I've hated Cavin McCarthy since the day he made me cry in a school closet.
He was my tormentor. My nightmare. The cruel boy who turned my name into a punchline and my life into hell.
Now? He's my fiancé.
An arranged marriage neither of us wanted, brokered by families who deal in blood and power. I'd refuse if I could. But my sister is dying, and the McCarthy's hold the key to saving her life.
So I'll walk down the aisle. I'll say the vows. I'll become Mrs. Cavin McCarthy.
But I'll never forgive him.
Except... the monster I remember isn't the man standing before me now. The boy who destroyed me has become someone who fights for me. Protects me. Touches me like I'm something precious instead of broken.
And when his hands are on my throat, his voice rough in my ear, I'm not thinking about revenge anymore.
Fueled by dark chocolate and even darker coffee, USA Today bestselling author Jane Henry writes what she loves to read – character-driven, unputdownable romance featuring dominant alpha males and the powerful heroines who bring them to their knees. She’s believed in the power of love and romance since Belle won over the beast, and finally decided to write love stories of her own.
This wasn’t the mafia romance I expected, but it ended up being exactly what I wanted.
The story surprised me by being far more emotionally grounded than the dark chaos I was prepared for. This Irish mafia arranged marriage throws Erin and Cavin together after years of resentment from their school days, and that shared history gives their forced marriage real weight. The tension is immediate, but so is the pull between them, even when neither wants to admit it.
What stood out most was how thoughtfully Erin and Cavin’s relationship was handled. Erin doesn’t forgive easily, Cavin takes real accountability for his past, and their communication feels refreshing for the genre. Erin’s neurodivergence is written with care and strength, and watching Cavin become her safe place added genuine warmth to their dynamic. Once they connect, the shift from enemies to partners feels natural, protective, and emotionally satisfying.
The plot keeps things moving with family obligations, underground fighting, and touches of mafia intrigue, even if the larger conflict stays more in the background. Still, the emotional payoff carries the story. Wicked Altar isn’t relentlessly dark, but it’s warm, engaging, and deeply readable, with a satisfying HEA and a strong start to a new mafia series.
I closed this book feeling content, invested, and curious about what’s next for the McCarthys.

Thank you, Jane Henry and Valentine PR, for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
I went into this expecting dark chaos, high drama, and emotional suffering… and instead got something oddly soft, communicative, and quietly addictive. That’s probably on me, I read a lot of dark romance, so my darkness scale may be a little skewed, but either way, this surprised me.
This is an arranged marriage / former bully romance that does something surprisingly rare: the characters actually talk. Erin and Cavin confront their past head-on, articulate the damage that was done, and (crucially) Cavin takes real accountability without excuses. Erin accepts his apology when it feels earned and chooses to move forward instead of marinating in endless angst. It felt emotionally mature in a way I wasn’t expecting, and that choice paid off for me.
What really worked was the relationship itself. Their connection develops quickly and very easily (borderline insta-love) but the communication, mutual care, and constant emotional check-ins made it feel safe and intentional rather than lazy. Friends and family actively root for them, which removed a lot of manufactured conflict and made the romance feel grounded and supported. Even the intimacy leaned into consent, reassurance, and caretaking energy, which absolutely worked for the dynamic.
The plot has just enough action, tension, intrigue, and forward momentum to keep things moving. I kept turning pages not because everything was explosive, but because it was steady and emotionally satisfying. That said, if you’re here strictly for chaos, moral collapse, or relentless darkness, this may feel too gentle. Cavin’s refusal to fully listen to Erin at certain points was frustrating, and some developments resolved a little too neatly for my taste.
Still, this book was bingeable in the best way. It’s not what I expected, yet it completely worked for my mood. Soft obsession, emotional safety, knitted hats worn during fights - I was done for.
Final verdict: Less dark than anticipated, more emotionally functional than expected, and somehow still addictive.
