A poetic and poignant ode to twenty-something life, this collection will deeply resonate with anyone who has ever lived in, loved, or dreamed of New York City. A must-read for fans of Rupi Kaur and Mari Andrew.
In her debut poetry collection, Lindsay MacMillan takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster through early rooftop highs and subway lows, first dates and soul-mate friendships, corporate offices and existential crises.
From the rush of a new crush to the ache of heartbreak to the numbness that sets in when life and love burn us out, each poem or “vignette” explores an ordinary moment that shapes us.
Grouped by New York’s iconic locations, these vignettes reveal the magic and messiness of a city and a life stage where the bravest thing we can do is to keep our hearts wide open. And if we look foolish or fall on our faces—well, it’s New York, so no one’s watching.
Except the city herself, who might just be our most complicated love of all, making us feel limitless one moment and insignificant the next.
As this emotionally resonant collection shows, New York serves as a mirror to our growth and a reminder that if we can make it here, we can make it anywhere.
"‘it means we have our ups and downs,’ I explain. ‘and the shape of our relationship mimics the shape of the skyline.’" WOW WOW WOW! The first poem had me absolutely hooked. This book is absolutely beautiful. When I first picked it up, I was entranced by the cover. The words are even more enticing. The poems she writes continue to pull you in, feeling her feelings. She writes in a way that makes you feel like you experienced these moments.
Lindsay Macmillan, the Author and Poet of :” I Love You Like New York” “Poems and Vignettes” has vividly described and contrasts, “The City That Never Sleeps.” through poignant, expressive, heartfelt, memorable and thought-provoking images of scenery and landscape and the colorful and dramatic people of New York City. I was mesmerized and captivated through Lindsay Macmillan’s poetic verse and short stories in a sensory feel, of the sights, smells, sounds, touch, and taste of different places in New York. I love the unique and creative ways that the author describes her dreams, ambitions, fears, aspirations, hopes, and heartbreak. The author takes us to popular places in New York, and describes the modern dating and feelings of love in one’s twenties and thirties. In a witty way, Lindsay Macmillan mentions, texting, ghosting, dating and surviving relationships in one of the busiest cities in the world. This reminds me of the song, “New York, New York”, “If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere. It’s up to you, New York, New York”. I highly recommend the Love Poems and appreciate that this is poetry from women.
The poems in this book are so beautifully written -- the setting, the characters, and the theme all shine in this poetry collection. Macmillan really captures the rawness of what it feels like to be in your 20s navigating your way through work, friendships, and love.
It's so relatable and the turns of phrases in the poems are genius! If you live in New York, there are extra special hints of places near and dear -- but you definitely don't have to live in New York for it to resonate. She really captures the heart of the early adulthood human experience.
This collection of poems and vignettes is about the authors experiences living in New York City in her 20’s. Divided into 9 sections it covers all aspects of New York City from the subway to working in the city to living in the city. A central theme in all the sections is love. Loving others, figuring out how to love herself, loving and picking herself over others.
Each poem (I almost want to call them stories because these are not rhyming poems) is unique. I am a poetry novice readers so those more experienced may see this collection differently. What it meant to me was a view into a 20’s something woman living and working in arguably the greatest city in the world. Some poems are less than a page and others cover several pages. Each poem was like reading a story to me without all the background needed in a story. Straight to the point and lettering the reader interpret the story being the poems. I also loved the authors voice. It is very real and funny and a joy to read.
You might be wondering what does it mean to love someone “like New York.” That is definitely a question that had me intrigued enough to read this book! And here’s the answer - “it means we have our ups and downs, and the shape of our relationship mimics the shape of the skyline.”
I fell in love with that line! As a New Yorker, I can absolutely relate to that description. I think, every good relationship has its ups and downs, but the great ones are like the New York skyline - there’s a lot more ups with all the skyscrapers we’ve got around here!
This collection of poems and vignettes was such a wonderful read for me. It’s a love letter to NYC, but it also very much reminds me to be grateful that I don’t have to date anymore! 😂🫣
New York is one of my favorite places to travel, and this book completely took me there. I didn’t expect a poetry collection to make me feel this emotional, but wow, this one really did.
