I am a big, big fan of this musical. I wish I could have seen the Broadway debut, but alas I was not born yet LOL.

I started following it when I saw "God That's Good" performed in another movie as part of a talent show. I then tracked down the recording they made for TV and I have the DVD. Of course, I was superexcited when the made the movie with Johnny Depp. I also had the pleasure of seeing Sweeney performed live and it was just as good as the other two mediums.

This is a book full of information. I will acknowledge it is an ARC so full edits might not be done yet but this book literally word vomits information at you. Some of the sentences are so short and obscure and there are these randomly tacked on paragraphs in places that seem to be after-thoughts. I think some of the information could have been left out and there was some that should have been included (the author neglects to mention Depp was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Sweeney, but talks about all the other awards the film/stars were nominated and/or won).

I feel like to the average reader, some of the musical details might not make sense and bog down the book. There is also quite a bit of repetition.

I enjoyed the extensive background we get to ultimately bring us the story of Sweeney and the behind-the-scenes look at how Sondheim's musical came together. However, the writing style made it difficult to focus on. It was so frenetic at times, I found myself re-reading sentences to make sure I understood.

Excellent nonfiction material, needs a lot of polishing.

My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

I would have given this book 4 stars for the wealth of information. However the book is rife with mistakes that I was able to spot easily even as someone who is oblivious to book errors. One cited the film release as (2000) accidentally. Most egregious were the easy google or IMDB fixes. He said that Victor Gamer played Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner)😂 on Alias and that B.J. Novak was Andy Bernard on the office, just to name a couple.

I have been a huge fan of Sweeney Todd ever since I first heard the original Broadway cast album when it was released. Since then I’ve seen multiple live stagings of the show, along with recorded versions. For me, it’s one of the greatest musicals ever written. So it was with great anticipation that I jumped at the chance of reading this new book about the show

For this reader, the book was very uneven. The recounting of how the show came into being and how it was developed was fascinating, and I learned a lot of information I hadn’t known. But the book just totally bogged down when the author discussed, in mind numbing detail, about all the major revivals of the show, and then later, about all the recordings. It was way too much information that was more appropriate for an appendix to the book. These sections really ruined my reading enjoyment. Additionally, the author repeats information many times throughout the book.

Overall a mixed bag, but still a worthwhile read for devoted fans of Sweeney.

My thanks to the publisher and to Netgalley for providing an ARC of the book.

This review originally published in Looking For a Good Book. Rated 3.0 of 5

Back in 1980, as I was finishing my freshman year of college, I changed my college major to Theatre Arts. I note this because the biggest topic of discussion among my peers at this time was the very unusual, dark musical that had very recently opened on Broadway, called Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It is quite possible that the Original Cast album for the show was among my first Original Cast album purchases (I own well over 200 now). I mention this because Sweeny Todd (as it is generally referred to) holds a special place in my theatre-loving heart. And so this book held a great deal of interest to me.

The book is … exhaustively comprehensive.

I definitely appreciated the history and background of the story and how Sondheim came to it and how he collaborated to make it happen. That Sondheim also gives credit to the person who wrote the play that prompted this musical is pretty impressive.

I’d read up on the history behind the story before, but that was many years ago and I appreciated getting this history here – it felt very comprehensive. In fact everything about this book is comprehensive. And that’s not necessarily a good thing.

There’s more here than the average fan really wants. And MUCH more here than the average reader would find enjoyable. Seriously … how many readers really want a deep dive into the different productions since the Broadway premiere? Even the various cast recordings is probably more comprehensive than most want. I have to admit I skimmed a lot of this, mostly because the names and dates, which meant almost nothing to me, felt like a prelude to a history test (which would never sit well with me).

And perhaps that’s the biggest issue with this book – the almost clinical, dry, presentation of a very comprehensive amount of research on one very small subject. I know that there are a lot of people who are very intensely fans of Sondheim and his work and perhaps that group of people will absolutely love this book. I’m a fan of theatre and musical theatre (retired from working in the industry) and I greatly appreciate Sondheim and this particular musical, but this book goes well beyond my interest level.

