Israel: A Personal History
Close, close beneath the land I had once rooted myself in and loved, lay a land filled with violence, injustice and hatred
On 22 April 1962 what remains of Göran Rosenberg’s family embark from his native Sweden to make Israel their new home. Transplanted into a nation born only a few months before him, he is first enchanted by its vitality, imprinted by its ideals. It marks the beginning of a lifetime’s journey across the promised land and into its past, a reckoning with the utopian visions and desperate fears that went into Zionism as well as the violence and dispossession of its realization. This landmark book tells the story of that journey – through buried stories and erased villages, dreams and disillusionments, and the histories still unfurling today.

Rosenberg's Personal History ping-pongs between first-hand accounts of living in a recently settled Israel and the brief histories of the nation’s inception, feuding political factions, and eventual rise as a geopolitical force.
I found reading about his journey, loss of national innocence, and overall feelings of betrayal and deception to be fascinating.
As a young American, I also learned a lot from his historical background on the innumerable conflicts that have plagued Israel, Palestine, and the neighboring countries.

This book brought me so much knowledge.. and it’s really refreshing to see the point of view from someone who had first hand experience in the early years of the development of Israel. As a young American, my information of these things can be limited and sometimes the information controlled by the media isn’t accurate to the truth of the matter. I learned a lot and I encourage anyone else who wants to educate themselves on the conflicts and people of occupied Palestine and Israel, to also pick this up and give it a read.

Conflicting thoughts—I did not *love* this book but I learned a lot. Goran Rosenberg’s book was presented as a “personal” history of Israel, which led me to believe the information presented would be more in the form of a personal memoir with history that aligned with the author’a lived experiences. This book ended up being maybe 20% personal history, and the rest, history. Which is not bad per se. However, the information at times was droning.
The author begins with his family’s personal story of “ascension” into a newly formed Israel after the Holocaust, of which his parents survived. He describes the euphoria and essentially, indoctrination he received as a student about what the state of Israel would be and was becoming. For example, various hikes were an integral part of the students’ experiences as they were being taught that the land was an almost inseparable part of who they were.
The next good chunk of the book goes far back into the history of the Jewish diaspora-the histories of various forms of antisemitism experienced in Europe even in the Middle Ages, all through present day, as well as the various iterations of Zionism that developed in response (essentially, a home for the Jewish people, but not always necessarily Israel).
After that, the history of the last century is the most engaging, probably because it has a smaller cast of political parties and significant people to follow.
Rosenberg expunges much of the hidden history of Palestinian treatment in Israel’s land appropriation throughout the decades post 1948 creation of Israel.
His personal story is a bit more weaved in as he shares his slow disillusionment with Zionism. However, for the most part, the book feels as though it remains at arms length from a personal history. He does include past friends and classmates from the short while he actually lived in Israel, but even those were more to illustrate how various political factions were created and what they represented to the ongoing state of Israel. He spends a lot of time explaining how the politics of the origins of what Israel was hoped to be had evolved over time as the Likud party gained a stronger foothold. I’m overly simplifying this, he spends MUCH time talking about the histories of both parties, and many in between, and how they came to be what they are today.
I’m writing most of this for my own memory so it’s not much of a review rather than a summary of what i recall. Overall, a very sobering account of what many endured and what a truly tragic situation is still going on today.

In just over 300 pages, Göran Rosenberg methodically delineates his own upbringing, the Zionist movement, and his journey to deconstruct its teachings. Beginning in the 1960s/70s, a major transformation took place not only in Israel, but also within Rosenberg who began to see that the “space for Jewish dissent on the issue of Zionism was nonexistent”. Since then, Göran has underwent the decades long process of witnessing and accepting the Israeli government’s complete disillusionment. Like an overgrazed scab, his endless research into the histories of the Jewish and Palestinian peoples has resulted in a discontinuous healing.

This book is difficult to read for several reasons: some of the sentences are just too long and complicated; sometimes he writes "...therefore..." and I have to re-read several times and still do not know how B follows from A; the writer jumps around a lot chronologically and I had to re-read to figure out what decade we were in. Still, his indictment of Zionism is pretty convincing and strong, fully backed by historical records, and I learned quite a bit. I wish there had been a bit more memoir, as the book really did not seem very "personal" to me despite the title.
