This direct sequel to A Lit Wick offers another searing collection of poetry and short stories, carefully balancing the zen and chaos that echo these tumultuous times. From travel to nature, finding yourself, losing yourself, regret, love, war, and grief, this insightful and sensitive tapestry urges its readers to begin their own journey inward to understand who they are.
"Genuine, unrelenting, real. EVERYTHING IS BRIGHTER NOW reads like a secret diary that we are lucky enough to have access to." - Michelle Joy Gallagher Soffe (Author of Library on Fire)
"Through raw imagery and quiet revelation, EVERYTHING IS BRIGHTER NOW maps the fragile light that survives even the darkest nights." - Shawniee Suvero (Author of Between Sand & Sky)
Everything is Brighter Now by Christopher Charlton is one of those books that grabs you right away and keeps pulling you back for more. It is a mix of poems, song lyrics, and short stories, and is such an easy read but packs a lot of power. Many of the poems have the natural cadence and rhythm and force of slam poetry or beat writing. When I read them, I am immediately transported to a coffee shop where I hear them being performed on a stage. The writing feels urgent and very current with what is happening in the world right now. Some pieces lean into political and social issues in a way that really makes you stop and think, especially “The Fire is Coming From Inside the House” and “Buy This Book.” At the same time, some of the poems are strongly pro-feminist or at least as I perceive them, which I really appreciate. It gives the collection a sense of awareness and respect that makes the voice feel even stronger.(“March”, “All the Every Daughter”)
The short stories pulled me in just as much. The protagonist “Mitch” becomes someone you genuinely care about and keep wondering about after you finish the page. The stories feel honest and personal, like you are getting small glimpses into a life shaped by experience, mistakes, love, and growth. This book has heart, it has something to say, and by the time you close it, the title feels exactly right.
This book of poems and short stories is beautifully written, emotionally rich, and perfect for moments of reflection. Each page invites you to pause, think, and feel. A wonderful compliment to the first in the series.
Everything Is Brighter Now by Christopher Charlton is hands down one of my most favorite books that I got to read this year! It is an intimate collection of poetry and stories, from Christopher, that I found to be deeply engrossing. The writing has such beautiful detail! Loved It 🖤
