I took a chance on a new author, and I'm glad I did! Take the Wheel is GREAT. Vlad doesn't waste any time getting right to the good stuff, and doesn't pad the book with 100+ pages of "filler" like most nonfiction books. It's as long as it needs to be, without being any longer.

The parts that were more personally relevant to me were his discussions of the hidden costs of complexity, and the art of marketing yourself, but there's sooo much in here that I found useful and immediately applicable.

Take the Wheel has a solid mix of "personal growth" AND "professional growth," and I appreciated his nuanced take on the difference between influence and manipulation. It doesn't always seem popular, but "ethical influence" is eminently POSSIBLE, and that part of the book should be required reading for sure. I'm already a strong listener, but I also appreciated his advice on active listening too.

All in all, great book, and I'd read a follow-up book from him if he ever decides to write one!

I first read this book last year, and at the time, I found myself drawn to the sentences on internal resistance and the wait for someone to "recognize my potential." In January, I started a new project and leaned hard into Vlad’s advice on ownership, celebrating small wins, and obsessing over future performance improvements.

Re-reading the book this year, I’m struck by how much I’ve grown. The sentences I previously highlighted as "goals" now describe my daily reality. I’m no longer waiting for recognition; I’m focusing on impact, reach, and showing others the way.

Why you should read this:
- Vlad explains that struggling with complex work isn't laziness but a natural part of the process that requires self-compassion.
- This is a guide I plan to return to every year as I tackle new projects.

If you feel like you’re drifting or waiting for permission to be great, read this. Maybe it will also inspire you to Take the Wheel.
