About the author

Frank Tyson

Frank Holmes Tyson is an England cricketer of the 1950s who became a journalist and cricket commentator after he emigrated to Australia in 1960. Nicknamed "Typhoon Tyson" by the press, he was regarded by many commentators as one of the fastest bowlers ever seen in cricket. He took 76 wickets (18.56) in 17 Test matches.

Tyson rarely appears on lists of best Test bowling averages, as they usually require a minimum of 100 Test wickets. However, he has the seventh lowest bowling average in Test cricket for bowlers who have taken over 75 wickets; no bowler since Tyson, furthermore, has taken more than twenty wickets at a lower average. In 2007, a panel of judges declared him Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World for 1955 due to his outstanding tour of Australia in 1954-55, when he was instrumental in retaining The Ashes.
