Rate this book
Maybe her boss wasn’t Satan after all. Maybe she was something a vampire.

After having been under the thumb of her family and in the closet for her whole life, recent college grad Cassielle “Cass” Silver just wants to get away from it all and build her own life. She’s landed her first real job and is eager to start, though there’s just one tall, intimidating, and very attractive her boss, who appears ready to fire Cass at any moment.

Vampire Lucina Graves is on the cusp of making one of the most ambitious moves of her career, and the only thing getting in her way is having to babysit the nuisance of a newbie that was just hired onto her team. Even if the new girl’s blood smells better than any she’s ever had, some things just aren’t worth the trouble.

But when circumstances force them to work together more closely, Lucina begins to realize that she likes more about Cass than the taste of her blood—and that’s a problem. She must put a stop to this before it turns into the same cruel disaster love has always been before.

When feelings aren’t allowed on the menu, is love something they’re able to risk reaching for?

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up

The synopsis piqued my interest, and I've dabbled in the supernatural genre here and there, but in the end, this one was fine. I will say that Cass' background story was interesting, and I rooted for her to find her place in the world, but I couldn’t connect with Lucina. I didn’t see the chemistry between the characters. Oh, the hypnosis just left a bad taste in my mouth. On the one hand, I understood why the vampires did it, but on the other hand, it made my stomach turn. The slow burn didn't bother me as much as how long it took for Cass to realize the truth. This wasn't a bad read, I just thought it was fine.

Wonderful book 2 (standalone) of the Lesbian Vampire romances by Michelle St. Wolf! While both books are standalones, they are also interconnected and I’d recommend reading The Accidental Bite first. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I thoroughly enjoyed our new MCs, Lucina and Cass, as well as seeing lots of Lilliana and Dara throughout the story.

I love the build up of the main relationship, almost enemies to lovers in the beginning. The tension, the softening, the revelations kept my interest and the story moving at a good pace.

If you enjoy sapphic vampires then I highly recommend both of these books!!

It was so much better…

…than the first book.

Don’t get me wrong—I liked the first book and its characters well enough, and it was nice to see them again here. But I really enjoyed the MCs, Cass and Lucina. Lucina was funny and made me laugh so much. She was determined to chase off anyone who might threaten her chance to even occupy Tess’s time and heart, and her jealousy felt justified.

Cass was really sweet and kind. However, I had a bit of a hard time with her religious leanings. I noticed her immaturity multiple times, which made it harder for me to fully believe in the relationship between them. There was too much beating around the bush instead of saying what they truly felt, leading to unnecessary misunderstandings and miscommunications—many of which felt quite pedestrian.

I also felt that Lucina carried most of the relationship, though she had her own moments of immaturity. At times, she wasn’t forward enough to ask the unspoken questions, see what was right in front of her, or be as forthright in her personal life as she was in her professional role.

Cass repeatedly put herself in danger, and Lucina, by playing the gentlewoman and waiting to make things more permanent, also put both Cass and their relationship at risk—Samhain being a clear example. Cass was nearly taken advantage of. Once you enter the supernatural world, you need to be protected. Becoming a dhampir seemed like the obvious path, because without the mark, anyone could take advantage of her blood.

I have very mixed feelings about the idea of being “drank from” without permission. That should have been disclosed as part of the job. I understand that secrecy is their highest priority, but the delay in being honest felt both unrealistic and dangerous.

Once again, the author is very light on actual physical intimacy. You get one major scene, and the rest happens off-page, as if the reader is left at intermission.

These characters also give up too easily and give in too quickly. It’s a shame, because the story centers on a 23-year-old who stumbles into finding “the one” yet remains conflicted about religion, souls, damnation, and prejudice against vampires. Those issues really needed to be resolved before they could convincingly come back together as a couple.

I wanted to give this at least four stars, but I couldn’t—because, like the first book in the series, it read more like young adult fiction.

I really liked the author's previous book "The Accidental Bite" and thus was quite excited when I saw that there's a new book in that world. Sadly this book was utterly disappointing. The leads have no chemistry, besides lusting after each other. The plot hinges mostly on stupid as hell miscommunications. Among others; Lucina thinks Cass is homophobic because she wears a cross necklace. And then there are the icky consent issues, that are never properly discussed or dealt with and would've made for a much more compelling narrative, if they would've been.

Mainly (spoilers ahead):

1) Lucina hypnotizes Cass weekly for months to drink her blood.
2) While hypnotized Cass kisses Lucina once and cuddles with her. Lucina kisses her back and doesn't stop the intimacy at all.
3) Their first kiss outside of hypnosis is with Lucina being drunk and overpowering Cass.
4) The first time Lucina drinks Cass' blood outside of hypnosis is entirely non consensual.

In the end Lucina is really sorry about assaulting Cass so much and promises to not do it again. And I am mainly annoyed by how poorly the book handled these issues. This book tries to be relatively light hearted with its office romance, which makes the inclusion of non-con and dub-con elements quite jarring and increases the ick factor tenfold. All of the conversations about these issues are crammed into the last fifth of the book and have to contend with a sudden inexplicable religious crisis and love confessions and with that remain superficial and don't move past "I'm sorry." and "I accept.".

In the end I was rooting more for Cass to sue Lucina or for her to enter a throuple with the previous protagonist, than the actual relationship.

Cass came out to her mother as being lesbian. Her mom, being a very religious woman, didn't want to accept it. Cass also had to kind of walk back her claim to be able to not be disowned before going to and finishing college. But once she was done with all that, she moved away from home. But lucky for her, she found a great job, with loads of benefits for her, but only because she was a blood match.

Lucina Graves is new to the Markov company, and all her assistants are somewhat a match to her, that is until Cass comes along.

Cass, being young and straight out of college, doesn't have all the skills yet, and basically the work she was hired for wasn't what she studied so hard for. But can they make it work between them. Being blood matched comes with some advantages but also disadvantages. Especially seeing that Cass crushed on her boss, thinking it is taboo, and Lucina took issue with the cross around Cass neck. Crosses and vampires don't mix. Both also worried that neither was into women. How wrong they were…

This wasn't an easy one to rate. I like the setting, and it was really nice to see Lilianna and Dara from the first book again (especially since it's post the events of the bonus epilogue), and it's a decent read. But there is one major point that hamper it's enjoyment. Yes, there is non-consensual blood drinking, but to be fair, that is common across many vampire books (there are only limited ways to drink from a human without them knowing about vampires). Rather, it is the miscommunication that is present for and the foundation of much of the story, and at times it gets painful. This also means that the ending feels a bit rushed as well. Yes, there is a bonus newsletter epilogue, again, but that would have been nice being included in the story itself.

This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone but it’s nicer to read about Dara and Lilly first as there features quite a lot in this one.

Cass is a new assistant to Lucina, and also a 99% blood match. Having escaped her religious family so she can be an out and proud lesbian, she’s still finding her new way in a very different world.

She still wears a chain with a cross on which isn’t the done thing in the company of vampires even when totally ignorant that they are indeed real. I love these vampire books, always such a massive age gap alongside the naivety of their existence. Grumpy / sunshine also features too.

I loved this book. Lucina was such a sexy vampire and Cass was like a girl next door. You knew when they met it would take a minute, but they would find their way to one another. I felt a lot for Cass, so unsure of herself and with the strenght of her friends, she founf herself. And Lucina, being undetanding and waiting for her. Not in my opinion as good as the first book the MC's were not as engaging and both were quite timid and wet. I dnf'd at 70%.