This book felt like a collection of little moments in the city, and reading it made me feel like I was walking the streets of New York all over again. I’ve traveled to a lot of places, but there’s just something about New York that feels magical, and this book captured that feeling so perfectly.
It’s beautifully written and deeply emotional. You don’t have to be a poetry reader to enjoy this one, trust me. I really, really loved it.
I am not usually a poetry reader but I was definitely intrigued by this book so I gave it a shot and I'm so glad I did! I Love You New York is a beautiful compilation of poems and stories about the author's experience living in New York and falling in love, often. It's emotional and insightful, and I really enjoyed curling up in the evenings to sink into a few more poems. I think folks with experience with New York will love this book even more, but I can still picture the scenes based on their vivid descriptions. Definitely well worth the read.
My favorite part from this book is this: And call me a dramatic, creative type But an un-hurt heart Is a high price to pay For a half-lived life. ❤️
I really enjoyed this book of poetry, and how you did feel the city of New York come through many of them. The author does a great job with really putting emotions and scenery through out these verses. Quite a few of these poem I did really resonate with from when I was younger and understood the feeling of trying to find love while creating these imaginary scenarios in your head just after the first date. Some of my favorites were "the blue truth", "lipstick smudges", and"golden". At times I almost felt as if these were Taylor Swift lyrics, as they were so poetic with how she uses words and then when I read the acknowledgments, she does a shout out to her music being a soundtrack for her and I can totally feel that. Thank you to the author for the complementary copy and not being afraid to bare her soul for others to read, and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the book tour invite. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
This author has written some well known fiction books, but this is her debut poetry collection.
The book is broken up into 9 parts with each part a different aspect of her time living in New York City when she was in her 20s.
Most of the poems/vignettes are about relationships with a heavy emphasis on dating life in the city.
I liked this book because I totally understood each of the selections. Usually for poetry, I feel a little lost and I always think I’m missing a deeper meaning. This collection stands out because I felt I was traveling along with the author as she goes about the daily interactions of life in a big city.
I enjoyed the poem about Lindsay seeing a guy on the subway doing a crossword puzzle while at the same time swiping dating apps.
There is also a great poem that anyone who visits a Trader Joe’s will appreciate. She goes in for like 4 items and comes out with bags so heavy she has to almost drag them the 10 blocks to her apartment. Been there.
11/10 recommend!!! My favorite book of 2025 so far. I knew I would love it because I've been following Lindsay's poems on Instagram and jumped at the chance for an early (signed!) copy as part of her launch squad, but it even surpassed my expectations and had so many poems I hadn't seen before. I absolutely loved how the poems/vignettes were grouped by places (different parts of NYC, from the subway to rooftops to bars to corporate offices to apartments, etc). I've never read anything like this. It's not fully poetry but not fully short stories either. I love the way Lindsay blends genres and gives it her own unique style and voice. Thank you so so much for gifting me an advanced copy. ❤️
I absolutely loved this collection of poems and vignettes. I’m a huge fan of Carrie Bradshaw, and this gave me big Sex and the City vibes, especially the early seasons. Although I’ve never lived in New York, I have some incredible memories from countless trips. I ran the NY Marathon in my 30s, which made me fall even more in love with the city. This book made me nostalgic for my 20s and 30s in some ways, but also thankful to be older and settled into this peaceful chapter. All of this to say that I think readers of any age would appreciate this heartfelt collection. It is fabulous!
Title: I Love You Like New York Author: Lindsay MacMillan Publication Date: February 3, 2026
5/5 ⭐️
These poems and vignettes felt like a love letter to the city, to timing, and to the kind of connection that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. I loved how the story captured New York as both a setting and a feeling: messy, hopeful, overwhelming, and full of possibility. I used to dream of living in New York and I can’t wait to travel there, this poetry book got me more excited!
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours and @lindsaymacwrites for my gifted copy!
Everything I wanted and so much more!!! Thank you for sending me an early copy as part of your launch squad. This is a truly gorgeous and distinctive book. I feel like you can pick Lindsay's books out so easily -- only she has that specific "vignette" style...part poetry, part prose, and entirely amazing. I had chills the whole time. Gifting it to all my friends to re-live our twenties now that we are in a different life stage!
