On a mysterious island, at an opulent estate, four ill women from the New Essik Sanatorium fight for their only chance to live—get one of the Roan siblings to fall in love with them. But Pippa won’t play their games. She knows love is a lie. All she wants is to provide a better future for her son.
She’ll do anything for her boy, even pretend to be in love with Shemaiah Roan when he asks her to dissuade the other women’s unwanted pursuit. It may start out as a fake arrangement, but when they have to venture beyond Roan Island to find Pippa’s son, their attraction becomes a genuine temptation they can’t deny.
Their search leads them back to The New Essik Sanatorium, where they discover nefarious forces at work. Forces who want Pippa and her boy and will do anything to keep them.
The Temptation of Roan Island is book two in The Roan Island Series, but can be read as a standalone. It’s a gothic steampunk fantasy about hope and desire, and is intended for an 18+ audience.

Let me start by saying 2 things: 1. I thoroughly enjoyed Secrets of Roan Island and was looking forward to this book and 2. I was shocked to be sent an advanced copy simply because I had signed up for one of the author’s newsletters (Maci Aurora).
Now to the book itself: like its predecessor I throughly enjoyed this story! While this is a separate love story to understand everything more fully I feel it necessary to read Secrets of Roan Island first. The characters focused on, Shemaiah and Pippa, were engaging and interesting. They had both been burned and did not trust in love. Their fates were sealed the moment they met and their journey to realizing it was fascinating. The story was filled will layers of mystery that kept me wanting to know what the deal was with everything. There were a few things that were on my radar that, while I did not figure out what was going on, I knew things were off and other things I did not even guess a little bit.
I do wish the end part had been just a little longer, but that is simply a minor thing overall and simply because I got so invested in the characters, old and new. I cannot wait for the next book as expanding the world has only made me enjoy it all more. I have a feeling a re-read of books 1 and 2 will be in order before the next book even.
I adored this story. I received an eARC for this through BookSirens, so thank you to the authors and them for the opportunity. It had all my favorite things: one bed, touch her and die, “my wife”, and still had a great plot line. The only thing I will warn is you MUST read book 1 of this. I had not read the previous book and found so many references off page that I struggled to understand the history surrounding these siblings and their father.
This was a great sequel after I fell in love with book 1!
With new spooky plots and untrustworthy allies, Shemaiah and Pippa have quite the story to weave through! Shemaiah is absolutely "the cinnamon roll that will kill you" and will always protect his friends and family. Pippa though quiet and reserved, is a concerned mother with time running out on her life and her happiness.
These two fit together so well and the friendship they found in each other along the way was wonderful. The spice and sincere changes in their relationship throughout the book felt very natural and I love how it worked out. There is so much mystery and intrigue in this book and although some twists can be predicted, some you won't see coming!
I LOVED The Secrets of Roan Island so when this ARC hit my kindle, I was pumped. I had such a fun time reading about Shemaiah and Pippa. Their romance was PERFECTION! I absolutely loved the gothic vibes and the plot had me guessing but when the big reveal happened, I was SHOOK. Shem and Pippa are a stunning match. I loved the two of them together and seeing their friendship turn into more. And one Shem was all in? He was ALLLLLLL IN 🥵 these two were HOT.
Highly recommend this series, start with The Secrets of Roan Island and then read Temptation!
