First time reading Harold Coyle, but won’t be the last. His A Savage War of empire stands high in my other novels about the Indians wars in 1700’s America. It belongs with Allen Eckert history’s series Wilderness and Coopers Last of the Mohicans and the Deerslayer. Coyle doesn’t copy either writer, he is completely his own author. His characters are well drawn out from the main to the common ones. His battle scenes are surprisingly well written, either attacked in the woods or the forts. Very good historical fiction, recommended.
Harold Coyle, the author, is a very good writer of historical fiction. He wrote a series of books in the 1980s about war with Russia in Europe, in the late 80s.
This book is very well researched and written. It has historical figures such as George Washington and General George August Howe. There are several fictional characters that keep the narrative going and give insight into the mindset of the French, English and colonial soldiers. There is also a thread that follows two Native brothers as they support the French in this war.
There is no surprise ending to this story. I you know the history of the 7 Years War, or the French and English War, you know the ending. However, Coyle doe manage to make this retelling very enjoyable and very readable
I hope Harold Coyle is writing a sequel to this, dealing with the calm between this War and the Revolutionary War.
This the second book I have read by Harold Coyle, I was given a free copy of "A Savage War of Empire: A Novel of the French and Indian War" via LibraryThing. This book was a interesting and intense as the first one. I love history so it's great to find a great writer of historical fiction. That is what Harold Coyle is. The book was very interesting and well worth reading if you like historical fiction.
This book is the same or very similar to the author’s previous book Savage Wilderness. I really resent that I didn’t realize it before I bought it since I read the Savage Wilderness back when it was released.
It’s a good story. I just think it’s a scam to release the same book under a different title as a new book.
