Legend of Mist and Blade: A King Arthur-inspired Portal Romantic Fantasy

Rate this book
In her mid-thirties, Gwen McMillan has it all. She enjoys being a cop, has a partner she trusts with her life, and gets to enjoy her downtime at the end of each shift in her cozy farmhouse. The best part is, she’s far from her parents’ control and the sheltered life of privilege they lead.

Despite the distance between her and her family, she’s honor-bound to keep their centuries-old secret hidden – protecting the fabled sword Excalibur until, as the legends foretold, King Arthur returns. Since becoming the blade’s guardian, Gwen’s had countless dreams about terrifying monsters, ancient kings, and mist-filled forests. And lately, these dreams center around an enigmatic, charming man she inexplicably feels drawn to.

But when Gwen and Excalibur are magically swept away to Avalon, she lands in the middle of a war between humans and monsters. Mordred, the tyrannical ruler of the fae, is determined to conquer Avalon and rule over Arthur’s castle, where a gateway to the human realm is hidden. Gwen joins the battle to save Camelot and protect the secret portal while trying to discover why she feels such a strong connection to Avalon’s magic.

That is, until Orin, one of Arthur’s knights, begins to pull at her heartstrings and her longstanding desire for a storybook kind of love. He’s handsome, he’s broody, and he feels eerily familiar to Gwen. Their magnetic attraction to one another is undeniable. Despite the ongoing war and Orin’s deep-seated fear of losing anyone else he loves, their romance blossoms.
Gwen and Orin fight alongside Arthur, his knights, and fae rebels to defend the realm against Mordred’s invasion. All hope for Camelot seems lost when the dark tyrant’s army draws closer to the castle gates. As Avalon’s champion, Gwen knows she holds the key to their salvation. But convincing Arthur to hand over Excalibur so she can use the blade to connect with Avalon’s magic – the only way to defeat Mordred and his army – proves difficult.

If Gwen can’t convince Arthur to hand over his fabled sword, she won’t be able to fulfill her destiny to protect Avalon. And if she can’t, Mordred will storm Camelot then conquer the entire mortal realm. Every human in Avalon will be slaughtered, and not only will Gwen and Orin’s love be lost to time and history, so will the legacy of King Arthur.

Tropes include: older characters, slow burn yearning, fade to black intimacy, widower, magic systems, Arthurian retelling, found family, grumpy x sunshine, portal fantasy, and reluctant chosen one.

I Wasn't Just Reading, I Was Gwen’s Squire✨🗡️

Forget reality! This book didn't just tell a story, it enchanted me straight into it. I wasn't a mere reader; I was the MFC's squire, side by side with her unfazed, down-to-earth self and her absolutely sassy, loyal dog, Saxon (my new favorite character). The Arthurian portal magic is fresh, the battle scenes are flawlessly executed, and the romance is chef's kiss. My only wish? A deeper dive into the villain Mordred’s dark heart. Otherwise? Pure, hypnotizing perfection. Fellow romantasy fans, drop everything and let this book claim you. ⚔️💖🐾

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5-Star Read: Legend of Mist and Blade by A.M. Ross
If you’re craving beautifully written storytelling, immersive world-building that grabs you from page one, and characters who feel real, this indie gem belongs on your TBR. The emotional depth, lush descriptions, characters who are flawed (in the best, most relatable way), and perfectly paced plot make this an unforgettable fantasy adventure that was difficult to put down. A.M. Ross weaves a story that’s rich in atmosphere and heart-and gives us a lovable canine sidekick! I can't wait to see what comes next!

Overview
Legend of Mist and Blade by A.M. Ross takes a unique approach to Arthurian lore by dropping modern-day police officers Gwen and Lancelot into the mystical realm of Avalon. While marketed as a standalone within a series, the story carries over enough prior context that readers unfamiliar with the first book may find themselves initially disoriented.

The Pros
Stunning Artwork: The visual presentation stands out as a major highlight, adding an extra layer of immersion to the reading experience.

Promising Concept: The blend of modern procedural elements (police backgrounds) with classic mythos gives the series immense potential. This didn't feel modern to me, apart from the odd pop culture references from the two protagonists which felt a bit out of place in this setting if you didn't know the first book.

Strong Debut: Despite a few structural stumbles, the book serves as an impressive debut for A.M. Ross.

Optimism for the Future: Fans of the universe will likely find plenty to look forward to, particularly with hints pointing toward a potential third instalment focused on Merlin.