guys. this was so unbelievably perfect. when I saw the ARC in my inbox, I about screamed. when Pippa Willoughby was diagnosed with Vastatio, a disease that has been targeting and killing women in New Essik, her whole life slowed around her. She had just had her son, Tobias, and he was her only happiness and hope, but when he was taken away, she lost it all. That's until the Roan brothers, Shemaiah and Jafeth, arrive at the sanitorium and offer pippa and three other women hope for a future. you see, the Roans are Mavarri and old race that, among other things, have fangs that deliver a venom with the potential to transform a human on summer solstice so long as there is love present. But both shemaiah and jafeth know they won't be falling in love with these women. Shemaiah especially has sworn off love no matter what, even if this human Pippa is so alluring. As new issues arise and evil forces are at play, can pippa and her son be saved or will all hope be fully lost. yall, this was phenomenal. when I read the first book of this series, I instantly knew I would love shemaiahs book when we got it. he is just such a sweetie. like truly a green flag with his love of reading and calm caring demeanor. plus, he takes accountability? fuck yes. and when he met pippa that just got even better. he calls her little flower. like yes. he is truly a proper man good lord. I was SWOONING. he's the definition of if a man could, he would. these Roan men and Zarah are just so iconic. you can feel their energy through the page like id listen to them no matter what. I loved it. I also love pippa. my fucking queen. she was so strong and was able to be vulnerable and caring without showing weakness. she is the definition of a badass. I was just so happy for her because she deserves the whole world. speaking of the whole world, the one that maci Aurora and thea mason has built is so perfect. like truly. the vibes are immaculate. it is the perfect fall or winter book. and the idea of Mavarri?! ugh. so perfect. these women are truly geniuses. and good lord. the spice!?! guys SOS COCK WARMING. thats all I ever needed. pippa is absolutely ravenous and honestly shemaiah is too. istg i dont think I'll ever be breathe properly again. ugh this was just everything Ive ever needed. for side notes, jafeth and his exceptional cock are so mfing annoying and I cannot wait for him to be tamed in the next book🤭 zarah and a certain someone are so precious. zarah deserves the absolute world. id also like to say i called that bs with the conflict and id like to say a big fuck you to all of the people involved. and I seriously need the rest of this series ASAP. this was everything Ive ever needed. like this couldn't get any better.
Small Business BookTok ARC Reviews (BookTome Edition): “The Temptation of Roan Island” by Maci Aurora and Thea Mason
Note: This ARC was given to me for free by the author, and I am reviewing this book voluntarily.
A single mom with a chronic illness in search of the son she was separated from years ago.. A vampiric lord in need of a fake wife to hold suitors at bay..One mysterious island.. Many secrets yet to be revealed..A deal that will bring temptations to the surface!
Get your vampiric fans at the ready and sink your teeth into the second installment in the “Roan Island” series by “Paper of Passions” author Thea Mason and “In the Shadows of a Wish” author Maci Aurora! The overall world-building, with its Victorian backdrop and romantic tension, not only feels reminiscent of “Bridgerton”, but the Gothic atmosphere and elements of plot and Vampire lore feels reminiscent of Gothic Horror films such as “Crimson Peak” and “Dracula”! You will connect with Pippa, the resilient, no-nonsense heroine of the narrative, as she does all that she can to protect her son while also facing ableist views at every turn in Regency society and finding a safe space in the Roan Family along the way. While some elements of how the Chronic Disability representation was handled in the narrative could have been further translated, the social/historical commentary and representation overall was informative and seemed to be handled with intention of care and respect in mind. Do you seek to travel to the Island of the Roan Family? Then don’t miss out on this book when it hits online shelves on October 24, 2025!
Title: The Temptation of Roan Island (Roan Island #2) Authors: Maci Aurora, Thea Masen Genre: Dark Romantasy Age Category: Adult Publication Date: Oct 24, 2025
Four terminally ill women from New Essik Sanatorium have one chance to live - getting on the Roan siblings to fall in love with them. Pippa though has no interest in playing their games. All she wants is to provide her son with a better future, a safe one. When Shemaiah Roan asks her to pretend to be in love with her to dissuade the other women's unwanted attention, she agrees but they find themselves searching far and wide for Pippa's son all while their undeniable attraction grows. Their search brings them back to The Sanatorium where they find nefarious forces at work, ones who want Pippa and her son and will do anything to keep them in their grasp.