always have pretty high expectations for Jane Henry because she’s an amazing writing and as always she did not disappoint. This book was such a dark and wild journey and I was so along for the ride! It full of suspense, tension and lots of good smut. This plot was so intense, I love an arranged marriage romance but it hits even better when he bullied her in high school and they hate each other. There’s a mystery element to it as well, and as the tension builds Im sitting on the edge of my seat clutching my kindle extremely tight! The plot twists were incredible and I honestly host love how everything hit together. It never felt like “oh this part has too much plot too little romance” or “why is there so much romance I wanna know what happens?” Because she’s just an amazing author and there’s this perfect balance between plot and romance. Their chemistry though? It is off the charts. The banter and tension from beginning to end was addicting and I loved them from start to finish. Also the heroine is slightly neurodivergent which adds so much complexity to her character, as someone slightly neurodivergent, I liked the ways he was portrayed, because most of the time… neurodivergence is not obvious, it’s in the little things that do a lot. And gosh I loved Cavin.. yes he’s a little bit of an asshole at the start because you bullied her of course she told on you?? But watching him realise how gone he is for her really was the sweetest thing. The man is the definition of WHIPPED, he has his guards sending hourly updates on her just a week after they met again. He’s also a fighter… so he’s hawt as hell and I also loved his character development. I loved a bunch of the side characters too and PLEASE i need the next book to be Bridget and Declan!!!! There’s so much potential there! I enjoyed this book so much, and it might be a new favourite of mine. I give this a 5/5
5⭐️ 3🌶️ 🔥Dark Irish Mafia Romance 🔥Arranged Marriage 🔥Enemies-to-Lovers 🔥BDSM 🔥Bully 🔥He Falls First 🔥Neurodivergent Hero/Heroine 🔥Dual First Person POV
I cannot properly express how much I love Erin and Cavin. Erin is a phenomenal character and whlie it isn’t specially said, she’s neurodivergent. Her anxiety and panic attacks were authentic and written with care. She uses grounding techniques such as tapping and counting to calm herself. Erin sees the world in black and white, but struggles to understand people because they live in the grey. She is strong and capable, and with someone in her corner for the first time she’s able to be herself. Cavin is dangerous, commanding, and intuitive, but also kind and protective. He isn’t the boy that used to torment her in secondary school. Cavin survived a grueling upbringing that made him the man he is today, duty bound and loyal to his family. Except now, he’s keeping a secret from his family. He’s being forced to pay a tribute and doesn’t even know to whom. Erin’s younger sister is very sick with a grim diagnoisis. She would do anything for her sister, including agreeing to an arranged marriage to her former bully, Cavin. The arranged marriage might be a bussiness arragnement for Cavin, but for her, its the only way she can save her sister’s life. Cavin isn’t a fan of Erin either, she constantly got him in trouble in school and hated her ‘Little Miss Perfect’ attitude. Now older, he notices things about Erin for the first time, he picks up on her anxiety and is amazed with how she thinks. Initially she can’t forgive Cavin for how he treated her, to say they had a rough start would be an understatement. They butted heads and fought each other and their attraction towards each other. Erin holds out, but when Cavin apologizes and puts in the effort to get to know her, they develop a deep emotional connection. This was a tension filled slow burn, but when they catch flame, it heats up fast. The mystery of the tributes unfurls in a way that is maddeningly addictive. It appears as the background story to their romance but it all comes to a head at the end. They have quiet the journey with twists and turns but they work together to find out who’s behind everything. Even though their world is brutal and unforgiving, they fight for each other and choose to love each other everyday. Jane has written a devastatingly beautiful romance with an intricate plot, details galore, and layered characters.

Wicked Altar by Jane Henry is the first book in The McCarthy Family Legacy series and features an arranged marriage between Erin and Cavin set in a dark mafia world. With tropes like bad boy x good girl, obsessed MMC, neurodivergent heroine, past school bullying, and dark secrets, this book sounded like it was made for me.
And honestly? It started off pretty strong. The premise was intriguing, the early character dynamics worked, and for a while I was genuinely invested. Erin was interesting at first, and the story had the potential to go somewhere dark and emotionally intense.
Sadly, it didn’t last.
After the initial setup, the pacing completely fell apart. The story started to feel extremely rushed, with one action scene after another and very little room for development. Multiple scenes felt unfinished, as if they were cut short just to move the plot along faster. From a certain point on, I felt like I was speed-reading through important moments that should have carried much more weight.
The ending was especially disappointing. The big reveal came and went so quickly that it barely had any impact, which is a shame because it should have been a defining moment for the story. Despite loving the tropes in theory, I eventually reached the point where I was just hoping the book would end.
I was also really annoyed by several side characters. Erin’s parents were obviously awful, but the behavior of Declan’s family toward the end felt unnecessary and poorly handled, adding frustration rather than depth or tension.
Overall, Wicked Altar had a lot of promise and all the right tropes, but the rushed execution and pacing issues ruined the experience for me. This could have been a great dark mafia romance, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to its potential.