Areas for Improvement
World-Building & Lore Consistency: Being well-versed in Celtic mythology, the mixing of lore from different cultural traditions felt disjointed. For instance, pairing a Scottish kelpie with House of Dwyn (Dwyn coming from Welsh for water) reads reads similarly to throwing African American, Native American, and broader American cultural elements all together into one unstructured mix. It felt like A.M Ross was throwing different cultures in there to try and make it work. Deeper mythological research would elevate the world-building significantly.

Pacing and Action: Critical narrative moments—including the death of Mordred, the defeat of the Questing Beast, and the torture sequences—felt rushed and occasionally flat.

Exposition Heavy Dialogue: Certain chapters drag due to lengthy dialogue scenes deployed primarily to dump exposition and explain plot mechanics to the reader.

Abrupt Endings & Time Jumps: The conclusion moves too fast, skipping over vital character beats like Gwen's trauma recovery, learning to control both powers (her visions were conveniently left out in this one) and her and Lancelot's courting phase in favour of an 18-month time jump straight to the wedding. I personally would have liked to see that progress with the wedding being more earned.

Content Mismatch: Despite being billed as a "closed-door" romance, some of the make-out scenes feature intimately descriptive language that pushes past traditional closed-door boundaries.

Ultimately, Legend of Mist and Blade boasts a fascinating premise, rich potential, and striking artwork that make it an enjoyable read for fans of romantic fantasy and Arthurian retellings. While tighter mythological research, more balanced pacing, and smoother character arcs would have elevated the experience, it remains a strong and engaging debut for A.M. Ross. Earning a solid 3 out of 5 stars, it paves an exciting path for the series moving forward.

Legend of Mist and Blade by A.M. Ross is an engaging portal fantasy that blends Arthurian legend with romance, action, and a strong sense of destiny.

At the center of the story is Gwen McMillan, a capable and grounded protagonist whose life takes a dramatic turn when she is transported from her familiar world into the magical realm of Avalon. Her role as the guardian of Excalibur adds immediate weight to her character, placing her at the intersection of duty, legacy, and personal identity.

What makes the narrative particularly compelling is how it balances modern sensibilities with classic mythological elements. Gwen’s background as a cop gives her a practical and resilient perspective, which contrasts effectively with the mystical and often unpredictable nature of Avalon. This duality strengthens her character and makes her journey feel both relatable and epic in scale.

The romantic dynamic between Gwen and Orin adds emotional depth to the story. Their connection develops gradually, allowing the relationship to feel authentic and earned. The slow burn approach enhances the tension, especially as it unfolds against the backdrop of war and uncertainty. Orin’s guarded nature and Gwen’s strength create a dynamic that is both tender and compelling.

The worldbuilding is another strong aspect of the novel. Avalon is portrayed as a realm filled with history, conflict, and magic, where the stakes feel real and immediate. The ongoing battle against Mordred introduces a sense of urgency that drives the narrative forward, while also reinforcing the larger theme of protecting both worlds.

Gwen’s internal conflict—balancing her responsibility as Excalibur’s guardian with her evolving role in Avalon—adds a meaningful layer to the story. Her struggle to step fully into her destiny highlights themes of trust, courage, and self-discovery.

What ultimately gives Legend of Mist and Blade its strength is its ability to merge romance, fantasy, and legend into a cohesive and emotionally resonant narrative. It is a story about stepping into power, embracing change, and fighting for both love and legacy.

At 353 pages, the novel offers an immersive and character driven experience that will resonate with readers who enjoy Arthurian retellings, slow burn romance, and richly layered fantasy worlds.

This was a decent read with a good mix of magic and forgotten worlds.

Gwen comes from a long line of women who have been tasked with guarding the scared sword Excalibur, until one day Avalon (a realm in a parallel world) calls her to it to return the blade to the legendary King Arthur. Arthur is king of a stronghold against the fae: an outpost of humans barely surviving against the evil Fae prince Mordred who has taken over the realms and the (supposedly evil) Fae. Gwen has already fallen for love-interest Orin through her dreams, and ends up being pivitol in the war against Mordred as she fights to gain the trust of Arthur and his men.

This was a decent read though at times I felt that MC Gwen was a little too blasé about her life turning upside down and all the craziness that went along with it. She was kind of too perfect; trained in weaponry, fluent in languages, just so happened to have a poor relationship with both parents and no friends so no one would miss her on Earth, excellent with kids, drop-dead gorgeous… the usual. Her and Orin’s relationship could have had a bit more chemistry and I found Logan/Lancelot’s character a little confused at times—best friend turned spurned love-interest.