Looking for a good book? The opening chapters of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: Behind the Bloody Musical Masterpiece by Rick Pender are a really interesting read. The rest of the book however, will appeal to only the most ardent fans who love every bit of knowledge no matter how minute (because it’s probably here).
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.

Rick Pender’s collection of stories about Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd was such an engaging and fascinating read. As a fan of both the film and the musical, I truly did enjoy learning even more about the origins of them both. I even found myself feeling deeply upset at the fact that I never got the chance to see Gaten Mataratzzo play Tobias.

Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is a study in tragedy and revenge, perhaps literally the most tragic and yet cathartic at times, story in existence. And learning about both its origins and the variety of iterations that the play has seen over the years was a genuinely fun experience that I probably wouldn’t have delved too deeply into without having found this book.

All of that said, I didn’t particularly care for the organizational choice of the book. It seemed to jump around a lot, almost following something chronological for the most part, but seeming to forget what the main goal of each section was from time to time. Personally, I don’t know that I needed the list of other works that the performers were known for added on in parentheses right in the middle of a paragraph introducing their run as each character. This is something I feel like could have been included in a footnote or an appendix. Fortunately, the organizational structure was pretty much the only big complaint I had about the book as otherwise it was a lot of fun to read and learn about.

Many thanks to

This book is a fascinating look into the world of Sweeney Todd, perfect for fans and newcomers alike. It explores how the show was conceived, developed, and transformed through various productions worldwide, while offering insightful analysis of its characters and music. The sections on Tim Burton’s film adaptation are especially interesting, revealing the creative choices behind bringing the story to the screen.
Having performed in several Sondheim shows myself—including A Little Night Music, Into The Woods, and Passion—I deeply appreciate the complexities of Sondheim’s scores. This book captures that intricacy well, highlighting the genius behind his music and lyrics and the challenges performers face interpreting his work.
Although the narrative can sometimes feel dense with names and historical details, it is accessible and engaging. It’s thoughtfully written and provides a deeper understanding of how Sweeney Todd became one of the most unique and compelling musicals in theatre history.
Overall, it’s a rewarding read for anyone eager to learn more about Sondheim’s artistry and the enduring appeal of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

This book reads as an academic text of a niche subject, in this case the history of the brilliant musical Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Each chapter felt like its own academic paper, rather a collection of essays rather than one interconnected book. Some were more interesting to me than others (I really liked the origins of the tale of Sweeney and the history of the story, the history and analysis of different Sweeney cast albums was less interesting for me).

Like other reviewers, I wanted more from this book. At times it felt like each chapter was making the same point, referencing the same interviews.

But as I finish this book, I find myself with a desire to rewatch the film adaptation with fresh eyes and a need to listen to cast albums and compare the interpretations. So perhaps the author did his job after all.

Recommended for fans of musical theatre. If you have a vague interest in Sweeney Todd, I’m not sure this is the book for you.

Thank you to the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.

I'd like to thank Edelweiss and the publisher for allowing me a chance at reading this.

Ladies and gentlemen, I too can write a book of this caliber if I sat down, typed into google 'sweeney todd' and various key words like 'interview' or an actor's name. Because that's literally all this was. Junk sourced from various interviews, autobiographies, biographies, and documentaries.

I'm rather sad that as a musical theatre fan, I don't think I am the Sweeney Todd connoisseur or knowledgeable expert, but I am baffled on how little there was about the making of the musical. Being that this is a bit of an indie piece of work, there are no new interviews or knowledge to share that isn't already known.

If I were to write a Sweeney Todd musical book, I'd be looking into the Hal Prince archives, Sondheim archives, designer archives (costume, set, lighting). But the author did none of that. Hell, I'd even dig up the documentary about Sweeney when it came to London (there is a lot of drama and gossip there).

So, save your money. This ain't worth it. But if you're someone who is lazy and can't bother to use google, this will help you out.