"Wicked Altar" by Jane Henry is SO GOOD. What an addictive story! I found myself completely engaged by it from start to finish. I found it to be emotional, mysterious, and riveting, sexy, scandalous, and dramatic. It is an enemies-to-lovers arranged marriage Irish mafia book between two people who knew each other when they were kids. Cavin McCarthy was a relentless bully towards Erin Kavanagh when they were younger. She was a homebody who liked being outside and liked to read, which made her quiet and introspective. Being bullied by Cavin is something she has never forgotten, and it has shaped who she is as an adult. He has always been mad that she tried to get him in trouble, and she never forgot the way he made her feel. Now, as adults, they have been entered into an arranged marriage to benefit both of their mafia families. Once they accept their shared fate, they begin to have a functional relationship that turns into more slowly over time. The spice is excellent here. I loved the push and pull and dramatics between the two families. I am not big into mafia books, but I might change my mind because of this one. The audiobook featuring the voiceover narrations of Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross is fantastic. They perfectly fit their characters and play off of one another with expert precision. I loved listening to this one. Tons of nail-biting moments. Can't wait for the next installment in the series!
Thank you to Jane Henry and VPR Audio for the complimentary ALC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
This audiobook is mind blowing because the author wrote it to be—every command, pause and power shift crafted with such precision that the narrators don’t perform it… they unleash it.
This is wicked… in the most devastating way possible.
From the first page, this story grips you hard and never lets go.
What begins as childhood cruelty spirals into heart-gripping love , brutal twists, and shocking revelations that keep tightening the hold.
Cavin McCarthy is an ultimate dark book-boyfriend-control incarnate. Ruthless , strategic, devastatingly dominant and dangerously intuitive. He reads Erin with unnerving accuracy. He knows her sensitivities, her limits, the way her body reacts before her mind catches up. He knows exactly when to push, when to restrain and how to unravel her completely without ever rushing her.
And the girl he once broke? Erin is no longer fragile. She is innocent yet bold, intelligent, quietly fearless—fire wrapped in scars. Without realizing it, she terrifies Cavin. She sees him. Challenges him. Becomes his weakness. And instead of fighting it, he claims it—possessive, unapologetic and completely focused on her.
Bound by an arranged marriage forged in blood and desperation to save her dying sister, Erin is betrayed and dragged into the McCarthy world, where loyalty is lethal and truths hit harder every time they surface. Just when you think you understand Cavin’s motives, the story twists again, sharper, darker, deeper.
Every instinct tells Erin he’s the enemy… yet her body craves him anyway.! Cavin doesn’t soften himself, but he is patient. He unravels her slowly—with command, restraint and praise that sinks deep and stays there. When he lowers his voice and tells her she’s doing exactly what he wants, it hits harder than any touch—and he knows it. Her surrender is chosen, intoxicating, and it pleases him in ways that blur power into devotion.
The tension is feral, especially inside his club—where desire is currency and control is everything. His jealousy is primal. His possessiveness unmistakable. And instead of fear, Erin feels heat—because being wanted that completely is addictive.
🎧 Audiobook Excellence The heat works because the writing is fearless—and the performances unleash it. Wes Ross as Cavin McCarthy—GAME OVER🫠 Velvet-dark, commanding, and lethal with intention, his delivery turns every line into a controlled strike. You don’t just hear Cavin—you feel him.
Kai Kennicott’s portrayal of Erin is stunning—layered, emotional, and quietly powerful. She captures Erin’s strength, vulnerability, and awakening beautifully, grounding every moment with raw authenticity.
🔥 Listener Warning: Listen with headphones… unless you want to explain why you suddenly stopped breathing.
Jane delivers a jaw-dropping masterclass in dark mafia romance—layering erotic tension, betrayal, brutal loyalty, kink-charged power dynamics and emotional depth with fearless precision. The chemistry smolders, the danger never loosens its grip and every page pulses with intent.
Some love stories save you. This one claims you! The audiobook makes sure you feel every second of it.
As a huge fan of this author's "Dangerous Doms" Irish mafia series, (that I consumed over 4 years ago), I was anxiously awaiting the next generation! And - whew - this did not disappoint!
While you don't HAVE to know all the stories that proceed this one, I highly recommend it. Knowing the history on how the older members of the McCarthy clan handled betrayals and threats makes what is happening in this storyline even more delicious!
Cavin McCarthy has nothing to prove when it comes to loyalty to his family. Just out of prison, he is arranged to marry Erin Kavanaugh, a woman whom he bullied in high school. To say that neither of them are thrilled with this situation is a gross understatement. Erin's peculiarities made her an easy target to torment, but in doing so, she was underestimated, something Cavin finds out was a big mistake. The mystery of who is truly pulling the strings and setting Cavin up to fail is a compelling part of this read, and I was surprised at how that resolved.