I was hooked from the prologue. Then I read the first poem (the titular poem) and knew that this book was going to be absolutely magical. Chills everywhere!!! The way Lindsay uses dialogue in the poems and places us in the scene is so distinctive, and it feels like a bunch of mini stories that all weave together and also have the most poetic language and emotion. Will not stop talking about this book!
Lindsay MacMillan captures feelings I’ve had but didn’t know how to put in words. How does she do this? I couldn’t stop reading as these poems unleashed nostalgia, laughter, heartache, gratitude, and hope. The book cover is so beautiful that I leave it on my coffee table, where it has been captivating readers of all ages. The themes resonate beyond 20-somethings, for anyone who has ever fallen in love.
I Love You Like New York is a stunning collection of poems. I found myself saying, “Wow,” often. The cover is stunning and reflects (in more ways than one) the reflections within these pages and the connection of Lindsay MacMillan’s words to her (our) beloved city. Wholly unique and powerfully voiced: WOW. Just wow.
Absolutely gorgeous poems and short stories about dating in NYC! I've been following Lindsay's journey since she started posting poems on Instagram back in 2018, and it's a joy to see everything come together in this collection. Her style is so unique -- part poetry, part short story, and it made me FEEL so alive reading each poem and re-living my twenties.
I WILL BE SHOUTING ABOUT THIS BOOK FROM THE ROOFTOPS!!! I've never even lived in NYC but I've dreamed of it and felt literally transported there in the poems/vignettes. And all the feels of the dating app chaos, fragile hopes, and female friendships were so beautifully depicted.
A must-read for any woman in her twenties or beyond.
FINALLY Lindsay published her poems!!! I'm a big fan of her novels, but nothing compares to her poetry/vignettes. It's unlike anything I've read before and totally captures the angst and emotion of twenties life in NYC. It brought me right back to the city and that life stage. I'm so grateful to get to witness this book makes its debut into the world. It's going to be something so very special...
This made me laugh, cry, have chills, nostalgia, and all the emotions!! What an absolutely exquisite book and so unique. Haven't read anything like it. I don't usually read poetry but this felt more like short stories -- with super poetic language -- and I loved it so much. Need to re-read and share with all my friends...and also book a trip to NYC! It made me want to visit so badly.
I've been waiting for this book for so long and it did not disappoint!!! I love how the self-growth and female friendships are emphasized so much and the men are mere side characters on the way to finding ourselves. An absolute must-read for any woman who has been in the NYC dating scene, and I also think any life stage/location could relate.
best poetry book i've ever read. i'm not sure i would even call it poetry but whatever it is, more of this please!!! i love how i'd gotten a glimpse into some of the poems from lindsay's instagram but most were new and i'd never seen them before. it's been amazing seeing lindsay's journey and this is by fav my favorite book of hers yet.
ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED WITH THIS BOOK!!! I initially read it to support Lindsay but then truly fell in love with it for the writing itself. It transported me back in time and made me so nostalgic for my friends and my twenties. Thank you for writing this, Lindsay! Every woman in her twenties (and beyond) should read it.
This debut poetry collection is a recollection of first loves, that awful heartbreak and loss. The emotions seep off the pages, and I could so easily relate to them. As a New York girl, I loved that they take place all over the city. This is a wonderful debut that I truly enjoyed.
A truly phenomenal debut poetry book, especially for anyone who has ever lived in NYC or been in the dating scene. I love Lindsay's novels, but her poems and vignettes are really my favorite. So excited to see her poet career take off.
easiest 5 stars ever. i don't even want to explain this book that much. just read it and you will get it. trust me. this is lindsay's signature style. her poems/vignettes are out of this world gorgeous.
You have no idea how long I've waited for this book. I found Lindsay on Instagram super early, back before the pandemic, and have been waitingggg for her to put out a book in this signature poetry/vignette style.
Full of hope you just want to soak up! Usually, I don’t think of poetry books as the sort that you read cover to cover, but Lindsey’s poems are so story-forward, it’s hard not to just keep going. I did.
