About the author

Nicolas Vanier is a French adventurer, writer and filmmaker.

His latest feature film, Loup ("Wolf") was released at the end of 2009 and was presented at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. Loup is about the life of the Evens tribe in North Eastern arctic Siberia, in the Verkhoïansk mountain range, who live by raising large herds of caribou, which involves protecting them from attacks by wolves.

J'avais lu auparavant le livre de Nicolas Vanier sur la Yukon Quest (course de traîneau à chiens de plus de 1000 kilomètres) donc forcément, c'était similaire. Malgré tout, le narrateur a une façon tellement dynamique et passionnée de raconter, de décrire et d'informer que je ne me suis jamais ennuyée et ça ne m'a pas paru trop redondant.

«Дикая Одиссея» Ванье очень атмосферна! Только представьте: снег, камни и бежит собачья упряжка по поверхности замерзших рек и скалам, сквозь бураны… Тут много приключений, встреч с неординарными представителями народов Китая, Дальнего Востока, Сибири и даже Монголии. А еще сквозь все пересказы перипетий их путешествия из поселка на берегу Тихого океана проходит красной нитью идея верности и дружбы животного и человека. Ведь действительно (безотносительно книги): некоторые истории дружбы начинались с прекращения судебного процесса, а некоторые – в пути.

C est l aventurier qui récite son aventure. Il parvient à nous plonger dans son univers dans le grand Froid. Il fait aussi quelques appartés pour nous partager ses brèves réflexions philosophiques où sociétales qui sont bienvenues

Дуже крута книжка, про відносини не між людьми, а людей з собаками і про довіру та підтримку, що здатні провести через будь-що, на що ладна природа в диких і віддалених місцях. Головне - "Вірити в своїх собак!".

What an adventure!! I've been daydreaming of riding a dog sleigh for ages, and this book brought my dream ever so slightly closer.

Nicolas Vanier successfully conveys the beauty of his expedition, with a lot of respect and love for his dogs, and nature. I wish more people could see nature the way he sees it, as something precious that needs to be protected. I also found his encounters with the natives of the tundra fascinating, it's a simple way of life that we've sadly become disconnected from in the western world.

A read I heartily recommend to all adventurers at heart - really, to anyone yearning for a little escape; don't we all.