I love how the chemistry swirls around this couple and their effort to fight against the sizzling connection is very entertaining. All of the expected bloodshed, violence and mayhem of this world is on full display, and it is engaging and addictive! The layers in this storyline kept me flipping pages, and I finished this quicker than I expected. Soo good!
I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next new release from this prolific and creative author. I highly recommend visiting her catalog (once done here) for more unforgettable stories. Worth your time, IMO.
I received an ARC (thank you) and happily leave my review.
This was a dark Irish mafia read and I highly recommend the audio. The arranged marriage trope hooked me, especially since it’s with the guy who bullied her in high school. It’s angsty but also beautiful watching them come together. The MMC is very dominant and she absolutely eats it up. And that ending got me.
Wicked Altar is a masterclass in emotional, dark Irish Mafia romance. As the first installment in The McCarthy Family Legacy series, Jane Henry delivers a story that is as devastating as it is beautiful. The narrative follows Cavin McCarthy and Erin Kavanaugh. Both come from mafia royalty, but their history is stained with pain. Cavin, freshly out of prison, finds himself in an arranged marriage to Erin, the woman he once bullied. While the marriage is a business arrangement for the families, it is a life-saving mission for Erin. Her younger sister is gravely ill, and the only way to get her the medical care she needs is through the McCarthy family's connections. Cavin is a complex, dominant MMC who is dangerously intuitive. He understands Erin’s limits and her sensitivities better than she does. The way he uses restraint and command to earn her surrender is intoxicating. Erin herself is a phenomenal lead. She is innocent but bold, possessing a quiet fearlessness that eventually makes her Cavin’s greatest weakness. The suspense element is top notch. The mystery of who is pulling the strings and sabotaging Cavin kept me turning pages late into the night. The resolution was surprising and deeply satisfying. While I have always loved Seamus and Zoya, Cavin and Erin have a chemistry that is unmatched. This is Jane Henry’s best work yet. Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"I hate that he's so fucking handsome. I hate that he knows it. And I hate that no matter how hard I try, I can't rewrite our past."
This was my first time reading Jane Henry and I am very happy with what I've read!!! Erin and Cavin were adorable and very sexy together!!! Their story had a little of everything in it... Mafia, fighting, enemies to lovers, a forced marriage and they were running out of time... Will they let go the old grudges and be together in this wild adventure???
"My body doesn't seem to care that he's the enemy. Doesn't care that he hurt me. It just remembers his hands. His heat."
Erin's sister is dying and she can't do anything to help her... Cavin has people after him and he has to keep it a secret if he wants for his family to be safe... Their parents are arranging a beneficial marriage for both of the families and Erin with Cavin have to carry the burden... You see, back in highschool, Cavin was bullying Erin and she can't forgive him for that... From his side, Cavin has his own issues with her and now, he needs to marry her and this is the last thing he needs at the moment... What will happen when they will start to learn one another better and realize that it might be something more between them than plain hatred???
"How can I hate the woman and still feel murderous at the thought of her being anyone else's? How can I hate her and still feel like mine is the only name she should ever say?"
I liked both Cavin and Erin... They were both special in their own way... And I liked them together!!! I could understand that the past had traumatized Erin, but Cavin proved her in here that he was much better from the boy before.... These two had managed to built a relationship that it was so beautiful, even though they had too many outside factors that were standing in between...
"You're a monster... But I'm... beginning to see the appeal of the villain."
I liked the McCarthy clan very much and I liked Bridget... I am really looking forward for the next books in the series... I am intigued by every single one of these people!!! Erin and Cavin were amazing and I can't wait for more!!!
"You're looking at me like you want me to ruin you." "Maybe I do."
**I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review**
We were introduced to the McCarthy family in Unrequited when we got Seamus and Zoya’s story. Now we are getting Cavin and Erin’s story and let’s just say these two have quite a lot of history 😅
The McCarthy’s need access to trade routes in which the Kavanagh family. Meanwhile Erin’s sister Bridget is terminally ill and she needs access to a doctor that is close to the McCarthy family. Both families have something that the other wants so it’s logical that an arranged marriage is proposed between Cavin and Erin. But Erin was completely unaware that she firstly has a new fiance and secondly that her new fiance would be the man who made her life hell when they were in school together. She finds out about her impending marriage at a dinner party in which she thought was just two families coming together for a friendly discussion.
Our FMC Erin is neurodivergent and has developed various mechanisms in order to help her. She is a woman who enjoys a puzzle which she uses later in the book to uncover who is trying to destroy the McCarthy family. Cavin notices this very quickly about his wife and he fosters a warm environment by creating a space in their home for Erin where she can retreat if she needs be to knit, read or whatever she would like. This is definitely a moment where Erin’s walls come down a lot as her perception of the Cavin she knew in school is a lot different from the man he his today.