I wasn't sure what to expect for the sequel after the fantastic ending to The Secrets of Roan Island but a faking dating paranormal romance was not it. I enjoyed this story immensely. There is something about a man refusing to acknowledge and act on his feelings that makes me giggle and kick my feet. The pacing of the story was just right for the plot, although I did wish for a few less time jumps. I understand the rationale, I wanted a bit more time exploring life on Roan Island for Pippa and the other women.
The yearning and slow burn in this fake dating situation was chef's kiss, especially for a shorter novel (325 pages may not be short for some, but it is for me). Mix that with the gothic setting and it is perfect for fall time. The ending was the best possible way to wrap up the story for not only Pippa and Shemaiah but also for the other women from the Sanatorium. I really hope we get books for the other two siblings, both Jafeth and Zarah.
The Roan Island Series is a great set of gothic books with spectacular slow burns and more yearning than a girl knows what to do with. These are perfect for fall time and I highly recommend it for anyone who needs a little spooky romance in their reading lives.
Thanks so much to Thea Masen for the eARC! I adored this gothic romance with elements of horror set in a different world that is strikingly similar to a late 19th century version of our own.
Pippa is dying. She’s living out her last days in The Sanitorium, slowly fading from a mysterious wasting disease and the only bright spot in her life are weekly visits from her toddler son. All the women in the Sanitorium are afflicted with this disease and they’re all destined to die. That all changes when Shemaiah and Jareth Roan visit from their private island with a proposal - come to their island, live in luxury at our home, and let us try to cure you. Pippa is only too happy to agree, as long as her son can come too. She doesn’t believe they’ll succeed, but she wants to spend as much time with Toby as she can before she passes.
But the brothers are hiding secrets. They don’t only want to try and cure the women - they also want to feed on their blood and possibly fall in love. The Roan family is the last of their kind and they’re trying to survive as a species.
The island hosts delightfully spicy New Moon parties - orgies of blood, voyeurism and exhibitionism. The Roan family (including head of family Noah, his wife Ruby and sister Zarah) are welcoming, but there’s also a creepy housekeeper with questionable motives. Worst of all, Toby can’t be found anywhere.
As Pippa and Maiah’s feelings for each other grow, they leave the island to search for Toby and unravel so many mysteries (and corset laces) along the way. What’s truly causing these women to sicken? Where has Toby been all this time?
Human experimentation Religious cults Public spice Blood letting Second in a series, but can be read as a standalone
This my favorite read of September. Add it to your fall TBR!
➕ - I devoured this in 24 hours. It is the perfect blend of mystery and romance set in a gothic manor. - I adoooreee Pippa and Shemaiah. They both have been betrayed in the worst way before that neither believes in love. But they grow close, developing a friendship and with it, trust. - The slow burn was beautifully done. I love the angst, tension and pining. Then "WHERE IS MY WIFE?!" came around, and I just died and went to trope heaven. - I thought the mystery arc was 🤌🏻. The breadcrumbs were all there but I did not see the twists and reveals coming. - This series has lots of strong female characters! Pippa is a fierce and resilient single mother. She's loyal and loving. - Such a sweet and satisfying ending. I was not ready to say goodbye to Pippa, Shemaiah and Toby.
➖ - I do think this can be read as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading the first book. (It's only 300 pages and you have until Oct 24!) - I expected to see more of Toby when I pictured a single parent trope, but that's just my bias because I love cute kids 😂.
Thank you to the authors for sending me an eARC. All opinions are my own.
Seriously I didn't think that I could love another Roan brother more than Noah, but let me tell you what Shemaiah... lawd have mercy...let me tell you what... I would defiantly be on that boat to Roan Island if that bad boy really existed.
So first off let me start by saying that they way these to authors manage to intricately entwine these characters...it's impressive. Not only did we get more of our beloved first couple but we get an even deeper insight to this Roan family and its unfortunate past.
