cale has been a true light of hope for him---and ironically, that makes it harder for him to achieve mastery, since Cale keeps erasing the various events that should have brought him to a deeper darkness.
Lark also gets a nice bit of focus near the end. He's an earnest kid, but still just a kid, and he's crumpling under the weight of the expectations he's placing on himself. This one isn't fully resolved this volume, but the pieces are there for a big finish.
Of course, my favorite is what happens with poor Clope Seca (or should that be poor Cale?). Cale's attempt to persuade the enemy swordmaster has worked a little too well, and Clope's conclusion is a riot. Now Clope is dangerous in an entirely different way . . .
I also love how Cale freaks out over the threat to the barrier stone at a moment when he can't afford any distractions . . . and what actually caused the problem.
Overall this is a fun volume. Although various battles are intense and epic, I prefer the smaller moments between the fights, or the character insights during the fights. I can't wait for the next part to drop. Highly Recommended.
Man, when war hits the fan, that's when everything gets a bit more real. I loved the way that each battle was different - Operation Ghost was flawless and I'm interested to see if Valentino coverts to our side. With Raon down for the count for the next battle though, I'm already nervous about what will happen in the next volume!