I don’t know what it is about modern fiction that seems to think love of coffee is a personality trait, but the first few pages of this novel read like an advert for “that beany goodness”.

The stakes are well established though I’d have liked a bit more world-building for the Fae. I’ll be reading the next book in this series and expect we’ll have more of that then.

3 stars!

Legend of Mist and Blade: Arthurian-Inspired Portal Romantasy by AM Ross

One of my favourite things about this book is that the main characters are older adults who have actually lived full lives already. They’ve had careers, romantic histories, and baggage by the time they find themselves exploring magic, adventure, and romance together. And honestly, I loved that. Give me more romantasy with older main characters (like me)!

Besides, you gotta love an FMC (Gwen) who starts the book by saving the Knights of the Round Table—including Odin, her dream man and lifelong crush—from Fae attackers.

Gwen, a small-town police officer, and her canine unit partner, Saxon, are thrust into an Arthurian world where she must fulfill her family’s centuries-old legacy. She’s the reluctant chosen one, and now she has to figure out her mystical powers while helping save Avalon from Mordred, the tyrannical ruler of the Fae.

I really liked Gwen as a heroine. She’s capable, straightforward, and very much a “well, apparently I have to save the magical world now” kind of woman.

Her relationship with Orin develops gradually, with plenty of yearning and emotional tension rather than insta love. Gwen’s take-charge personality plays really well against Orin’s more broody and guarded nature, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

I also listened to the audiobook which deserves a shout-out! Kate Clover and Jarman Day did a phenomenal job. Kate really brought Gwen’s personality and strength to life, while Jarman absolutely nailed Orin’s broody, guarded vibe. Their narration added so much to the chemistry and emotional tension between the characters.

If you enjoy Arthurian-inspired romantasy, portal fantasy, older main characters, reluctant chosen ones, Fae, slow-burn romance, magical adventures, war and lots of yearning, definitely give this one a try!

A portal fantasy you don’t want to leave

I will always be down for a story inspired by mythology and A.M. Ross’ Legend of Mist and Blade did not disappoint. This story brings Arthurian legend to life in between the pages while introducing a unique spin on the characters and world. The cover is a perfect representation of the journey the reader will go on.

My favourite aspect of this story is the balance between worldbuilding details and organic character reactions within it. Above all, the reactions to the characters are genuine to the reader’s experience. I really felt as though I was going through the adventure with Gwen and Orin. These characters breathe life into the story, making the read all the more intriguing. I do wish I got to see more interactions with Mordred but Ross has established a strong foundation about the Mist lands. I am excited about Lancelot’s story and seeing this part of the world.

The reveals this book has, I was not expecting and I am here for it. I was laughing throughout the story. It is a slow burn but this one is worth it as Ross ties the plot together by the book’s end.

For readers looking for a reluctant chosen one, high-stakes action, worldbuilding lore, and fleshed out character development in a mythological setting, this story is for you.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This audiobook absolutely ate. If you're into Arthurian legends, portal fantasy, magic, slow-burn romance, and a badass FMC who actually feels like an adult, you need this in your life.

A.M. Ross created a world that pulled me in from the very first chapter. The mix of modern-day life with Avalon and King Arthur lore felt fresh, and the characters had so much heart. Gwen is fierce, funny, and easy to root for, while Orin had me completely invested. The action, emotion, and romance were balanced so well that I kept finding excuses to listen to "just one more chapter." I ended up finishing the book in one day. I just couldn't stop!

And the narrators? They absolutely crushed it. Kate Clover gave Gwen so much personality and emotion, while Jarman Day's performance for Orin was smooth, powerful, and completely swoon-worthy. Their voices complemented each other perfectly and made the story feel incredibly immersive. It honestly felt more like listening to a movie than an audiobook.

This was one of those audiobooks where I never wanted to hit pause. The story had me hooked, the performances were top-tier, and that ending left me desperate for the next book. Huge kudos to A.M. Ross and both narrators for delivering such an epic listening experience. Highly recommend!

This was such a good and refreshing read!

What I loved most about this one was that our MCs felt real! They were older, flawed, and totally relatable. Also, while the world building was immersive, it was also easy to follow. I really liked the modern twist that was added in. I am not familiar with the legend of King Arthur; however, I was able to follow this with no issues.