Erin didn’t realise that when she got Cavin in trouble in school it resulted in consequences at home, and this was a reason why the animosity between them started all those years go. Cavin is regretful of his actions all those years ago and he goes to the ends of the earth to apologise and ensure his wife will be happy in their marriage.
I loved seeing these two get to know each other on a deeper level and from this a romance blossomed. Cavin is oh so protective of his wife and I am absolutely here for it👏🏼
I am so excited to see where Jane takes this series next. Thank you to VPR who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭
The next generation of the McCarthy family saga continues. The story will focus mainly on Cavin McCarthy and a union with Erin Kavanagh. These two aren’t strangers by any means, both attending school at St. Albert’s—and that is a huge part of the problem. Cavin maintained his bad boy persona and referred to her as Perfect little Erin. But they aren’t kids anymore, far from it. Erin is twenty-six and has never dated, and Cavin is a couple of years older and in the mafia.
What a shock for Erin to learn that the invitation to dinner with her parents at the McCarthy home isn’t just a social dinner but an arrangement. Erin enters the situation meekly, and it is up to Cavin to break the truth to her—how could her family do this to her? It is decided that the wedding will take place in two months and that the union will aid the McCarthy and Kavanagh families, but what about Erin's wants? Using her sister, Bridget, as leverage is how her mother deals with her.
Cavin: You really don’t care what people think of you, do you? Erin: I care. I just can’t change how my brain works, so I stopped trying. People think I’m rude, or cold, or strange. Maybe I am. But I’m also right most of the time, and I’d rather be right than be liked. You’re not what I expected. Cavin: Aye? How so? Erin: You’re not…You’re not performing. Most people perform. They say what they think you want to hear, or what makes them look good. You don’t do that. Cavin: Neither do you. Erin: No. I don’t. Sort of a pair, then? Maybe that’s why this—might work. Cavin: This being? Erin: The marriage. The arrangement. Whatever this is. I should go. I have work. I’m putting this behind us. I’m—not the girl I was in school anymore, and--you’re not who you were either.
The story is shrouded in secrets, mystery, suspense, life and death danger, good, bad, and evil. Not everyone is as they seem, and even arranged marriages can work. The chemistry is there for Erin and Cavin, once they each get past the fact that they aren’t the kids from school, both have grown up, matured, and have much to offer.
This enemies to lovers dark mafia romance started out with a bang and did not let up with the tension filled dynamics between Cavin and Erin fueled by a shared childhood past where he was her bully, and she still hates him for it. Jane Henry excels at writing unique stories where morally grey men who put family above all else loose their hearts and become obsessed by strong FMCs. I absolutely love it—every time!
Erin’s intelligence and devotion to her younger sister made me instantly feel compassion for her. I love how she says what’s on her mind and pushes back even when her life is being controlled by the men in the ‘family’. Her ability to rile Cavin and push against his dominance makes her a stabby FMC who never needs to hold a knife.
Cavin’s character grows as he begins to understand Erin and the traumatic impacts bullying and her dysfunctional family have had on her. As Cavin deals with his own neurodivergent mind, these two have to work to find love through all the hate. I was emotionally invested in them even when the twists the dangerous mafia world delivered and their own trauma had me anxious to turn the page. Erin and Cavin’s story hit me in the feels, and I love this couple who would rather be alone then be over-peopled—a trait I can relate to at times!😂

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Thank you to Valentine PR and Jane Henry for the early copy. As always, these are my own honest thoughts and opinions.
love this! it hooked me in from the start an then i couldn’t put it down! we get an HEA for Cavin and Erin but it seems like there will be an overarching storyline that continues throughout the series. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Cavin and Erin grew up together, both from mafia families but Erin never really felt like she fit in. Cavin didn’t have a choice but to fit in and part of that was bullying Erin in school.. something inconsequential to him but set the tone for Erin moving forward.
Fast forward, Erin’s younger sister is extremely sick and her only chance of survival is experimental treatments from an unbribable doctor with a two year wait list. This doctor happens to be friends with Cavin’s family and so Erin’s parents arrange a marriage between the two of them without telling Erin.