Then you insert this new FMC, and when I tell you that my heart immediately was breaking for her. She has been through some pretty devistating life events.... and through it all selflessly pushes through... there is one main focus for her and once you realize what it is your heart will break too.
The MMC, oh he's the prime example of tall, dark, and mysterious. But he also has had a similar experience where he's let his guard down and love has shattered it. Yet theres just something about our FMC that has him looking at things a little differently.
The push and pull. The banter. The tension. The SPICE!
That first "my wife" and I swear I almost turned into a puddle.
On Roan Island four ladies from the New Essik Sanatorium are looking for a way to save their lives. And that is to make one of the Roan siblings fall in love with them. But Pippa isn’t interested in that, she just wants to spend what little time she has left with her son. She enlists Shemaiah Roan to help her. In return he asks her to pretend they are courting to dissuade the other women from pursuing him. When the search for her boy turns up nothing, Shemaiah and Pippa head back into New Essik in a search that will end up uncovering a conspiracy with her and her boy at the center.
I found Shem and Pippa to be super adorable. I love that their relationship started with friendship developing into them refusing to admit feeling for each other. I also really liked the side story with Zarah and (spoilers), they were just as cute. This story definitely has less tension than the first book and it was able to focus more on the relationships. Although, that being said, the last few chapters were a rollercoaster and fast paced. I enjoyed it a lot and cannot wait for Jafeth and (??) story. And the cliffhanger mystery already has me running a bunch of ideas through my head. Cant wait.
Rating 4 stars *I received a review copy from the author for my voluntary and honest review
Another superb book by this duo. I love this series. I am not particularly a romantasy fan. This book has enough fantasy and otherworldly-ness to account for the characters and settings, but it also feels like an historical romance in modern times. It's hard to explain the whole vibe, but it's so easy to fall into.
This entry in the series revolves around Shemiah. Now that we've learned the method of conversion to Mavarri, the Roans know that their race can live on, if only the reluctant brothers agree. Remember that there are 3 woman from the sanatorium still at Roan Island? Well, they've all set sights on Shemiah, since Jafeth is still a player of the highest order. Shemiah, however, does not believe in love, so he chooses to become friends with Pippa, whose only goal is to find her son before she dies.
Now, there is something hinky going on throughout the whole book, and while I guessed some of it, I was delighted not to have guessed everything. There were a couple of fun surprises. There is some spice, of course, but it really takes a backseat to the plot.
I flew through this book. It was creative and fun. I really want Zarah to have a full book (Hint.Hint.) even though she has an underlying storyline here. I can't wait for Jafeth's downfall !!
Been waiting for the second installment and Shemaiah's story and it was as amazing as I'd hoped! Qoth a lovely Gothic romance feel, we get our sweet, kindly, softer spoken brother of the Roan family.
The family aren't exactly vampires but carry some unique riffs of the familiar fang owners. Pippa is sick and dying and comes to Roan Island along with some friends in hopes for a cure. But their purpose is two fold and it's such a unique one.
Shemaiah has voted never to fall in love again, and I feel for this somewhat broken man, but not overly angsty. This is only light on the angst but really rich on the push- pull between him and Pippa.
She's frail but not weak of countenance. Her falling for Maiah was restrained enough to feel real and I felt their connection strongly and realistically. I also loved how his condition is described, how he sometimes tries to hold back to protect her from his "monster".
Very well paced (though the big spicy scene was pretty lengthy lol), with bits of mystery that keeps it moving. An easy read with the perfect amount of gothic paranormal, but still very grounded in reality. Loved Noah and now I love Shem!
4/5-The Temptation of Roan Island, Thea Masen & Maci Aurora
Like a bit of 19th Century Gothic Horror? This books for you.
This book could easily be the story of other Vampire books gone before, an island, with a gothic mansion, the home of a family of vampires. A sanitorium housing unwell women with a life threatening disease, who go to live out the rest of their days at the mansion, enjoy its new moon parties and relish in the possibility of love that leads to vampire immortality.
