Always a daydreamer, and often scolded for it by the grandmother who raised her, Norah Hess always wanted to be a writer. At eighteen, she was sent to Chicago to live with an aunt after her grandmother's death. It was there that she met her husband. After raising three children, Norah decided to write her first novel, and since then has had fifteen published romances. After her husband passed away, she and her two cats moved to Palm Springs, where the desert and mountains inspire her to write her Western romances.

Note to self: amnesia trope plus several occurrences of attempted rape (against heroine and two young Indian girls.)

Norah Hess is known to me for her 1990s bodice ripper style novels, the hero is often a manwhore in the beginning visiting the saloon girls, and there always seems to be a rape scene in the background. I’ve read several of her stories years ago, some sat ok and I loved, others did not.

This one starts with the hero roaming the territory in the new spring, looking for a mystery girl he saw riding on horseback a few months back before the snow hit. (He didn’t approach her then, because his hair was a mess). He is determined that she is his soulmate. So he stops at a trading post to ask around if anyone knows whom the redhead might be, and in comes a group of villainy brothers with two teenage Indian girls. One brother yanked the 13-yr old onto his lap and was squeezing her breasts, shoving his hands under her doeskin dress, she’s screaming and terrified, he starts to drag her upstairs to ‘have himself a virgin’….

This is our hero’s inner thoughts:
“Anger began to grow inside Stone as the girl struggled against the man, who only laughed at her small fists beating against his chest. Stone gritted his teeth but kept his mouth shut. He told himself that the maid hadn’t been struck, that maybe the bully was just having sport with her.”

Hmmm 🤔 nope. Just having sport? The problem is that this author does write the stories realistically for this time period, I don’t doubt rape was rampant back then. Yet the gritty parts of history with how peoples attitudes towards rape was back then don’t age well.

So this hero ended up saving the 13 yr old girl by slamming his shot glass on the bar counter. That was enough to scare the four brothers into immediately relinquishing the girl (because they had seen him fight viciously before). But then they turned around and left the bar with the other terrified girl. The young girl asked the hero to please rescue her friend also, the hero said NO because he might have to fight them then, and that the girl looked tough enough to hold her own. Hold her own?! Against 4 rapists at once?! This ain’t no hero of mine!

No rating, I didn’t even get that far into the story. I just know this isn’t a good fit for me.

This book had a very promising start with a likeable heroine and more than likeable hero.

One day riding on his way home hero falls in love at first sight with the heroine. From that day forward he is determined to find her and make her fall in love with him so that he then can make her his wife. He finds her when he least expects it, almost naked and hurt from the beating she received at the hands of a person who should protect her the most.

From the start he is gentle, considerate and protective. A decent kind of guy who feels bad about lying to our heroine. It turns out she has amnesia and he lies that they are married. Although he fears and it pains him that she might leave him he tells her the truth pretty soon and apologizes for lying. I believe that this is the first amnesia story in which the heroine doesn't take at face value everything the hero says. She questions him, what he supposedly knows about her life as well as his motives.

As I said at the beginning, a very promising start. But once the author introduced the secondary romance then a third romance I started to lose interest and I am sorry to say I ended up skimming the ending. Put simply the book became repetitive and unimaginative after the first couple of chapters.

P.S. There is no cheating, no rape or forced seduction. There are several attempts of rape by the villain.

This arresting story will hold you spellbound from the very first few pages. Not only is the tale historically accurate, but the characters have real grit.

This is the story of Flame Martin, a hard working female cattle rancher with an abusive mother and a mysteriously absent father. Small and fair of face, with flaming red curls, Flame is a rare beauty in the western wilderness. Little wonder that she unfortunately catches the eye of her mother’s latest lover, Deke Cobbs. Deke tries to rape Flame one dark and stormy night, but Flame eludes him. Unfortunately, her mother assumes Flame is a rival for Deke’s affections and beats Flame in a jealous rage. Flame stumbles out into the night, her memory gone.

Flame’s neighbor, Steve Falcon, rescues Flame and brings her back to his cattle ranch to heal. To disguise their awkward situation, Steve tells Flame she is his wife. Although she tries to remember, Flame has no memory of ever falling in love with the handsome man. Over the course of weeks, Flame and Steve develop a relationship, although each suffers from bouts of jealousy.

Shilo, Steve’s boyhood Indian friend, has woman troubles of his own. He has fallen in love with Little Bird, an orphan Ute Steve rescued from a band of rowdy ranch riders. Does Steve still claim Little Bird as his own? If so, how can Steve keep Little Bird and a new wife, as well? Flame also sees how much Steve enjoys Little Bird’s company and her heart sinks every time she sees them together.

Miserably, all seems lost, until a stranger appears, a handsome gentleman who seems oddly familiar to Flame. Is this new arrival the answer to Flame’s prayers? Will he help her to remember her shadowy past? Ms. Hess throws in a nice twist at the end of the story, too, to peak the reader’s interest.

Flame Martin has worked on her ranch like a slave for 14 years - since her father left her sex craved mother. Her mother has taken multiple lovers during that time while Flame has run the ranch. Stone Falcon owns the biggest ranch around. He saw Flame once from a distance and fell hard. In the spring he sets out to find her. He does, but she's in bad shape, having been beaten and thrown outside in a storm by her huge mother. When she wakes, she has amnesia and Stone tells her they're married to protect her. He does tell her the truth later, but she still can't remember, even when her father and the last love she had to put up with of her mother's show up. Lots of sub-plots about Indian friends, her father and other characters. Good easy read. Lots of sex and killing.

Flame is here name...

Stone is attractive handsome rugged man, the moment he saw Flame he wanted this decent, innocent, young, beautiful woman. Flame had trouble with her mother, who seems to hate her. Something happens in their home and she was beaten and lost her memory of what happened to her, But, Stone is the guy found and wants her. The beauty Flame he was looking for, Stone, also willing to marry her. This is a entertaining read with romance, drama and revenge of evil villains. And of course a happy ending after.

Just Bad- Some Spoilers

I find it hard to believe that a book that is 395 pages felt like nothing happened. But also that everything was going on at once. There were waaaaay too many side plots and characters. But then the author would simply get rid of them when it was convenient for her I suppose. The “misunderstandings” were fairly stupid. And with no actual character development I didn’t believe the relationship between H and h. Thank god I didn’t pay for this.

Warning: abusive males and several attempts of rape.
The main characters were a handsome rancher, an abused female whose father left when she was 13 a mother who is man-crazy, a best friend d who is a Ute Indian chieftain.
This takes place in the old west days where women only have one purpose, either working to be mothers or on their backs.
It actually does have a good ending but was difficult to get through.

Nice for teenagers

Bored my socks off. The typical:does he/she really live me? Why does he/she look at another. Went back and forth and got really on my nerves towards the (bitter) end.

Predictable

I've got to admit, the read was entertaining. Now, the author uses references, phrases and names objects that didn't even exist on the timetable of this story; rollercoaster? OH COME ON!! Flame utilizes a vocabulary more apt for a Rhodes Scholar. (Wax on poetic). Ok, ok, it was entertaining. Too many coincidences make the story so predictable. I refuse to believe this book has been a bestseller.

It was a fast read and I enjoyed it! I wish I was gifted with the ability to design interesting story plots & be able to write them down. I liked the complexity of the characters and the different relationships and lifestyles represented in the book!