She would do anything for her sister but in this case, marriage to her enemy might not be the worst thing…turns out Cavin isn’t the same boy she went to school with anymore and he would do anything to make her happy
-arranged marriage -bad boy x good girl -anti hero -band of brothers -childhood bully -virgin FMC -he falls first -irish mafia -enemies to lovers -boy obsessed -neurodivergent FMC
Awesome!! High danger! I loved it! We are back in Balleyhock again! Yay! This story is about Cavin McCarthy & Erin. They are so steamy!! This has everything. Danger and Desire, eagerness & Electric, complex & compelling characters abound! . Love and family is always the answer in this Irish Mafia next Generation of the McCarthy family! This HEA was very hard earned. It’s very exciting reading!!
Let me just see if I have this straight. Our mmc is being forced into an arranged marriage with an fmc who is CLEARLY autistic or has some other form of severe social anxiety or neurodivergence. He knows she is “odd”, notes that she has certain tics and stims, knows he bullied the shit out of her in high school and she’s traumatized by him, and still he - checks notes - slams her into a wall for tossing his jacket at him, spanks her, and tells her “you will learn to respect your husband.”
My ladies in feminism, it is 2026 and I have too much rage for this shit. I don’t care that he turns into a sappy fool later on, the answer is NO.
And aside from all that, the writing is just 💀. Why do we need the same information repeated to us on every page?? Why are the paragraphs so short?? Why is there so much space between paragraphs?? It’s like when I tried to fuck with the page margins in college to meet the page count requirement of my assignments. Not all books need to be published, y’all.
I’ll start off by saying I’ve never read anything from this author and I won’t read anything again. The duplicative nature of this book is astounding. So many things left unanswered. It’s like the authors writing teacher said “for homework, you have 4 days to write a 500 page book.” and the author just drank 47 Red Bulls on the 11th hour of the deadline and whipped out this book.
Wicked Altar is my first book by Jane Henry and the first book in The McCarthy Family Legacy. I love a good mafia romance and mixed it with an arranged marriage and I'm 100% game. With two very opposite MCs, this story brings you in from the start where our bad boy hero, Cavin comes to the rescue of Erin at funeral. But these two have history going back a ways and Erin wants nothing to do with someone that made her high school years a living hell. But when Erin Kavanagh is forced to marry Cavin McCarthy, she will do anything to save her sister. Even marry her enemy.
This Irish mafia romance started off with a literal bang and then introduced us to the arranged marriage to benefit two families. Both Erin and Cavin have reasons while they don't like the other, but Erin is the one that holds out longest, and for good reason. I liked that Henry was able to show us who the characters were in the present and who they were in the past to make us understand their dislike of one another. Cavin is the epitome of the bad boy. From his past and the way he treated Erin to the present with his fighting and even prison time. The man drips bad boy sex appeal, but he is attracted to the one person he never thought he would be. Erin, meanwhile has this innocence about her that may stem from her being neurodivergent. But that doesn't make her weak. She has this unexpected strength when it comes to what she loves and believes in, especially her sister and soon Cavin. They may start off by hating the idea of the marriage, but it quickly evolves into more and these two grow quite protective of one another from the moment they start to realize that they have real feelings for each other.
With the plot surrounding an arranged marriage to grow power for the McCarthys, I was consumed with the growth between Erin and Cavin's relationship and how soon they fell for one another. I liked seeing Cavin be soft for Erin and giving her a safe space when she was overwhelmed. That in turned allowed her a strength she wasn't ever allowed to have under her parents' roof. Those moments stood out the most and made me fall for these two. But then I had to wonder if there was more to the whole plot than the arranged marriage, because that aspect cleared up pretty quickly. With the added fighting scenes and the matter of "paying the tribute", you could tell there was more at play to this mafia story. But that aspect seemed more of an afterthought. I wanted that conflict to be more concise and flow with the rest of the story more cohesively. I wish there was more backstory concerning that aspect, as well as the McCarthy family. But overall, it was still an enjoyable read with two MCs that are easy to fall for. Wicked Altar is a solid start to a new mafia series that left parts open-ended to potential stories to come.
If you like: Mafia Romance Arranged Marriage Opposites Attract Band of Brothers Neurodivergent FMC Underground fighter MMC that is a cinnamon role for his woman, then this story is worth checking out.
Jane Henry never fails to deliver a fantastic mafia romance story.
Wicked Altar is the start of her newest mafia romance series, the McCarthy Family Legacy. We got a glimpse of them from her previous series (Bravata Kings), and we dive right into Cavin and Erin's
The blurb gives you all need to go into this story.
Cavin and Erin group up going to the same school together, but they were not friendly. Erin is neurodivergent. Cavin wasn't exactly kind to her either.
As the blurb states their respected families have a mutual benefit of their arranged marriage. Neither want it but neither can deny the pull they feel towards one another, as much as they fight it.