One particular woman, Pippa befriends one of the vampire brothers, Shemaiah and he helps her on the quest of finding her son. The close proximity builds a sexual tension like none other, but will they find her son and connect, or will the disease end her journey before they can? Or will someone(s) ruin it all?
I found this book, well written and easy to follow. The storyline and characterisation are well rounded, wrapped up in this heady sexual undertone and sometimes, clear overtone. I thought the world building relied a little too heavily on what is known from other vampire stories, however I then discovered this is book 2 in a series which would explain my thoughts, so off I go to download The Secrets of Roan Island.
Read the triggers, however they are relevant and expected in a Gothic Horror novel about vampires.
The Temptation Of Roan Island was the read I didn’t know I needed. In this book I found all the things I loved in book 1 of the Roan Island series: the dark/ ghotic setting, the supernatural elements, the mystery, the passion, and all the lust. What I didn’t expect was the sweet and excruciating slow burn between Pippa and Shemaiah. And, well, I looooved the pining, the tension, the wanting, and the desire between these two MCs who clearly are perfect for each other! The way I started to root for them so hard from the prologue... is insane! The pent-up tension between them gave me life. And, when the spice finally hit, it was soooo good. This book turned me back into a teenager with a big crush on vampires and who loved nothing more than watching them become more human because of love. And I needed it. Thank you Maci Aurora and Thea Masen for giving me all these feels!
Who would've thought I would love another Roan brother more than Noah? Not I but I think Shemiah did it. And Pippa is such a strong woman.
These two fighting their attractions for each other was everything! The angst was so high and I loved every minute of it. When they finally came together, it was fireworks. I I swear him calling her wife got not just them, it got me too.
The mystery that continues to develop in this series is the perfect balance. Its allows the readers to try to predict while allowing for surprises. And I will say one thing. I KNEW IT! I can't say what because that'll ruin it but come ask me once you've read it.
I want more of little Tobias! The next book is centered on Jareth and the new developments. But, I'm hoping more Tobias comes into it as well.
Hoping I don't have to wait too long because this series is becoming a favorite of 2025.
A great second book in the series! I highly recommend that you read book 1 Secrets of Roan Island before reading this book.
Temptation follows the events of book 1 . Shemaiah Roan is adamant that he cannot fall in love - he won’t! In walks Pippa !
Gothic Glasslamp alternate world “Vampires” Sexy new moon Parties Bites Fake Relationship Let me carry you Hurt/ comfort My Wife!!
I really enjoyed this book! It was a quicker read than book one as the world building has already been laid out. The slow burn between Shem and Pippa was so yummy. It was very cute to see them bond over puzzles and books. When I spice finally hit omg it hit really spicy ( for like 1 chapter).
Did I think this book could top The Secrets of Roan Island? Of course not. But did it? It absolutely did! This is such a good read and I highly recommend it, but start with Secrets if you haven't read it yet. I enjoyed having the characters I loved so much in that 1st book show up in here, and not just in passing. This book also has some spookiness, just in time for October and all it's spooky vibes. I really didn't think anybody could top Noah, but thank you for proving that Shemaiah could, even if he was trying to hold back. I also loved having a FMC that was absolutely not there for love (unlike some women were), but found it anyway. 💕😁
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Shemaiah; a Mavarri is immediately drawn to Pippa. He knows love is terrible and he is not good enough for her so he refuses his attraction. But the heart wants what the heart wants. And he cannot seem to leave her alone. And then a fake dating situation arises to help cover for their investigation. But nothing is as fake as it seems is it?
Something strange has been happening on the island will they figure it out before it’s too late?
I did not realize just how much I was craving revisiting Roan Island until I started reading this book. The first book was really good but this book, edged it out. As soon as I started reading, it was like a movie playing in my head. I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS BOOK!!
