Mary Hunton's Martyr series (Hunton has promised seven books in all) is an amazing continuing story of the long cosmic battle between the Seven Sins and the Seven Virtues, eternal principles embodied in the living. This is dark urban fantasy set in the United States of the near future, and, to put it mildly, things aren't going well for the good guys. The first four books of this series were amazing, and the 5th volume, Perdition, keeps the petal to the metal. While the action in Perdition is fast-paced and lethal, it's the desperate clinging to hope in the midst of overwhelming dread and despair that makes this chapter of the story special. 

The Martyrs (led by the Virtues) are forced to deal with the tragic loss that occurred at the end of Volume 4 (Temptation), and the losses pile up over the course of Volume 5. PTSD is a huge theme in this story, and Hunton explores its depths and makes it real. But the hope in this story is real, too, even if it seems ephemeral. 

Brace yourself for heart-wrenching emotional turmoil, beautifully and realistically rendered. This is an unforgettable series, and I'm eager for more!

Alright, every time one of these books releases I know I’m gonna curl up in the fetal position at some point. Geeze…. This one was a hard journey. If you’ve read the last 4 books you already know there are some SECRETS that have been kept or not known or hidden. Well, that all ends here. People you never expected to hold back or betray are revealed in all their imperfect glory. People who have always come through, suddenly fail. Unexpected friends become brother in arms. And Wrath. Unholy hell. Things are not the same after this, and you’re gonna cry.