Jane does a fabulous job with the character development in this book. I loved seeing Cavin grow as the story progressed. He found himself appreciating Erin in new ways and that allowed him to grow in other ways. Neurodivergence isn't an obvious disorder in people and I love how Jane portrayed Erin perfectly and her mannerisms. Erin may have seemed naive in school, but now as an adult, she is fierce and Cavin quickly realizes that he has match his match.
The plot of this story was very engaging and the twists at every corner had me turning the pages. I loved that Jane flawlessly blended the romance aspects of this story with the overall plot and made it all come together perfectly.
“I see the way people part for him, .. I like being with the scary one..”
BEST DUE as always on Jane Henry!! I can not get enough.. I love it sooo much and would listen to them forever. Stories are TOP NOTCH. The McCarthy Family is Dynamic, and never disssapoints. This was a cherry on an already wonderfully delisious cake.
Erin and Cavin has a history.. not the nice kind.. its now in both their faces and they can not go around it.. they need to deal with it.. Bridgette brings in a whole different set of emotions to unpack. The drama and intruge is next level and kept me on my toes the whole way trough. When we learn what really happened… Hold on to your hats..
“I promise to see you and be your person” can I just swoon here for a moment???
Its a gripping Mafia Read and the love and chemistry in sizzelinnnng..
Enemies to Lovers done very right. Arrange Marriage at its best. Irish Mafia!!! “Hot” with fists flying and a F.Lead slightly on the spectrum you get a very interesting match.
ps: If you can also get your hands on the audio you will be most happy. Read-a-long while listening is just the best. The narrators on Jane Henry’s Books know their bizz!!
Book Trope: Arranged marriage. Enemies to lovers. Dark Irish Mafia Romance. Bully. Neurodivergent Hero/Heroine. Dual First Person POV
Cavin McCarthy always thought Erin was a stuck up snobby girl in school. She would always tattle to the teachers / principal who was the main ring leader getting him in trouble at school and at home. Cain just spent the past 6 months in jail / prison, and he knows he doesn't want to ever go back, he wants to get on the straight and narrow, but, isn't sure how. He needs to change his ways from 'fighting' to 'talking' and resolving things through talking instead of fighting. Now that they are both grown, Cavin is seeing her in a different light. He sees how special she is. Cavin knows she has 'ticks' and knows certains things set her into stress mode. Both Cavin and Erin are from Mafia families. Now both families need each other and have proposed Cavin and Erin get married so the families will join. Erin's family has the water rights for the wharfs and can move shipping items without much of a hassle. Cavin's family is more muscle and has more 'pull' with some of the other families that Erin's dad wants connections with.
Erin Kavanaugh is neurodivergent and has developed various mechanisms in order to help her, such as counting, and tapping her fingers in a pattern to calm her. During her childhood she suffered cruelty at the secondary school by most of the school children including Cavin, who was the leader of her cruelty. Erin's sister, Bridget is very sick with aplastic anemia - a rare condition where your body can’t make blood cells properly. The bleeding and bruising is actually getting worse and Erin knows she isn’t getting any better. The Dr's have given Bridget about 6 - 8 months left to live. Erin's family knows that the McCarthy family has ties to a Dr Rosenberg, who specializes in hematological conditions, what Bridget is suffering from.
Will Erin and Cavin be able to create a marriage and a life together based on truth and happiness? Will Erin be able to forgive Cavin for all the cruelty he pushed on her when they were younger? Will Cavin be able to forgive Erin for always 'tattling' on him and getting him in trouble?
I did receive a free ARC copy of this book.Thank you to VPR who provided this e-arc. I am freely leaving a honest book review.
⭐️I received an ALC for my review! My opinions are my own!⭐️
First off, this is the first mafia romance that I fell head over heels in love with! It had EVERYTHING! Enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity/marriage, touch her/him and die, slow burn, and if it were supernatural, i would swear they were fated mates! The chemistry between our fmc and mmc was there from the beginning, but they fought it tooth and nail. I loved the story and everything about this set my soul on fire. I felt every single emotion poured into this and there were A LOT. The writing was impeccable, the story flowed freely and the character development was top notch. The relationship bloomed organically and even though it was through force, it didn't feel forced. Nothing was rushed and it left ypu wanting for nothing, but more of these amazing characters. I truly hope there will be another installment in this because it breaks my heart to think I wont get to experience these characters again! I loved every single second of this book!
Plot: 4/5 - Spice: 3/5 ————> Cavin and Erin have known each other since childhood. They went to the same school. Cavin was a grade A bully, and Erin was a tattletale, always ratting Cavin out. They never got along. They both hated each other.