Shemaiah is a tortured soul. I really felt for him. He came off broodish, which I actually found very alluring and attracted me to him. Pippa is so quiet. She is like a church mouse. Yet, the way that Shemaiah is drawn to Pippa is endearing. I have just one word...Lemongrass. You will just have to read this book to understand what I mean by this.
The story picks up steam in the last third of the story. I was locked in. Thea and Maci pens a gorgeous, gothic, love story with this book.
Pippas growing friendship with Shemaiah and the soft lingering slow burn between them is written with such care and emotion. Their connection feels fragile yet inevitable like something pulled together by fate itself. The world of Roan Island continues to expand pulling me deeper into its gothic mystery. The Sanatorium which piqued my curiosity in the first book returns with even more secrets and eerie allure.
Friends to lovers. Fake dating. Slow burn. This one had me completely lost in its pages.
I’m beyond thrilled that this series isn’t over and I can’t wait to dive into Lucy and Jafeth’s story next. If you love indie authors who pour their souls into dark immersive worlds that deserve so much more attention this series is for you.
I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I'm not a fan of gothic vampire like stories in general and when I got it I said why not since I needed spooky reads for October. Well, these authors blew the story out of the water. Yes, it's spicy and there's world building, and I know that I missed some things because I didn't read the first book, but the plot that makes this unique and human is the disabling illness and how it's portrayed. If you are into uniquely told paranormal stories with morally grey characters, this book is for you.
4.5 ⭐️ *Spoilers for Book 1: The Secrets of Roan Island* Mavarri blood can only transform a human into a vampire if there is love. Could it be possible for another Roan brother to open his heart?
I returned to Roan Island and this journey took me by surprise. The beginning led me to believe it would be a sweet story, since Shemaiah is a polite guy. But in a vampire story, we can expect anything.
The plot twist left me 😳😲🤯.
Love, sacrifice, secrets, hope.
Highly recommended.
I can only say that I am very excited and looking forward to Jafeth's story.
I've been waiting for this story since finishing the first book and it was well worth the wait! I loved getting to immerse myself in this world again. This story focuses on Shemaiah, brother of Noah from Book 1, and Pippa, one of the women from New Essik Sanatorium. Pippa and Shemaiah's relationship develops, at first, as a friendship that leads to so much more. I enjoyed how all their pining and tension led to some incredible spice. The mystery thread of this story kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved every twist. So many secrets and swooning to be had!
I can't wait for Jareth's story and more from this author duo!
This book!!! Ahhhhh!!!! I loved The Secrets of Roan Island and wasn’t sure how the sequel would live up to it, but omg did it 😍 Shemaiah isn’t my usual type, but consider me SOLD on this MMC 🥵 He’s the perfect balance of sensitive and intense. Brooding and emotionally intelligent. Gentlemanly and monstrous. I was so into the book my husband had to ask me to “stop screaming while I’m sleeping next to you please it’s terrifying”. Thank you to Thea and Maci for this ARC copy, I thoroughly enjoyed it as an October monster read 💚
I'll always read anything Thea Masen writes but this series is a must read! I was obsessed with book one, and was patiently waiting for this book and it didn't disappoint! Shemaiah and Pippa was beautiful together, Pippa being sick but wanting a chance to be with her son and Shemaiah helping her anyway he can. I devoured this book, it was the perfect autumn Spooky vibes book! You definitely need to read this series!
Beginning the story of Pippa I was expecting trouble from the time Shemaiah came into picture. Sickness, single motherhood and the "monsters" were no match for the connection they fought almost to the end. The slow burn was amplified by the illness weakinging the FMC and had me questioning where this would lead. So thankful for the opportunity to leave a voluntary review after receiving an advance review copy for free.
The Temptation of Roan Island by Thea Masen and Maci Aurora is the second in the Roan Island Series. I hadn't read the first book, but I went and read it before starting this one. I highly recommend reading the first book so you can get the full story. Loved it. Loved the magic, island, and of course vampires. Looking forward to the next one.