I love a good strong FMC and Gwen was definitely a total baddie! Having Saxon added in as her side kick was absolutely perfect (iykyk). I loved Gwen's journey into Avalon, the found family and relationships that she was building, and especially her relationship with Orin. He is broody and closed off, but the chemistry and attraction are there.

I felt like this entire book was perfectly paced, the writing flowed so well, and the characters were so relatable, and it made this such a great read.

If you're looking for a romantasy with older characters, magic, found family, a broody MMC, a baddie FMC, portal fantasy, the chosen one, and fade to black romance, then definitely check this one out! Can't wait to see where the story goes in the next book!

ALC Review for Legend of Mist and Blade Audiobook!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️

What a fantastic reimagining of Arthur and his knights of the Round Table! The story is powerful and engaging, with a dose of heartbreak along the way.
Kate and Jarman do a wonderful job of narrating this! Kate’s storytelling is mesmerising and both bring Gwen and Orin to life exactly how you’d imagine!
Gwen is passionate and tells you how it is, if she feels a decision isn’t right or if someone has annoyed her. She stands up for herself and shows she was more than capable to take care of not only herself but others as well!
Orin is used to the old ways as an old knight but is enamoured with Gwen as soon as she appears in his life, although he’s known heartache so isn’t someone to open up.
Saxon is adorable and I really loved how the author made sure that Gwen was still wary of children around Sax as a former police dog.
I’m extremely lucky I’ve been chosen to ARC the second book in the series because the ending left me screaming for more!
If you love Grumpy x Sunshine, Protective MMC and a FMC who’s badass and not afraid of saying what she thinks, then look no further!

A.M. Ross's debut novel was an incredible reimagining of the legends of King Arthur. Our FMC Gwen was a loveable, relatable character, and I particularly loved that she was not freshly 18, but had lived a bit of life and knew herself well. The story featured found family, paving your own way in life, a reluctant but capable "chosen one," and a loyal animal companion (Saxon was the best character by far!). The romantic subplot was a positive addition, and I felt it was balanced with the main storyline well.

Very small critiques I have would be that I did feel the pacing was off at the beginning and end, and there were a couple of small grammar/syntax issues, but nothing that pulled me out of the story. I would give this a 4.5/5 and rounding up to a 5 for how quickly I devoured the story.

From someone who loved Camelot as a child, this was such a fun way to return to those stories. I look forward to the second book!

Presqu’un livre 4 étoiles

Rafraîchissant d’avoir une héroïne qui est plus âgée et donc a de l’ambition, sait ce qu’elle veut et possède une bonne intelligence émotionnelle.

Même si elle est people pleaser à l’occasion, she speaks her mind and doesn’t sit on the sidelines.

This was such a wonderful romantic fantasy! The FMC Gwen was not your typical whiny twenty something. She was a take charge, late thirties, strong woman who dealt with all the insanity of being trapped in a fantasy world in a calm and rational manner.

The story was so well-written and a unique take on the King Arthur legend. Plus it's a standalone so if you want your fantasy fix without committing to a five book series then this is perfect!

Highly recommend for fans of fade to black romantasy!

Legend of Mist and Blade by A.M. Ross

I always love finding an Indie Gem 💎

A beautifully written indie fantasy that completely swept me away.

The world-building is lush and immersive, the characters are flawed in the most human way, and the emotional depth kept me hooked from the first page.

A.M. Ross balances action, heart, and atmosphere perfectly. Perfect if you are looking for a classic retelling with twists and turns.

I can’t wait to see where Lances story takes us.

This was a really cozy read - the kind of story you want to read while bundled up with a warm beverage. The characters were lovable and relatable, and the magic atmosphere was immersive and creative. There was a comfort in knowing that the story would end happily for the characters I came to know and love.

Can't wait to read Lancelots story!

A fantasy FMC with a career, dog, dreams, and hot flashes. Seriously. She’s lived. She’s seen things. She knows what she wants and likes.

I enjoyed this audiobook while in the duet style it was actually primarily narrated by Kate with Jarman doing the male voices only which I thought was unique.

Kate did really well with some of the female voices so much so I almost didn’t know it was her voice.

The story itself was an interesting take on King Arthur but more fae focused. If you love King Arthur retellings and portal fantasies I’d recommend this one. I have feelings about Orin but will keep those to myself until the next book 👀