As a long-time fan of Sweeney Todd, I was naturally excited to read a book dedicated to it, and Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd certainly has a lot to offer fans of the show, including a discussion of the original conception of the musical, a look at major productions, and an overview of all the songs. At first I wondered why foreign productions were being ignored; however, there was an appendix at the end that outlined some of the major productions across the world. Overall, the book provided interesting reading, and the various aspects of the show and its creation had clearly been well researched. The book will appeal to fans of musicals who like to know how shows were developed, and to fans of Sondheim and Sweeney Todd in particular. I am giving it four stars.

Probably really 2.5 stars. the extra half star is for effort.

This is a detailed, very detailed, some might say too detailed account of the inception of and various productions of Sweeney Todd. Some of the initial material is quite interesting, but the bulk of the book is the retelling of various productions and I didn't find that interesting at all. It's factual but not interesting.
This book read more like a list of facts than an interesting true story. Unlike the musical, it's completely apolitical. It doesn't place the musical into any greater context, or reflect how the identified themes of class, poverty, privilege etc are relevant or interest. The whole book is rather dry.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was an extremely well researched, informative and in depth analysis of the well renowned musical Sweeney Todd delving into the inspiration and making of the musical along with the various elements involved in the production process, the background songs to match the story, a deep dive into the numerous characters as well as the differing renditions of the demon barber of fleet street throughout the years.
A truly eye opening and riveting read perfect for all horror lovers old and young alike- as well as theatre fans.

what a perfect book to start off your spooky reads of the season(and it comes out october 2, 2025).

i very much enjoyed this deep niche deep dive into sweeney todd. i think with all the faucets of the story and history, this book had me twirling my hair reading new to me facts about all of them.

i would love to revisit this after seeing a live performance or even watching the movie. the theater girlies will eat this up.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.

I am not the target audience for this book - I like the stage production but would not consider myself a die-hard fan. This is an academic work best left to those who have a theater degree or work in that business. I enjoyed the historical tracings of the original story but felt bogged down by the recounting and descriptions for every production of Sweeney Todd.

If you are a fan of this musical, this is definitely a book to check out. It is very interesting to learn the background story. Some parts, however, did feel a bit like an info dump, and perhaps it could have benefited from a tighter edit. Overall, is a fascinating look at how the show was conceived and how it transformed into the musical it is today. The sections on the film adaptation are very interesting. Pender clearly shows what a genius Sondheim was.

Enjoyable but a bunch of factual and spelling errors and the author repeats facts often like he cut and pasted to meet a word count requirement.

For me, Stephen Sondheim serves as the quintessential peak of musical theatre composition. His poetry speaks volumes. His scores are the mark of creativity and study.

Sweeney Todd happens to be my favorite of Sondheim’s shows, so as soon as I received Rick Pender’s piece, I flew through it.

Pender did a great job of covering the decades and iterations of this show, detailing the stark differences between the various revivals, as well as Tim Burton’s movie adaptation.

While the book doesn’t necessarily cover new ground or offer nuanced novel analyses, I enjoyed following the arc of the show and the way it consistently impacts new audiences, year after year.

Fans of Sondheim and musical theatre will find this a highly enjoyable read.

Thank you to Bloomsbury Academic and NetGalley for the advance copy. All opinions are my own.

As a huge Sondheim fan, and a huge Sweeney Todd fan, I was super excited to reads this book.
I enjoyed reading the book and learnt a lot about how Sweeney Todd got to the stage, and insightful anecdotes about casting. I already knew a lot about this musical, and studied the melodrama at Uni so this wasn't new to me. However, there were still lots of brand new info that I can add to my 'trivia bank' on the show.

I wish I could have rated the book higher, but I found the book to be very repetitive. I thought I was loosing the plot at times as I found myself thinking 'I'm sure I've read this bit already' - and it turns out it was just mentioned earlier. There was also a lot of things that didn't feel relevant, and I felt was just used to pad the book out a bit more.
So, there were some really useful and interesting bits, and then some bits I found myself skipping over - it really was a case of two extremes.

Overall though, I would recommend it to fans of the show if they want to delve a bit deeper!
