Here in Iberia, Costcos are few and far between. Currently, there are no Costco stores in Portugal. None.
Although Costco has several stores in Spain — Madrid, Bilbao, and a new one under construction in Málaga — Sevilla is the most popular location for those in southern Algarve and Alentejo regions. Madrid is a closer option for people in northern Portugal. If you live in Faro, we’re talking about a driving time of a little over two hours; from Lisbon or Central Portugal, it’s at least a 4.5 or six-hour drive. Nonetheless, many who live farther than us from Costco make the drive to stock up on stuff.
Nowhere else do we find such a plethora of familiar Hellman’s mayonnaise in big glass jars, not plastic squeeze bottles. Six-packs of Heinz beans at down-to-earth prices (though we wish Costco stocked Bush’s). Listerine. Kleenex. Oreos. Libby’s. Tommy Hilfiger. Polo. Levis. Even the Jolly Green Giant. All alongside packages of 100% beef frank. Pure peanut butter, jams, and jellies without added sugar, as well as Costco’s famous rotisserie chicken, chicken bakes, foot-long hot dogs, and pepperoni pizza are friendly reminders of the place.