Hating each other makes for a good arraigned marriage. His family needs something, and her family needs a miracle. Together they’re forced to marry. Forced to spend time together, attraction aside, they go from cold to hot.
You have to wait until you’re about halfway through the book before Cavin and Erin finally come together. But when they do, it’s perfect. They’re both supportive of each other. No more lies. They break down their barriers. They both can be themselves. They work together to solve Cavins troubles, and Cavin comes through with the miracle doctor for Erin.
A wonderful standalone WITH NO SURPRISE PREGNANCY! (I swear all mafia romances wind up with one, so I was ecstatic that this one didn’t) A solid HEA. This was a fun, dark, irish mafia romance.
I absolutely adored this book! The way in which Cavin redeemed himself from his past had my heart in a vice grip. You can’t help but appreciate Erin’s stubborn and strong personality. These two were perfect for each other.
Cavin’s commitment to showing Erin that he’s apologetic for everything was *chef’s kiss*. This man stops at nothing to protect Erin from his world and worshipped the hell out of her. He’s controlling, powerful, and full of love for his woman. Even when everything around him was falling apart, they both leaned on each other for comfort and safety.
Erin is such a strong and fiesty character. She fights her feelings and makes Cavin grovel as he should. I loved how she asserted her power when it came to her man and never let him control her. She takes in the bloodshed, the betrayal, and the overwhelming passion between her and Cavin with strength. I loved watching their relationship grow to the point where they couldn’t live without each other.
This story pulled me in from the start with its intense enemies-to-lovers dynamic and layered characters. Erin and Cavin's arranged marriage, born from mafia family duty, is anything but romantic, yet their chemistry is undeniable. I loved watching Erin, a neurodivergent heroine, navigate trauma and anxiety with strength and intelligence. Cavin, once her childhood bully, transforms into a fiercely protective partner who falls first and hard. Their slow-burn connection felt raw and earned, filled with tension, emotional growth, and unexpected tenderness. The story balances high-stakes danger, family loyalty, and unresolved wounds with a touch of spice and suspense. I appreciated that love didn't magically fix everything; they had to work for it. If you're into dark mafia romance with heart and grit, this one's worth it.
I’m not usually a mafia romance fan. The OTT MMCs can feel cartoonish and the FMCs often fade into the background, especially in arranged marriages.
So I was surprised how quickly I got invested in Cavin and Erin. It starts with bully romance vibes but shifts fast, maybe a little too fast, since Erin forgives him pretty quickly. But they communicate! Watching them actually sit down and talk through their issues was so refreshing.
I loved the realistic neurodivergent rep. Her stims weren’t treated as “quirky,” just human. And Cavin learning how to support her, especially when she’s overstimulated, was genuinely sweet.
A few minor plot issues toward the end, but overall? I really enjoyed this one.
Thank you Valentine PR for the eARC, I’ll keep an eye out for the rest of the series.
The spice in this book was so much tamer than I thought it was gonna be based on Cavin’s fantasies in the beginning and the shift from hate to love between him and Erin also happened a lot faster than I was expecting.
I was kinda scared that there was gonna be a bunch of owd and jealousy because of the whole s*x club thing but there was surprisingly non of that. This was a very safe romance with both Cavin and Erin being very much devoted to each other after the marriage was arranged, even before they got past the bad blood between them. Overall this was a very sweet romance and I loved the way Cavin & Erin became each other’s safe spaces.
I didn’t really care much about the plot outside the romance though and I really couldn’t keep track of who was who when it came to all Cavin’s relatives… I also feel like the ending got wrapped up incredibly fast.
I love Jane Henry's stories. She always writes characters that I can relate to, even if they are in unrelatable circumstances. But, I adore her writing style. I feel like I could keep reading her books forever because her style is so fluid and effortless to digest. I'm not saying it's simple, but it flows so beautifully. Wicked Altar is no different.
Cavin was part of a group of boys that tormented Erin through school. Now, they are being forced into marriage, but they are not the same people they were back then. They've both done some things, and thought the other had done some things, that they will need to work through together.
I'm not the biggest bully romance fan but I am a huge Jane Henry fan, so I stuck with this one. The bullying in this story happened in the past, but is told through the characters' memories. Things aren't always exactly as they seem, and there is always something happening in the background or another viewpoint, which I thought helped digest the bullying. Neurodivergence representation is my favorite new microtrope. Jane did a great job of writing Erin through her own eyes and those of others - for better or worse. The way Cavin steps up was so lovely, and I adored Erin all the way through. I could read a second whole book with Cavin and Erin and love it just as much.
